I nearly doubled over in laughter when I read this item as I awoke this morning…..
O’Reilly Blasted For Coit Tower Comments – KRON4.com
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Supervisor Chris Daly is firing back at Fox News commentator Bill O’Reilly for comments he made on his radio show Wednesday that encouraged al-Qaida to “blow up” Coit Tower.
O’Reilly reacted to San Franciscans’ approval of Proposition I, which discourages military recruiters on public high school and college campuses.
Note to San Fran: I don’t advocate a terror attack on you. So I diverge with ole Bill on that part. But I wholeheartedly AGREE with the sentiment behind his remarks and support this proposal he made:
You know, if I’m the president of the United States, I walk right into Union Square, I set up my little presidential podium, and I say, “Listen, citizens of San Francisco, if you vote against military recruiting, you’re not going to get another nickel in federal funds. Fine. You want to be your own country? Go right ahead.” – via ThePoliticalTeen
Smokin’ Bill went over the line when he kept going, though…..
And if Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we’re not going to do anything about it. We’re going to say, look, every other place in America is off limits to you, except San Francisco. You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead.
However, I say ‘BRAVO’ for the idea that we stop all Federal funding to San Francisco. Not only due to the vote to stop military recruiting, but also the fact that it has been San Fran LIBERALS that brazenly trampled on the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution by outlawing handgun ownership by residents.
Whatever world they live in… they can have it to themselves. I do not want any of MY tax money going to support a city that clearly does not want to be part of the United States of America. But I certainly don’t want to see these former Americans living in the People’s Republic of Cisco hurt in a terrorist attack. Bill hurt his point tremendously by continuing his rant. Sometimes you just need to stop talking… or blogging. *grin*

O’Reilly is a populist blowhard and tends not to care that his flame-throwing tactics are often way over the top. By my reading, he’s almost inviting terrorists to blow up San Francisco. I agree that San Francisco voters should have voted down these measures, but I believe a more proportional response would be to review funding for defense projects, with the belief that if they do not want money spent on recruiting on campuses, then the have no need for any other funding from that department.
As a gay male, who has been to Iraq driving truck, putting my life on the line supporting the troops and supplying the people of Iraq, I have no desire to support the “Peoples Republic of Crisco”. I will never visit the “PRofC” nor support any event connected to the “PRofC”. I will support my right to protect myself the next time some gang banger decides to shoot at me.
Umm. Should we also withdraw federal protection from Quaker and Amish communities in the Midwest? If the motivation is religious rather than political should it make a difference?
I’m not particularly happy that my tax money goes to Colorado Springs, CO, which is home to Focus on the Family, The Traditional Values Coalition, Exodus, Haggards New Life Ministries, and which is also the congressional district that elected Caroline Musgrave, author of the anti-gay marriage amendment to the federal constitution, to Congress. Still I would not deny them federal protection or tax dollars, although I’m not sure they would be as fair in return.
I hate to tell you this unfortunate fact, but you are going to have to live with it. San Franciscans ARE Americans. What’s more, they are good people. You know who is a fan of SF? None other than Rush Limbaugh. He commented one time on how welcoming the average city folk were to him whenever he visits.
Besides, need I point out that NDT is now an official resident of that fair city? I’m sure he’ll have everything fixed up soon enough. lol. I look forward to his posts on culture-shock..
San Franciscans ARE Americans.
No, they’re not. They just happen to inhabit part of the continental North American landmass.
Why, lookee here, another left-wing anti-military website:

I am a longtime Castro-dwelling SF homo and I love SF in many ways, –the lack of snow is especially endearing– but there are some ways in which the inhabitants truly burn me. The most frequent and ingrained is the smug self-righteous moralizing humorless and clueless knee-jerk “progressivism” that infects so many of my fellows. (Not to put too fine a point on it). Most SFers of my aquaintance, who think they are special and conscious and aware and caring and, my personal favorite, spiritual but not religious (insert finger in throat) have a very very thinly veiled contempt for most of America (if they bother to veil it at all), including its military. OReilley is just publicly returning a smidgen of it. ‘Bout time, say I.
As for his remarks “inviting an AlQaeda attack”…please. Muslims just hang on his every word in making their plans for the new Caliphate. Yeah, right.
And, lest we forget, here’s some pictures of San France and Berkeley residents celebrating the deaths of 2000 soldiers in Iraq:

I would love to see someone in Congress put forth a bill withdrawing all military-related Federal spending from San Francisco though. No more contracts for Bechtel. No more military R&D for the unis and software companies. Wouldn’t that put the left in an awkward situation?
The idea that an entire city should be punished because of the decisions of those who vote there is absurd to me. There are many moderate and conservative people in San Francisco.
Imagine the reaction here and elsewhere if a well-known liberal pundit asked terrorists to attack Alabama or South Carolina.
O’Reilly says these things to get attention. He is not worth the time or the energy. And I’m guessing if the mayor suddenly decided to give O’Reilly a big humanitarion award and an opportunity to plug his latest book, O’Reilly would get there as soon as possible.
I also wonder why anyone here or elsewhere wants to punish the universities of San Francisco and the students there when they have not, to my knowledge, ever barred recruiters or announced plans to bar recruiters. This resolution was not binding and was more of a scream in the darkness at a time when many Americans feel they have no power or place left in their country.

