Where In The World…. This Week?

A big shout-out to the Patriots (especially Robbie @ Malcontent) in Chicagoland…. where it is apparently still winter. Brrrr.

Anyway, I’m here for the annual BIO (biotech industry) convention. There was a gaggle of loonies picketing outside my hotel when I arrived. Literally just five (5) animal rights activists protesting biotech research. I remember a few years ago in San Diego there were thousands of protestors on opening day… all with signs about the end of the world due to biotech. I guess the Professional Protestors are off somewhere supporting dictators or illegal immigration today.

Blogging will be sporadic as I’ll be in sessions a lot. Or workin’ da booth. I’ll try to write at night for publish the next day. That usually works for me.

**UPDATE: Ooops, I almost forgot! Former President Bill Clinton is speaking at the Tuesday lunch. I happen to respect the Office of the President and will politely applaud and not do something wacky that disrespectful people would do to our current President. I hope to take photos!***

  1. You could just politely “not applaud”. I’m sure others will applaud enough to cover you.

  2. Genetic engineering has been going on for thousands of years with animal husbandry and crop selection that have produced varieties startlingly different than the wild strains. Have you ever seen how small horses used to be- the size of ponies or large dogs. Dogs of course are the most amazing example of un-natural selction: what force of nature could have produced a French poodle? And from the same species that yields both Great Danes and Chihuahuas?

So the hysteria about doing it to crops in a faster and more precise matter seems to me somewhat overblown, especially in light of the enormous benefits it could produce. How many millions of lives saved from hunger and malnutrition and possibly even disease, what environmental damage averted by a reduced need for chemical pesticides and clearcutting, how much will living standards improve all over the world from increased productivity? The people who protest against it have the luxury to do so. Why do they need golden rice when they will never have to worry about a vitamin A deficency? To me it’s just sad that they would deny life-saving benefits to those in need because of purely hypothetical concerns. Has there ever been a single documented case of someone getting sick from “Frankenfoods” or drought-resistant crops running rampant like kudzu?

I think biotech is pretty exciting. Sure, oversight is prudent, but I don’t understand those who would ban it entirely.

  3. Agree.

Just to make sure there are no misunderstandings: my comment #1 refers to Bruce’s Update about Bill Clinton attending the convention.

  4. Hey Bruce…

Did ya get tickets to Wrigley?

Make sure you try to get to the following:

    1. Murphy’s Bleachers Bar (across from the bleacher gate at Wrigley)
    2. Giordano’s for a deep dish, or…
    3. ANYPLACE that serves an Italian Beef (dipped, with hot AND sweet peppers).

    Damn, I’m hungry…

  5. I agree with the above poster…do the polite “clap-clap-clap-clap” and then sit on your hands. All the other liberal people will orgasm themselves into a standing ovation.

  6. You a better person than I am. I wouldn’t attend the damn lunch AT ALL. But, then again, I can afford to skip a lunch or two.

  7. Actually, the first and foremost do not miss place to eat is the Frontera Grill on North Clark, just north of the loop — Rick Bayless’s restaurant. And if you find yourself on Adams, bow your head for me in memory of The Berghoff, which closed 2/28.

  8. WHAT? The Berghoff CLOSED?

I just lost what little faith I had in humanity. AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH!

  9. Yup, NDT. The Berghoff is no more, although I understand their microbew is still in production.

BUT, it ain’t the same wihtout one a’dem gorgeous Corned Beef sammiches at noontime.

Randolp Street meatpacking concerns, however, still do a mean lunch biz for those that can get out and back into the loop inside of an hour!
