History has a way of making us forget what is non-essential about a great leader, and focus only on the essentials.

Except for a few brief moments during WW2, hardly anyone thought very much of Churchill while he was alive. Yet here we are.

My real point: Blair and Bush will one day be seen as the equivalent of Churchill – or of Truman at the very least – because of the way they dared to lead, in the face of TREMENDOUS domestic opposition and sniping, an actual war against Islamo-fascism.

Great posting, Dan. However, while Tony Blair is one of my favorites, he doesn’t measure up to Winston Churchill. No one has. And it is doubtful that anyone alive today will ever see the likes of Winston Churchill rise to power in either America or Britain.

My favorite Churchillism was an exchange between Sir Winston and Lady Astor, then-MP and an insufferable snob. After heated words between them in the halls of Parliament, Lady Astor sniffed: “Sir, if you were my husband, I’d put arsenic in your tea!”

Whereupon Churchill rejoined with: “Madam, if you were my wife, I would drink it!”

Churchill’s greatest contribution to advancing the cause of common sense and among the greatest quotes ever uttered:

“If you’re a Conservative at 20 you have no heart. If you’re a Liberal at 40 you have no brain.”
