Is The Weather In Roanoke THIS Bad?

February 20, 2006 by Bruce Carroll

Another WSLS weatherman admits struggle with heroin – Roanoke.com (h/t – Drudge)

Not one, but two WSLS (Channel 10) meteorologists — Marc Lamarre and Jamey Singleton — have struggled with a heroin addiction in recent months, according to an interview with Singleton that aired on WSLS’s late-night newscast Friday.

“Anyone can fall into this,” Singleton said. “It’s hard, it’s a disease and it’s been rough.”

Singleton said the toughest part of his ordeal was finding out that his friend and neighbor, Lamarre, 36, suffered a near-fatal heroin overdose on the evening of Feb. 2. Lamarre is recovering, according to WSLS, but he is no longer employed with the station.

The most unfortunate part of this story is that it wasn’t cocaine so I couldn’t do any lame “let it snow” jokes….

Well, you did break the story on Kurt Cobain’s birthday… maybe you could tie that in somehow.

The same way that Rush Lamebrain lost his weight–and his hearing, too?

Wow! A libtard admitting that Rush lost weight. I thought the line was that he was still fat.

Of course what’s really pathetic about your dumbass post is that Rush is not a weatherman.

    What a fucking tool.

I guess I just don’t get how addiction is a disease. No doubt it’s devistating but it’s not like you can *catch* it, after all.

I do realize that for some people it’s a case of “self-medication” but in those cases the addiction is still not a disease, it’s a reaction to some other problem.

My hometown. I visited for the weekend and arrived on Friday night just in time to hear the mea culpa. Strange. The equally shocking rumor (for Roanoke that is) is that Singlton and Lemarre are gay. It would make most people there feel much better if there was some “explanation”. You know, cause we are all druggies, too. Small towns= too much time on your hands + nosey people. Totally off subject, but my family’s interest in the “lurid”, gay sub-story sort of set me off.

I grew up in a *very* small town. I don’t think it is necessarily that it makes people feel better, exactly, but it maybe makes them feel safer. Drug addiction is a scary, exotic, thing that happens on television and in far away and dangerous cities. It shakes people’s foundations to find out different. It doesn’t have to be that they think that gays are all druggies for them to feel a little less vulnerable.

Of course the illusion of small town isolation and safety is just that. My baby sister had the worst time convincing even the police that people in the apartment building she managed were selling a drug (I believe it was crack cocaine) because they insisted that they simply didn’t *have* that drug in that town *anywhere*.

Okay, I know that doesn’t really help much. Sorry. 🙁

    Dear All:

I am a HUGE fan of Jamey Singleton — I have not missed the weather on WSLS, but a few times since Jamey Singleton started his career with WSLS. I have one HUGE debate….Is he gay? He recently did a Q99 “The Dating Game” segment so I am confused? I would love to meet him in person! I think he is one of the coolest guys in the whole world! I think he is so sincere, funny and one of those people that you would love to call your best friend.

I also hear that Lamarre had anabolic steriods, a pain medication, perscription pills and heroin in his system the night of the incident so naturally he would go into heart failure with all those drugs.

In response to the inquiry above… No, he’s not gay! Perhaps a mama’s boy in a HUGE way but def. not gay. I know him very well and find it amusing that people assume so much when they know SO little. He didn’t do the “dating game” to cover up… he likes girls! Get that through your head people…you’re probably wondering how I know so much and how I am so certain… well, he’s one of the closest people to my husband & myself. In fact we just had a “double date” this past weekend… and guess what?!?! He was with a GIRL!! Thanks and have a great day!

