Larry Sabato Calls Log Cabin Tactics A “Mistake”

Agenda Trumping Party for Homosexual Political Groups – CNSNews.com
In the GOP, the Log Cabin Republicans (LCRs) state on their website that “We are loyal Republicans. We believe in low taxes, limited government, strong defense, free markets, personal responsibility and individual liberty.”
Still, as Cybercast News Service previously reported, the organization did not endorse President Bush for re-election in 2004 because of his lack of support for same-sex marriage.
During an interview in the “Advocate,” a magazine for homosexuals, LCR President Patrick Guerriero said: “Are we first and foremost a Republican organization, or are we first and foremost a gay organization with a role to play inside the Republican Party? The board and I made a conscious decision on the second, and that has affected everything we have to do and continue to do.”
That philosophy has drawn fire from a number of conservative homosexual bloggers, including Bruce Carroll, Jr., a former Log Cabin member and founder of the Gaypatriot weblog.
“The fact is Guerriero and the Log Cabin board have sold out the very foundation of Log Cabin in order to become the new darlings of the Gay Left,” Carroll posted on his site, adding that he hopes the group “can, once and for all, put the ‘Republican’ back in Log Cabin.”
Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, told Cybercast News Service that such conflicts are common within organizations like the Stonewall Democrats and the Log Cabin Republicans.
Sabato was more critical of the Log Cabin decision not to support Bush in 2004 since it meant no matter which candidate won the election, the group would have less access to the White House.
“That’s a mistake,” he said. “People are free to do whatever they want to do, but if you construct an election so that heads you lose and tails you lose, you probably haven’t handled things the smart way.”

I know Dan may have linked to this story before, but I couldn’t resist noting that Patrick, who is paid in the six digits to run this political organization, got slapped down by one of the premier political professors in the nation. And lil ol’ me, with my unpaid hobby being a snarky bastard, had my position validated by the same premier political professor.

(Full disclosure statement: I was contacted by Randy Hall for an interview for this story and was not available to meet his deadline. I’m also not crazy about news organizations that use the word “homosexual” instead of gay. You just know they don’t like us…..)
