I wonder what the reaction would be by conservatives if somehow Mr. Fitzgerald came across a Linda Tripp-like “informant” who led them to a woman in the white house who was involved in a personal relationship with president Bush and he was less than forthcoming with truth about that. You can bet there would be screams to high heaven denouncing the special counsel (and probably forgiveness for Mr. Bush for yet another “youthful indiscretion”).

Well, we know what the reaction from Democrats like you is, Kevin, which is to say that committing perjury, tampering with witnesses, and flat-out lying to the American people is OK when it's a Democrat. Your defense that "well, conservatives would do it too if it happened" is an interesting attempt to use speculation to deflect your inability to admit that what Clinton did was wrong.

This is what's fun about pinning down liberal bots like you, Kevin:

-- You're against bosses using their position to get sex -- unless it's Bill Clinton

-- You're against lying under oath or corrupting witnesses -- unless it's Bill Clinton

-- You're in favor of whistleblowers who uncover abuses of power -- unless they're reporting them done by Bill Clinton

Shall I go on?

"He had an ex-wife give..."
And if a Republican were in office, he would have done similar things and gotten the same results.

"the UN Oil-for-Food scandal. You know, the one Bush ended..."
Your admiration for Bush as a foe of war-profiteering is premature.

"Too many conflicting connections here. My head will explode."
Only if you see all this as a battle between Republicans and Democrats.

According to Pinkerton, Rich bought his Clinton pardon more directly than that, anon.

He had an ex-wife give $1 million to various Clinton causes, including 75K to Hillary's election committee and $450K to Clinton library. With good timing.

But I'm sure your stuff is true too.

Libby was one of Rich's lawyers for 2 decades.

In recent news - Just last week - Rich's hands were all over the UN Oil-for-Food scandal. You know, the one Bush ended, by ending Saddam's run in power?

Too many conflicting connections here. My head will explode.

The Marc Rich connection is important. Marc Rich is not "connected" to the Clintons any more or any less than he is "connected" to the Bushes.

Leading Rabbi: Rich Pardon Was Bought
NewsMax.com Wires
Friday, Feb. 16, 2001

NEW YORK (UPI) - The head of the largest Jewish denomination in the United States on Thursday criticized Jewish leaders who lobbied in favor of a pardon for Marc Rich, calling it a "moral stain" for Jews.

"Charged with massive tax evasion and breaking an embargo on trading with Iran, Rich is a multimillionaire fugitive from justice who lives in luxury in Switzerland," Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of Reform Judaism's Union of American Hebrew Congregations, wrote in an op-ed piece in Jewish Week.

"I am in no position to judge Rich's legal claims, but neither are the many Jewish leaders and luminaries who contacted President Clinton in support of the pardon.

"Why their interest in a man who appears to have traded illegally not only with Iran but with Iraq and Libya, rogue states devoted to Israel's destruction? The answer is simple: They were bought," added Yoffie.

"Rich contributed generously to Jewish causes and charities around the world, and then, in a carefully orchestrated campaign, called in favors to put pressure on the president."

A last-minute presidential pardon was given by Bill Clinton on the day he left office last month to Rich, who fled the country in the 1980s before he was charged with 51 counts of tax evasion and fraud.

"President Clinton was a good friend of the Jews, but many of his last-minute pardons were simply outrageous," Yoffie said. "Among the most indefensible were those granted to Jews, but scarcely a voice of Jewish protest has been heard."

In a terse statement released Thursday, U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White in Manhattan, who was appointed by Clinton in 1993, said her office and the FBI "have opened an investigation to determine whether there have been any violations of federal law" in the pardons of Rich and his partner, Pincus Green.

Clinton Denies Wrongdoing

Clinton denied any wrongdoing in a statement issued through his transition office spokeswoman, Julia Payne, late Wednesday.

"As I have said repeatedly, I made the decision to pardon Marc Rich based on what I thought was the right thing to do," Clinton said. "Any suggestion that improper factors, including fund-raising for the party or my library, had anything to do with the decision are absolutely false. I look forward to cooperating with any appropriate inquiry."

According to press reports, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak called Clinton twice, Jerusalem's Mayor Ehud Olmert wrote the president, and dozens of Jewish and Israeli philanthropists added their support to the Rich pardon.

Rich donated about $200 million to causes in Israel in the last 15 years, a source told United Press International.

Rabbi Irving Greenberg, chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Council, the governing board of the Holocaust Museum in Washington, made a serious error when he sent a letter to Clinton on council stationery, according to Yoffie.

"Rabbi Greenberg is giving no interviews," museum spokesman, Arthur Berger, told UPI. "But on Jan. 31, he went to the governing council and took full responsibility for writing the letter on council stationery, and apologized to the council."

This is weird and, in a way, huge:

http://www.newsday.com/news/opinion/ny-oppin314492131oct31,0,6093866,print.column?coll=ny-viewpoints-headlines

Gist is that Libby is heavily connected to fugitive financier Marc Rich, and, through Rich, to the Clintons!!

The Dems had better tread carefully, NOT OVERPLAYING THEIR HAND.

On the other hand, maybe Libby really is kind of a bad guy - in some way no one here knows?

if somehow Mr. Fitzgerald came across a Linda Tripp-like “informant” who led them to a woman in the white house who was involved in a personal relationship with president Bush and he was less than forthcoming with truth about that

You left out the part where Bush would have to lie about it under oath, and suborn perjury from others in the White House about it... before it comes close to what Clinton was charged with.

Republicans crossed a line in bringing the president’s personal life into the public arena (knowing full well they would use it in the 2000 election)

Um, Clinton wasn't eligible to run in 2000.