Hi-I’m not gay, but I’m conservative and live in Roanoke, so 2 outta 3 ain’t bad. I’m not homophobic either. LOL. I surfed in because today Jamey got fired and I am trying to find out why. In spite of the drug addiction they were still both wonderful people and Marc in particular was very involved in our community. I’m a former user and addict who fortunately came to her senses and I have 22 yrs clean and sober. From what little I have been able to pick up apparently Jamey has posted a supposedly provocative pic of himself on a gay site somewhere, and someone emailed it to the station and busted him, so they fired him on a morals clause and announced it as the reason (just the clause not the reason). They were grandious, however, announcing how “wonderful, that all the community knows they were working with him on his treatment program” . If this is the real reason, (short of showing his genitals in the picture or something inappropriate) I hope he sues them for sexual discrimination. That is against the law now isn’t it? I know he’s clean because he has to do the drug test thing a lot. Just my 2 cents. Oh, p.s., the comments about people self medicating themselves—-it is very true. I do suffer from bipolar disorder to this day and still see a doctor. It has taken me all these years to even understand that I was trying to balance my extreme mood swings. I would never wish a depressive disorder on anyone and without having it no one can begin to understand what it’s like to go into the “dark places” without a choice. I am perfectly sane and have been a branch manager for a major employment company for 15 years, so I am not a crazy wack job speaking. I’ll get off my soap box. I just get a little crazy with people who have no understanding of severe mental illness and really choose not to. It really IS a disease-not a weakness of just say no. *smile*

I just saw the edited version of “the photo” that supposedly led to Jamey’s being fired. It was cropped just below the bellybutton. If it is genuine, it shows Jamey wearing a tee shirt and he seems to be looking down, and his left hand appears to have soap lather or whatever in it. There is very little skin showing, save for his fairly decent looking biceps. I would be VERY curious to see the actual, unedited version of the photo.

From the gossip I have heard from guys who claim to have seen Marc and Jamey work out at some Gym in Roanoke, Jamey has a pretty fine build. I have often wondered if he had a big hairy chest or was more the smoothe, buffed type. The photo did little to answer MY questions.

Personal curiosity notwithstanding, I feel bad that someone would post a photo of Jamey without his knowledge or permission. That is prety low. And if it was about revenge, then I hope the poster gets his just deserts.

As for Jamey, he has struggled, for sure. But most of us out here in TV Land simply enjoyed his enthuisiastic, friendly and thorough weather forecasts. He was passionate about his work and for that I give him credit. He is a human being and just because he was a “local boy who made good” he is not Superman. I personally think he’s a cutey, and whatever his orientation I hope he has true friends to stand by him through this embarassing ordeal. My only regret is that I was not on the email list of those who got to see the whole enchilada. 😉

I wish Jamey the best. He certainly has many admirers, both male and female who would love to take him home and just give him a hug.

Puhleeese, Jamey is having a hard time dealing with his sexuality. that’s why he’s doing what he is doing. It’s catching up to him. I see him at “The Park” all the time. He also tried to pick me up a number of times. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jamey, but I also know the crowd he runs with and they are trouble.

It is such a shame when somebody struggles so hard with their sexuality – pretending to like girls, going on double-dates with unsuspecting couples, etc. But the biggest, saddest thing about all of this is all of the anecdotal experience I have with men who fought their sexuality so much and ended up using heroin. I’m not sure what the high is all about – and perhaps it’s the ultimate disengagement from one’s body, but the heroin addicts I know have been disproportionately closeted or struggling gay men. It’s quite sad, really.

I agree with Mark. I have a close friend who went through just about the same think Jamey did. Of course, what was all behind it? His sexual orientation and a father who was the King of D’Nile.

He ended up loathing himself, dying for daddy’s love and approval and getting into all sorts of addictive and criminal behavior. I think the story is ratehr common.

I feel for Jamey. After seeing a lengthy interview with him, I am convinced he is either out of touch or thinks he can someow justify being seen in the bars somehow. When you are a local personality you can;t get away with that. He tired and it blew up in his face.

IMHO the photo was the last straw. The network probably heard of his hangouts and the folks he was hangin with. The morals clause is so they can get rid of people who make them look bad any time. And they did.

I think Jamey is a decent dude. I think the issues below the surface are far mnore serious than a mere nude photo that got posted broadly. And why in the world would anyone send that sort of thing to his bosses?

I hope he survives all this, learns a hard lesson and does great things with his life.

Regarding comment # 20: You have seen him at The Park (a gay bar in Roanoke) and your point is???

Let’s say I saw him at Hooters. What does that prove or even indictate? Absolutely nothing.

The old adage comes to mind: I can fix the toilet 100 times but no one ever calls me a plumber. But be seen in a gay bar once and I am automatically lablelled a homosexual.
