Open Thread on Bush’s Sunday Night Speech
Feel free to leave your comments “live” during the President’s speech tonight which begins at 9:00PM Eastern Time.
I will do a posting after the speech with my thoughts.
UPDATE: Some advance excerpts of the speech have been released…. The Corner has ‘em.
On the challenges in Iraq:
“Some look at the challenges in Iraq, and conclude that the war is lost, and not worth another dime or another day. I don’t believe that. Our military commanders do not believe that. Our troops in the field, who bear the burden and make the sacrifice, do not believe that America has lost. And not even the terrorists believe it. We know from their own communications that they feel a tightening noose – and fear the rise of a democratic Iraq.”
On the consequences of withdrawal:
“It is also important for every American to understand the consequences of pulling out of Iraq before our work is done. We would abandon our Iraqi friends – and signal to the world that America cannot be trusted to keep its word . . . . We would hand Iraq over to enemies who have pledged to attack us – and the global terrorist movement would be emboldened and more dangerous than ever before.”

Some look at the challenges in Iraq,
Why dance around it. We know that it’s the liberals.

The President really needs to hit a homerun with this one. It’s already recieved a lot of hipe… so hopefully it’ll be convincing. Maybe finally war critics will shut up. Perhaps thats just wishful thinking.
Comment by Kevin W — December 18, 2005 @ 7:58 pm - December 18, 2005
The President has already hit many home runs with many excellent speeches, recently and over the past 2-3 years, explaining his plan for victory in Iraq.
Unfortunately, the media and Democrats filter him out very heavily, “respond” to points he never made, fail to respond to points he did make, etc. (like some commentors here
) and I doubt that will change.

He has a blue tie on tonight. I wonder what the dems will think that means.

good, he acknowledged that some of the intelligence was wrong, but takes responsibility for going in there. still the right decision — hammer than one home, W

He looks good tonight. He sometimes looks a little stiff speaking from the oval office. He’s engaged tonight.
Comment by PatriotPal — December 18, 2005 @ 9:05 pm - December 18, 2005
Nothing new, but the liberals still won’t get it.

Talking with his hands like his dad. Where’s Dana Carvey?

is someone trying to send a morse code message over his right shoulder (on our left)? there is, at times, a blinking light/refelction.
Comment by PatriotPal — December 18, 2005 @ 9:08 pm - December 18, 2005
I just see his reflection over his left, but it looks like someone is looking from behind the US flag.
Comment by ThatGayConservative — December 18, 2005 @ 9:10 pm - December 18, 2005
maybe its karl rove behind the flag? pay NO attention to the man behind the flag!

Good. Don’t let Congress try to run the conflict.
Comment by ThatGayConservative — December 18, 2005 @ 9:14 pm - December 18, 2005
Its a lot of the same from the past month, BUT if people are watching, this could get him another point or two in the polls. Its one of his better delivered addresses he’s done in a while.
Comment by PatriotPal — December 18, 2005 @ 9:17 pm - December 18, 2005
OH MY! he said CHRISTmas!!!!!!

“Victory or defeat”.
Why so black and white? Why not a nice liberal shade of gray?
Comment by ThatGayConservative — December 18, 2005 @ 9:19 pm - December 18, 2005
I think you and I are it, Pal.
Comment by ThatGayConservative — December 18, 2005 @ 9:20 pm - December 18, 2005
Oh jeesh he wished us all a merry Christmas and a happy Hannukkah… He didn’t say Happy Holidays!! There goes that speech right down the drain…
Anyway… I thought it was … good. Somewhat convincing, but probably not for hardcore anti-war people.

TV’s in a different room for me, so I didn’t live comment.
Very effective, I thought. His explanation of “defeatism” vs. constructive criticism (which is good) got my attention.
Comment by Calarato — December 18, 2005 @ 9:23 pm - December 18, 2005
hardcore anti-war peeps will never be convinced.

How does Nacny Pelosi spin this one?

I wish you all would go back and read this thread from the beginning.
You are ALL, indeed, coming unglued. Please don’t stroke each other like that in a public place.
SNAP OUT OF IT!!

Also, I thought he did a great job acknowledging the sacrifices and telling his crazy-hate critics, Look, I don’t take any of these decisions lightly.
The hard core critics won’t be convinced – but they don’t matter. The political center matters, and gets a good reminder that he’s NOT the hateful caricature portrayed by moonbats.

‘monty’ talking to himself again…

BTW…..
Merry f*cking Xmas and Happy Holy Days. Same for the Jewish persuasion.
And “Season’s Greetings” to all the other lifestyle choices out there.
Sincerely,
All the best to you all.

Why do you always think it’s ALL about you, Calarato?
Get a grip!
Bush IS getting better with his speeches. However, he’d have to do alot to regain my trust. I sincerely hope he does.

You mean like spending more time dumping his DNA on a dress instead of dealing with terrorism?
Comment by ThatGayConservative — December 18, 2005 @ 10:01 pm - December 18, 2005
Why don’t one of you give him a blowjob so we can impeach him?
Comment by hank — December 18, 2005 @ 10:14 pm - December 18, 2005
Say some more, please, TGC.
LMAO.
A dress can be cleaned….a “goddamned piece of paper” like the Constitution can’t be dry cleaned……and the dead can’t come back to life.
From this point on, you talk to yourself…..needlessly, as usual.

Yup
They drive every sane person outta here. Without a dissenting voice they’ll turn on each other, and the world will be a better place.
Comment by hank — December 19, 2005 @ 12:38 am - December 19, 2005
Hank, you have yet to demonstrate either sanity or goodwill, so you needn’t attempt to lecture your betters, either directly or via your preferred snarkiness.
Comment by Calarato — December 19, 2005 @ 12:49 am - December 19, 2005
Before I forget Hank: Do also keep working on that “walking away” thing that you promised to do here, 27 minutes BEFORE your above comment, and promised in other places as well, yet can never stick to after having made the big announcement.
