Bloggers Unite to Help Katrina Victims

A number of bloggers across the USA (and perhaps the world) are uniting today to encourage donations to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. I would like to join in that effort and keep this posting at the top of the site all day today.

First, here is an excellent compliation of possible charities that bloggers have found via Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit.

A couple of highlights… I know that Sean Hannity & Clear Channel Communications have set up “StormAid.com

I am going to make a donation later this morning to the Episcopal Relief and Development charity.

I have also donated frequent flier miles, through United Airlines, to the effort. “United We Stand For Hurricane Katrina Relief” (I might add that this is one of the few times where I have something nice to say about United this summer!)

Finally, I made contact with David, a good friend who used to live in DC but had moved to New Orleans. David is okay and with his family west of Baton Rouge. But I offered to open my house to him if he had no place to stay…. I don’t have a huge home, but can certainly open my house to someone that needs a place to stay… even though I’m many miles away.

With that in mind, I would encourage all of my readers (especially those closer to the disaster area) who are able to host victims in their home to register with “Homes for Katrina Victims.”

  1. For what it’s worth, I signed my blog up for Blog Relief Day. My charity is Humane Society of the United States, which is taking care of the cats, dogs, and other critters abandoned to the storm. I imagine my church will be doing something this Sunday, but if not, I’ll plan on donating to additional charities.

I was supposed to present a paper at a conference in NO in October. No official word yet, but I can’t imagine the conference will go forward. My airline ticket was company-paid, so no big, but I also bought a non-refundable ticket for my son that will now be unusable. Too bad there’s no way for the airlines to donate the revenue from cancelled tickets into a relief fund or something.

  2. For once, I actually am happy to read something V the K wrote! I felt kind of guilty contributing to the Humane Society with so many people in need, but I did anyway. I know if I had evacuated and left my pets there, I’d want someone trying to save them. I think that’s great you chose that organization.

  3. Well, that and the fact that animals don’t loot children’s hospitals or shoot at the people who are trying to help them.

  4. Good point. Normally I’d cut some slack on the looting thing. But these people aren’t stealing food and clothing. They are stealing TVs and money and stuff that is completely useless in a disaster like this. My company has a few offices down there where people were staying (above water) and they have said the crime is out of control. They tried to walk somewhere and were getting accosted by looters so they went back. And evidently the situation at the Superdome is out of control. What a nightmare, honestly. I just have to remember that the majority of the people suffering through this are probably not bad people and the looters are just the bad apples.

  7. Comrades,
I gave to Catholic Charities. Now, I renounced Catholicism years ago, but I was also the recipient of their assistance sometime back during another natural disaster. It’s my way of repaying the favour, and hopefully, it will help someone else. I also figure that a large posrtion of New Orleans is Catholic anyway, and they probably know well enough where the money needs to go.
Having said all that, I wish I could lend a hand down there. I am between jobs, but still, I’d volunteer for free if there was something constructive to do. Still, it’s probably best to hold off on all of that till things settle down a might. No sense in adding another body to the area until some order is restored.
    Respects,

  8. I plan to give to both RainbowFund.org and the American Red Cross as much as I’d prefer not to give to them. Since the gays are already hearing from Fred Phelps’ crew that it is their fault this happened, it would be nice to show some solidarity in the gay community to send some money down to help with the relief efforts.

  9. I’m glad people are giving. I intend to. I’m even glad to see this has even brought Britton and V to a point of agreement.

Wonder, though, why giving to a cause as obvious and human as this needs to say something. Can this be the one thing that doesn’t have a political undertone to it?