A howl at the moon, anyway…
Well, I never would have voted for the resolution, but then I never would have voted against the repeal of Alabama’s laws against interracial marriage. A majority of Alabama voters disagreed with me. It’s easy for someone like O’Reilly to take shots at people to get publicity for himself, but ultimately the decision has little affect on him or anyone else.
I’m sorry, I hit the send button too quickly.
One of the other things that bothered me about O’Reilly’s remarks is that the Coit Tower is a tribute to firefighters. So not only did he suggest a terrorist attack, he specifically pointed out a tower that was a tribute to the same profession that gave so many of their lives (in New York and New Jersey) on 9/11. It’s a big slap in the face to firefighters. I doubt that tons and tons of firefighters in San Francisco voted for this military recruiters measure, and they didn’t deserve such a comment.
Besides, need I point out that NDT is now an official resident of that fair city? I’m sure he’ll have everything fixed up soon enough. lol.
The Vast Gay Right Wing Conspiracy (VGRWC) does seem to give me the challenging missions, don’t they? (puts on sunglasses, straightens tux lapels)
Don’t forget to go over and vote to see if I need a new codename………
I doubt that most people know that the Coit Tower has anything to do with firefighters.
The remark was in bad taste, obviously, even so.
The feeling of having no power… firstly, I don’t think this feeling has anything to do with the movement to get recruiters out of high schools… anyhow, the feeling isn’t based in reality. Individuals have very little power and always have. Even when it comes to local issues individuals can do very little in the ballot box. If they are a minority opinion they’re more or less sunk. Nothing has changed at *all*. Or at least, what may have changed is that the powerlessness meme has been exaggerated and inflated and fanned… seriously how often do we hear someone talking about the impending theocracy? This fantasy that a power hungry elite is taking over is romantic, but that doesn’t make it rational.
And I don’t know what people who want recruiters out of schools are thinking… and I don’t think it is about *this* war at all. I think it’s about the concept of military service in any way shape or form. What is *said* is not about this war, it’s about poor young men making the choice to serve, a choice these people don’t approve of. It’s about *other people’s children*. Do you think that any of the people pushing for the removal of recruiters fear their *own* children enlisting? And the thing about the kids being minors… how does one explain the same efforts to keep recruiters out of colleges? Those kids are impressionable minors too?
Do these people think that we don’t need a military at all? Maybe they really bought into the BS we tell our kids, to use their “words” and to not provoke the kid who teases you endlessly and to simply avoid the bully, and they thinks that actually works.
Is San Francisco the only city to outlaw handguns?
Washington DC has had one for a long time, and you can see how it’s helped out that crime ridden city…Chicago, too.
-I doubt that most people know that the Coit Tower has anything to do with firefighters.-
Since O’Reilly knew enough about the Tower to point it out, he probably knows about the firefighters.
-The feeling of having no power… firstly, I don’t think this feeling has anything to do with the movement to get recruiters out of high schools… a-
Some of them may feel powerless in regards to the military. Gays and lesbians who know if they go in the military and anyone ever finds out they’re gay, they will be kicked out and lose any of their benefits. These people may want to serve their country and in return, they are shunned. Not that this is a reason to ban military recruiters, I’m just giving their POV.
Some liberals do have family in the military (just look at Cindy Sheehan, who thankfully has gone back to obscurity). Other people, yes, many of them probably do have a hatred for the military that goes beyond the Iraq war. That’s San Francisco for you, it’s not necessarily an uber-liberal place (Gavin Newsom was elected as a pro-business Democrat and on many issues is probably more conservative than Willie Brown), but the liberals are well-organized. That’s typical of many places, because America is a diverse and fragmented country. And people like O’Reilly only fragment it all the more. They are secretly thrilled at events like this, because this gets them more publicity, more money, more attention.
“And I don’t know what people who want recruiters out of schools are thinking… and I don’t think it is about *this* war at all. ”
Actually I think you will find this is a common refrain across the entire country, blue or red state. And sadly, it’s mainly by parents and the PTA.
At what point, exactly, does O’Reilly invite, encourage etc. al-Qaeda to attack San Francisco?
He merely offered an example. Folks are getting too carried away with the Big Media’s misrepresentation of what he said.
TGC, this part certainly does sound like an encouragement to me. Maybe not, but I don’t know.
“You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead.”
Of course, that what the citizens of Sodom and Gommorah probably said too. 😉

Perhaps if you just focussed on the one sentence.

Was there any definitive statement from O’Reilly to al-Qaeda to attack San Francisco?
O’Reilly is one of the stupidest pundits around. It’s not only anti-American to say what he said merely because he disagrees with the local voters, but it’s also supremely stupid and ill-researched.
Remember that California pays the most Federal taxes (by far) of all states and gets back the least (they get only $.79 cents back for every dollar collected). If San Francisco were to ‘be their own country’ they presumably would not only receive Federal funds, but they wouldn’t pay any Federal taxes! This would actually mean more tax burden for other states (remember, San Francisco only gets back 79% of what they pay in Federal tax dollars); in effect, the Federal government would be fiscally worse off by allowing San Francisco to secede!
Now, if Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia, Montana, and Arkansas were to secede, we’d be rolling in Federal Tax Revenue!

Anyway, aside from being profoundly stupid, Bill O’Reilly has also proven himself to be anti-American and against local control and ‘States Rights’.
Oh, and he can shove his loofah you-know-where!
