Brokeback Fan Breaks Own Bank For Film’s Famous Shirts

February 22, 2006 by GayPatriot

Whew. And I thought my obsession with Back To The Future bordered on crazy!

Brokeback Shirts Go For $100,000 – CNN.com

Tom Gregory just spent more than $100,000 on two used cowboy shirts.

And he couldn’t be happier.

The shirts are the ones worn by the ill-fated lovers, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, in Oscar front-runner “Brokeback Mountain.” The shirts that represent their relationship. The shirts that, to Gregory, represent the ongoing plight of gays for acceptance in society.

“They really are the ruby slippers of our time,” said Gregory, 45.

Actually, I have to say it would be kind of cool to own real movie props like that. As I always say, if you got $100,000 to dump, you can dump it where ever you want. (Okay, I don’t “always say” that….)

But don’t nobody wanna nuzzle no slippers.

That guy needs to get a life. The money he spent on some Wal-Mart shirts that he doesn’t intend to wear or display should have been donated to HIV and AIDS-related causes.

Peter, #2, since you’ve sounded like a “conservative” in previous comments I am surprised you don’t believe the guy has a right to spend his money any way he wants. Anyway, it’s possible, given how strongly he apparently feels about gay rights, that he also contributes money to the causes you cite.

Bruce & 2: Keep in mind that the money he spent went to a charity that helps children. Besides, #3 is 100% right as well.

Jack, you are right. I stand corrected if the money he paid for those shirts went to charity.

And yes, I am conservative with no quotation marks. If someone wants to spend money on themselves and help the economy along, they can do it with my blessing. I just have this thing about people taking pop culture and obsessing over it. I mean, I’m a big fan of “Bewitched” but that doesn’t mean I have every TV collectible under the sun.

However, I do have a pic of me in front of the WB set that they used for exterior shots of the Stephens’ house! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    But that’s all.

Vera would rather the red ruby slippers.

The blue gingham dress? Not so much.

#8 – Actually, it was part of the Screen Gems set, but when WB bought out Screen Gems, it became part of the lot. (I had a late friend who was a production assistant at WB and he showed me around the lot before he passed away.)

If you ever saw the opening of “Friends,” part of it (the fountain area) was shot at the old Screen Gems lot, right down the street from the Partridge Family house. (Yes, I was there too.)

Besides the Partridge and Stephen houses, there’s the Nelson home (“I Dream of Jeannie”) and the Cleaver home, which doubled as the Kravitz’s house in “Bewitched.”

PS – I also got to meet Gladys herself, the late actress Sandra Gould, in 1997 and HAD to ask her for an “ABNER!” yell. Of course, she obliged. She was a real sweetie.

    Regards,
    Peter Hughes.

Peter, I’m not a collector either. However, I live in a house I bought from actor Willie Aames (“Eight Is Enough” and “Charles In Charge”). It was built in the 1800s and I wish Willie had finished his remodeling of the master bedroom and loft/library before selling it to me.

Willie Aames? Really? Is he still around? Seems like a nice guy, but talk about a lower-tier TV star…he played second fiddle to Scott Baio, of all people.

Maybe he didn’t have enough residuals from his shows and failed movies to do the renovations.

As Bette Midler used to say, “Why bother?”