Once you start lowering the bar for others, you also lower the bar for yourself, so watch what you wish for.

So, Democrats shouldn't bitch about "permissible legal tactics" used to block their nominees after they lowered the bar with their scorched Earth smear campaigns on Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.

60: Gimmee a break. You can over-analyze and re-analyze Clinton as much as you want, but the comparisons will never wash. I wonder what the reaction would be by conservatives if somehow Mr. Fitzgerald came across a Linda Tripp-like "informant" who led them to a woman in the white house who was involved in a personal relationship with president Bush and he was less than forthcoming with truth about that. You can bet there would be screams to high heaven denouncing the special counsel (and probably forgiveness for Mr. Bush for yet another "youthful indiscretion").

Republicans crossed a line in bringing the president's personal life into the public arena (knowing full well they would use it in the 2000 election) and it will probably come back to bite them one day. This is much in the way Orin Hatch stopped Clinton judicial nominees from even being considered in committee so they couldn't be voted on by the senate. Republicans now shake their fists and harumph til they turn blue when Democrats use completely permissable and legal tactics to stop nominees from receiving a vote. Once you start lowering the bar for others, you also lower the bar for yourself, so watch what you wish for.

Libby is accused of lying and obstructing in a NATIONAL SECURITY CRIME – the outing of a CIA agent (and despite what many of you have written here, she WAS undercover and Mr. Fitzgerald yesterday put the lie to ALL of your claims otherwise – so go suck on that).

Really? Please point out where, thank you.

19: So does your response mean that every elected official should be openly asked about his/her marital fidelity while in office and we should base their truth/lying capabilities on that answer compared to the actual truth? I’m not saying that it was OK for Clinton to lie…I’m saying that he was asked questions, under oath, which ultimately had nothing to do with the investigations at hand and were merely contrived to get something on him. Let’s not forget that a lot this was orchestrated by Linda Tripp who not only manipulated Monica Lewinsky, but then brought that knowledge to Starr as if Clinton’s blowjobs and his cum on Monica’s dress amounted to some sort of national crisis.

So in other words, it was OK for him to lie.

Why couldn't he tell the truth, Kevin? Because he would be publicly embarrassed.

Why would he be publicly embarrassed? Because what he did was wrong.

So to cover up the fact, he lied under oath to a grand jury and attempted to corrupt witnesses to the fact.

Now your comment about "fascism" becomes obvious......that's what you consider being held accountable for your actions. Holding a President accountable for spitting on the Constitution by lying because he doesn't want to be publicly embarrassed for doing something he knew was wrong was "fascism".

The Manuchurian Candidate...... Wasn't that one where Eleanor Shaw (Angela Lansbury) was the most vociferous of conservatives, but was in truth a power hungry (gulp) communist bent on taking over the US government?

"and on a wave of hysteria, they'll sweep us into the White House with powers that will make martial law look like anarchy" - sorry, couldn't resist; her whole performance in that sequence is one of the most chilling performances ever given on screen.

Let's not forget that it was many a fascist regime that began with the promise to restore law and order to a nation.

It's really funny to see leftists throwing around terms like "treason" and "patriotism". I think they've watched "The Manchurian Candidate" one time too many.

I hope you hold your party to the same standards as you held Clinton.

When you assume, you make an ASS out of U and ME.

Another Independant here, in case you're a little slow, er, slower than usual.

I voted Republican in 2004 because they sucked less than the Democrats. I thought the Republicans and Democrats sucked equally in the previous two elections, so I voted for Browne and Nader.

What I love most about today's liberals is the way they are always over-playing their hands.

What happens to people who constantly over-play their hands? They lose credibility. Then they lose elections.

Dan Rather and Mary Mapes (of the CBS forgeries) way over-played their hands. Bush's TANG service was fine (or even admirable). What little they had against it, they blew, by mega-exaggerations.

The Left way over-played its hand on Katrina. "10,000 dead!!" and the end of the Bush administration, due to a "failed" Federal response? Don't make us laugh.

Now, the Left is way over-playing its hand on Delay. And on Plamegate.

Clearly, no one violated the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. Or else where are those indictments?

One guy, Scooter Libby, made statements in the investigation that the prosecutors found untrue. So they indict just for that. Well, if the prosecutors know enough about who-leaked-what-when to prove charges like that, they SURELY know enough about who-leaked-what-when to indict under IIPA. If there were IIPA crimes. There weren't.

And we haven't even begun to hear Libby's side of the story yet. Zzzzzzzzzzz... wake us when they find him innocent.

But but but, perjury is deadly serious, you say, especially in a government official?

Well, yeah....It is serious....*whenever it's really and truly been committed*. You know, like when the Chief Executive of the whole United States lies under oath?

Sure looks like Ken Starr is a hero of democracy now, doesn't it?

Libby resigned within minutes of being indicted. Even though he's innocent, he figured he couldn't and shouldn't serve until he's been cleared. Same with Delay.

Now I forget.....did Clinton do likewise? (quick Wikipedia check) No, Clinton didn't. Hmmm. Sure looks like Scooter Libby and Tom Delay are heroes of democracy and clean government, doesn't it?

Bottom line: If the best the Left can do for 2006 is way over-play their hands on Katrina, Delay, Libby, Chappaquiddick or whatever - they'll lose. Again.

As a registered Libertarian, I have no party either.

(Sorry... couldn't resist. ;-) )

As to the actual question... of course. Or, at least (considering the Libertarians and all) I agree to hold the Republicans to the same standards as Clinton. ;-)
