I have to give my blogger-in-crime, Dan, credit for coming up with this headline when I told him what I was doing this weekend. Heh.
PatriotPartner and I headed up to the King of Blue States — Massachusetts — for a wedding of an old high school friend. And in a sense, we were at the spiritual center of Blue-ness… a commune/dance therapy place called “Earthdance.” It was odd that the two gay Republicans were — at the same time — very uncomfortable, yet the most mainstream, amongst these idealistic forest nymphs.
John and I did NOT stay at Earthdance, but rather at one of the nicest bed & breakfasts I have ever been to — The Mountain View B&B. The owners are an awesome lesbian couple with the cutest son. We had a blast with them and I’d encourage anyone visiting Western Massachusetts to stay with them!
But back to the wedding… my high school friend has, in recent years, immersed herself in “women’s studies” and is, to the best of all of our knowledge, a real witch. A good witch, PatriotMom always tries to remind me. Which frankly is too bad… I could use a bad witch from time to time.
So the guy covered in green ribbons at the top of the posting was called “The Horned One” or “Lord of the Forest.” Here he was at the front of the gathering bringing his spirit into the ceremony. He raised his horns….and everyone was supposed to say “Hail and Welcome.” (We did not as we were afraid God would strike us dead for violating the First Commandment.)
As you would expect, the spirit of fire had to be part of the occasion…
So the ceremony goes on… with all of the elements of “Mother Earth” trickling in and out and with me wondering where the closest tub of Holy Water might be where I could bathe myself once it was all over. There was much talk of love, peace, elements of union, etc. But it all seemed like a summer stock play to me. Hey, whatever floats people’s boats and makes them happy. Just not sure they are all living in the same world I am.
Oh, this fiesty liberal grandmother spoke of the good old days of marching for peace and “cleaning up America”….in 1986. PatriotPartner and I still can’t figure out what was so hippie-centric in 1986 unless she was involved in “Hands Across America” or something. Oh yeah, of course she was wearing the expected “No Vigilante Justice War In Iraq” pin.
As the ceremony ended and the two were joined to each other… we all clapped and stood up and left the woodsy meadow. And it was then I spotted the most supremely ironic photo op of the day. For all of the love and adoration expressed for Mother Earth and all of her elements….. this is how the liberals seated behind us actually treated their environment…
For the record, John and I disposed of our trash properly and promptly.
