One of Reagan’s Lions Now Belongs To The Ages

I was quite surprised to read the news of former South Carolina Carroll Campbell’s death yesterday of a heart attack. He was only 65 years old and had suffered from Alzheimer’s for the past four years.

Ex-SC Governor Carroll Campbell dies – Charlotte Observer

Campbell was one of President Ronald Reagan’s strongest supporters in the South and among America’s governors in the 1980s. Many credit Campbell with being the one of the key architects of solidifying the Republican South in the Reagan era.

After he was elected governor, I ran into him in Lancaster with the GOP strategist/Machiavellian that he considered his “little brother” — Lee Atwater.

This time, Campbell was surrounded by handlers, publicists and reporters — he was dressed like he was there for a wedding in a red power tie, starched white shirt and dark suit. Atwater slouched with no tie and rumpled road clothes.

No one knew it at the time, but Atwater would be dead of a brain tumor in less than two years at age 40. Campbell’s name was announced, and he took to the stage.

Atwater helped orchestrate Campbell’s national rise. They co-chaired Bush Sr.’s successful 1988 presidential campaign. Atwater was beaming. Someone asked him what he was thinking:

“Look at Carroll up there in those lights; he looks like a rock star.”

I remember thinking at the moment, I bet I know what they’re both really thinking:

President.

Here are some numbers to consider…..

As of today, the investigation by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has lasted 708 days.

Our hostages in Iran were held by Islamists for 444 days.

The entire Watergate investigation lasted 288 days.

Afghans Vote Again — We Are Winning War On Terror

These astounding poll results from ABC News….

77 percent of Afghans say their country is headed in the right direction — compared with 30 percent in the vastly better-off United States.

Ninety-one percent prefer the current Afghan government to the Taliban regime, and 87 percent call the U.S.-led overthrow of the Taliban good for their country.

Osama bin Laden, for his part, is as unpopular as the Taliban; nine in 10 view him unfavorably.

Progress fuels these views: Despite the country’s continued problems, 85 percent of Afghans say living conditions there are better now than they were under the Taliban.

Eighty percent cite improved freedom to express political views. And 75 percent say their security from crime and violence has improved as well. After decades of oppression and war, many Afghans see a better life.

Log Cabin Conspiring Against Christmas?

In the now yearly battle of secularists to erase all references to the birth of Christ from events happening in December, have Log Cabin (Republicans) now joined the cause?

Christian Grantham seems to think so.

I was always suspicious of GayPatriot’s claim that the leadership of the Log Cabin Republicans (LCR) was in bed with the liberal elites. Then, I visited their website calendar this evening to see what was coming up and saw a special “Holiday Gathering” in Denver, CO on the schedule! It appears that LCR has now joined the President, First Lady, Wal-Mart and the entire liberal secularist War On Christmas.

I’m glad my blog-ally Christian’s eyes have finally opened about Log Cabin, but I would argue that this is perhaps the weakest piece of evidence yet. With “Liberal Cabin’s” largest contributor having his money devoted firmly in the left fringe of America, is it any doubt that Guerriero and Brownson ask how high when Tim Gill says “bring down Bush”? (Much more on the money trail in coming days…)

I am increasingly at a loss to know why Liberal Cabin even uses the word “Republican” in their name? But that’s a battle for 2006! (And more on that later as well….)

For now, Merry Christmas Log Cabin!
