GP Readers Offers Place to Stay

September 2, 2005 by GayPatriot

If anyone knows of a gay male, or gay male couple, from New Orleans who are in need of a place to stay, please have them email Shawn & Brian at watermark@midmaine.com.

They live in Bar Harbor, Maine and have offered a room to someone in need.

There generous is commendable, no arguing with that. But why just gay evacuees?

    That is a kind gesture.

I don’t see any problem with wanting to help people who have something major in common. Displaced people are probably best helped by people with similar values and experiences. That way, the person providing the help is better able to empathize and understand what the person needs. This was a point Hugh Hewitt has been making a lot lately, and I tend to agree with it. I hope we are all willing to help people no matter how dissimilar they are from ourselves, but when possible, we can probably most effectively help people similar to ourselves.

I’m straight and agree with #3. It’s too sensible to be objectionable.

Emphasizing here: Taking a stranger into your home is one of the highest acts of spirit there is.

Much less emphasis here: On the other hand, can’t entirely agree with #3. Just as example, when we first moved here, our next door neighbors were a lesbian couple. And they were the bitchiest, nastiest, most thoroughly unpleasant people I’ve ever been stuck next door to. A few months ago, they sold and moved on. The people who live there now are a minister, his wife, and three small children. And they could not be cooler.

Incidentally, for anyone reading, I can offer a room for the month of September for a gay single or couple in exchange for some dogsitting duties; I can probably also help with employment.

#3 offers an important insight into human charity.

OMG, You people would allow a homosexual to be in your home, alone with your children????

    Sick.

Interesting note here, by the way…I put an ad out on craigslist offering my place (also to a gay man or lesbian, I agree w/ #3).
I went to a friend’s house for dinner and a movie, got back about 4 hours later and couldn’t find my post. I thought something was wrong and it might have been deleted or something until I realized…it’d been buried back about 4 or 5 pages (each page only shows 100 posts).
…So, in the course of about 4 hours, about 500 people had offered their homes up to complete strangers.
Kinda makes me feel good about America.
By the way, if anybody knows any family who needs a place to stay, Bruce knows how to get in touch with me.
