Which Is Worse? Avian Flu or the American “Gay Disease”

October 11, 2005 by Bruce Carroll

From the annals of Another Gay Republican comes this look at being gay in Arab countries.

Arab Gays – AGR

)From AP article) “But more Arabs are coming out as gays, or at least coming to terms with their sexuality, even though in some countries they face laws that can land them in jail and extremists who beat them up because Islam condemns homosexuality.

On top of that, homosexuality is widely seen as a disease spread by the U.S. and Israel to corrupt Arabs and undermine their religious faith.”

AGR wonders if we as gay Americans can be recognized for our contribution.

Who knew we were helping spread American imperialism and Israeli oppression? Do we get paid for that?

I was watching an MST3K not long ago, I think it was “Angels Revenge,” set in the 1970’s, and Mike and the Bots made a reference to “swine flu.” It made me wonder if ‘Avian Flu’ wasn’t the new ‘Swine Flu.” In fact, with an energy crisis, inflation heating up, and Iran causing trouble, it’s looking more and more like 70’s all over again.

Monty, in our home we’ve blocked CNN and CNN Headlines channels because of their objectionable content and low quality –the same reason we don’t watch journalists of the NeoLeft like Jerry Springer, Katie Couric, Anderson Cooper, and Jon Stewart.

Frankly, I’d rather spend the time doing the pots and pans.

Bruce, When has HRC ever issued anti-Israeli talking points? (I would ask the same of NGLTF…but I wouldn’t put it past them). There are plenty of liberals who are staunch supporters of Israel. Hmm…Barney Frank comes to mind.

You’re writing would be better enhanced by arguments, and not just petty name calling.

Israel’s biggest mistake was starting creating settlements in the Occupied/Disputed Territories, particularly in the West Bank starting after the 1967 war. They will survive that debacle, but it isn’t going to be easy for them. Israel has been cheer-leadered in that operations over the last few years by some nutty American fundamentalist christians.

    From the article:

“A VISION of an Islamic society that bans mixed dancing and sternly disapproves of homosexuality has been given by Mahmoud Zahar, the most senior leader of Hamas in Gaza. “

(bans mixed dancing? So, the men dance with…. men? Or goats? I’m confused. Oh, and btw, “sternly disapproves…” actually means “we’re gonna kill you!”)

“After controversies when a Hamas-led council halted a dance festival and Islamist gunmen stopped a rap band performing in Gaza, Dr Zahar defended the enforcement of a strict interpretation of Islam.”

I would agree that banning “rap bands” might actually be a good thing for any society (including that whole “white rapper-skate board chic” look) but a dance festival? Apparently, Dr. Zahar has never been to a good old-fashioned “ho-down” or a tripped the light fantastic listening to a lovely waltz. These people are just no fun!

With this kind of attitude, don’t hold your breath waiting for the Pride parade in Gaza.

However, you cannot deny that a significant part of the gay community has HISTORICALLY marched with Palestinian causes that want to march the Jews into the ocean.

I’m not part of the left, so I won’t speak for them. But, perhaps some gay conservatives need to terms with the FACT that many Republicans, including President Bush, want to jail gays. Or, at least unti “activist judges” on the Supreme Court ruled that illeagal.

I do wish you’d go to talking points meetings, Gregg…..it’s that Republicans and President Bush want to put gays in concentration camps.

The Texas sodomy law made it a class C misdemeanor, Gregg. Under Texas law, Class C misdemeanors are punishable by a fine not to exceed $500 — unless one has been previously convicted of at least three violations of disorderly conduct or public intoxication laws, in which case the penalty can be enhanced to jail time. Given that Lawrence and Garner had assault, murder-by-automobile, drug possession, and other convictions between them, they more than qualified.

In short, you couldn’t be jailed unless you were already a convicted repeat offender. Moreover, had some bitter queen not lied and told the police their apartment was being broken into, even Garner and Lawrence probably wouldn’t have been, either.

    NoDick,
If the laws were written like the ones in Nevada then the real crime was in the ancillary laws and the plea bargains. Laws that prohibited serving a known homosexual clientele in a bar, the right to deny business licenses, the right to having to register as a sexual deviant, the prohibition of known homosexuals to congregate in public and on and on.

Oh the shame, oh the stigma.

    Thank God for ACTIVIST JUDGES.

  19. North Dallas Thirty says

    October 14, 2005 at 1:08 am - October 14, 2005

Impossible, Chandler. Harry Reid supported all of those, and he’s a Democrat. Therefore, those laws are not stigmas; they’re gay-positive and pro-gay.

Ah, the best thing that could be said of this is that homosex would be subject to a tax not exceeding US$ 500 per episode. Whereas heterosex is free.

At some point, these distinctions get to be rediculous.

    NoDick,

Harry was never elected to a state post. He did support the revocation of the sodomy laws, which was actually brought about by a handsome Rebublican state senator in actual, God forgive me, bi-partisan action in the early 90’s.

And those laws WERE not ARE.

    Thank God for activist legislatures!

    Sounds like California.

  23. North Dallas Thirty says

    October 14, 2005 at 3:38 pm - October 14, 2005

Impossible, Chandler. Republican actions are ALWAYS antigay, as you yourself have said. You should demand that Harry and his fellow Democrats restore those sodomy laws that that evil Republican took away.

Actually, not that wasn’t your point.

    Homosex: taxed. Heterosex: not taxed.

That is kinda/sorta stupid. Why should homosex be taxed when heterosex is not?

  25. North Dallas Thirty says

    October 14, 2005 at 6:28 pm - October 14, 2005

Because the voters of Texas decided that it should be, which is their right to do. You might as well argue that it’s unfair to tax smokers and drinkers.

Do I agree with their logic? No. But we didn’t do a good enough job of convincing enough people that the law was archaic and needed to be removed.

    NoDick,

If you read my post, actually read my post, you would see that there are some valuable republicans. And while I may categorically lump all republicans together for a grand smiting, there are actually socially moderate republicans. Thay may not be at the national level but they do exist.

Your greatest problem is that you paint things black and white in a much more nuanced existance. For people that think simply, it is a simpler framework.

And it was a joint effort, one that both sides may take credit for.
But you know that. You are just being an unfun pain in the ass.

What I find so remarkable is that you insist that we Libs have an All gay/Or noting aliance when you and your ilk are a hated minority in your own party? You settle for the Stay in the closet and don’t mention it/or go away option. Gay Libs win frewuently, but you embrace a lose/lose policy.

I hated when Clinton caved on DOMA. I hate when ANY political uses us as a political wedge. Does it mean that I support hateful Republicans that have an anti gay agenda to the occasional Democrat that panders to their own home base? F* U* C* K* no! The instance may be anti gay but the ALTERNATIVE IS WORSE.

Again, it’s called politics. You however just cannot admit you are on the team that created FMA, and created DOMA.

You choose to be a minority in a party that would rather you just went away.

What will it take, Chandler, for you to reach the higher level of self-esteem that gay conservatives have that allow us to call both sides antigay bigots accordingly?

Trust us — despite what Democrats have told you your entire life, you don’t have to accept them or be an outcast. Other people will like you regardless of your political views.
