Reports Suggest Zarqawi May Be Dead

November 20, 2005 by GayPatriot

OpenSourceMedia has a compilation of the reports coming in this afternoon of a fierce battle in Mosul today where eight al-Qaeda members blew themselves up rather than be caputured by US and Iraqi force.

Is Zarqawi dead? – OpenSourceMedia

I’m reluctant to get too excited yet. But this news sounds promising.

Bruce, I’m generally skeptical of early reports too. But I’ve been following this one pretty closely, and … well, who knows? We won’t know for sure until the DNA tests come back. Still, eight terrorist scum blew themselves up … that’s a good thing.

For what it’s worth, here’s my roundup on the affair.

If it is Zarqawi, let’s not do the expected and desecrate the corpse. Instead, return the body respectfully to his family and tribe in Jordan. They’re pissed’enuff at him that they will find the proper and fitting Bedouin method of declaring him anathema and casting him-out. Let his own family send his soul to Hell. By the attacks in Amman, he and his “crew” stepped over a cultural-line that we shoud respect for a change. …..I’m sure they all sorts of wickedly-subtle curses and ancient ways of dealing with a traitor to the family and tribe.

But I still want Bin Laden’s cleaned-skull, lined in gold, to be used as a candy dish on the head table in the White House State Dining Room.

Well I certainly don’t believe the US military will “…do the expected and desecrate the corpse” as Ted B. says at the start of his post, I’m not sure there would be much of a body left either way. Plus, with the actions taken by the al-Zarqwi family and tribe today – taking out full page ads in Jordanian papers today disowning their “brother” until the end of time – I don’t know who would acccept the body when FedEx shows up at the door. Who’d have thought we’d need a “Potter’s Field” for unloved terrorits?

Let us pray the reports are true. His death might take enough bravado out of the terrorists that Iraqi forces can make headway and our troops can start thinking about coming home.

I take exception to the idea that desacrating a corpse would be “expected” from US troops. Even if it was Bin Laden. We have the most professional military in the world. The *essence* of military discipline is to stop when the command is given to stop. Excessive brutality during a fight if they knew it was him? Sure. Making sure he dies in maximum pain? Given the chance. Messing up the body after he’s been dead and they finally identify it? No.

I like the idea of Bin Laden’s gold lined skull, but US troops are absolutely forbidden to take trophies. It’s an actual, and strictly enforced regulation.

It’s not the I expect our troops to desecrate his body, it’s that I expect that our enemies will expect and accuse our troops of desecration. Remember the incident in Afghanistan last months? And look at the fuss when the troops cornered Saddam’s sons.

As for Bin Laden’s skull. While the troops may be forbidden to take trophies, it’s “evidence” and needs to be sent to Washington, DC for “proper study”. Preferably by admiring Allied leaders while enjoying an after-dinner drink, cigars and some fine cheese.

It’s time that we have a National Doctrine for our adversaries once we’re goaded into a “combat relationship”. Up to a point you can retire quietly to Paris and enjoy exile in the company of the French; cross that line and your head gets shipped to the White House in a cardboard box, packed in dry-ice.

I’m curious what you think of Open Source Media infringing on someone elses trademark? It’s all over the blogosphere. Do a technorati on OSM and you’ll find stuff.

Hell, if a couple of rounds and a few rockets to the head is desecration, I say let’s go for it if that’s what it takes.

And I’m curious to know what you think about OSM’s apology, Eva.
