Hannity & Colmes Actually Agree…

…Fred Phelps and his band of loonies are shameful bigots.

Expose The Left has the screeching video of one of Phelps’ minions.

I also think that it is very positive that the American Right is calling out the hate of Fred Phelps (a registered Democrat and Al Gore supporter I might add).

  1. The right didn’t care at all when Phelp’s message was simply an anti-gay one. Nobody on the right cared at all when Fred Phelps was picketing funerals of AIDS victims, which he has been doing since the mid to early 90′s. Nor were they upset when Phelps picketed Matthew Shepard’s funeral in 1998. They only are denouncing him now because he is picketing the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq.

So, no. People like Sean Hannity don’t need a pat on the back for now opposing Fred Phelps. Hannity’s message hasn’t changed, it’s Phelps’ message that has.

  2. Inferring that Phelps is a “liberal” by his association with Gore is about the same as inferring that Bush is a Nazi. Shall we bring up the bigoted past comments and associations of such people as Strommond, Helms, Dannymeyer, Rorbach, etc.? And thus claim that all conservatives are bigots?

Once again Bruce, you are using a tactic that the Right has often criticized the Left for using.

    _____

And for those who make much ado about nothing, the reason I address my posts directly to Bruce, or Dan, is simply that in the past there has been some confusion on both my part and on the part of others, as to who wrote the original opinions that I am commenting on.

  3. Yeah, I thought the Gore link was a bit hypocritcal after the “painting too broad a stroke” post, but I wasn’t going to comment on it. But hey, anyone who can see good in the current GOP leadership is painting with broad strokes to begin with!

  4. And to say Fred Phelps is an Al Gore supporter is particularly misleading because, by using the present tense, it implies that he still is. When in fact, Gore’s become such an enemy that the WBC picketed Al Gore’s father’s funeral in 1998.

    Comment by Erik — April 19, 2006 @ 10:29 pm - April 19, 2006

  5. Gee, does your post mean that commend conservative, republican nutcases like Pat Robertson? Does he represent all conservatives? I don’t think so.

It’s disheartening that you’ve chosen to bring up Fred Phelps name to connect him with liberals. He and his minions (ie family) are simply a bunch of sick individuals. As Erik points out, gays (both conservative and liberal) knew this many years before mainstream conservatives “discovered” this fact with Phelps’ picketing of military funerals.

Phelps’ antics at funerals of gays were reported in the national press for years, but did people (again, conservative or liberal) come out in droves to protect the dignity and humanity of their families at these funerals? no sir-eee bob.

By the way, Phelps has stated he remains a democrat only because “the party deserted him, but he didn’t want to desert the party”.

Your post is false and it’s bad taste that you’ve chosen to use Phelps to attack liberasl other gay people. Phelps is the kind of person that gay conservatives and liberals should join together to work against.

  6. PS – If you’re so fond of posting pictures, how about that lovely picture of Rumsfeld in the 80s with a big smile on his face shaking hands Saddam Huessin? There’s one for ya.

  7. #1 – “The right didn’t care at all when Phelp’s message was simply an anti-gay one…”

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt! Wrong answer, Erik! You meant, THE DEMOCRATS didn’t care.

Because, you see, that photo Bruce has at the end of the posts is the Phelps being glad-handed by the Gores. Yup. AL GORE. OK?

Now as for whether Gore is an enemy of Phelps today – because, you say, Phelps had picketed Gore Sr.’s funeral in 1998 – Well, Phelps pickets the funerals of Republicans or right-wing figures as much or more. In other words, Erik: Huh??? Where (or what) the hell is your basic logic here?

You seem to be saying that the fact that Phelps picketed Gore Sr.’s funeral exonerates the Democrats of their active support of Phelps in the 1980s and 90s… but, you also seem to assume, the fact that Phelps equally pickets Republican or conservative funerals somehow DOESN’T exonerate Republicans or conservatives of an involvement with Phelps that THEY’VE NEVER HAD to begin with (since, in reality, only Democrats have ever supported Phelps politically).

What kind of weird, twisted pretzel logic is that???????????

Add whatever you want. The fact is that, in the US, it costs nothing to be a registered anything. I’ve been a registered Republican, when I wanted to vote in the Republican primary, and a registered Democrat, when I wanted to vote in the Democratic primary. And I’ve been a registered unenrolled (in MA, independant).

And, regardless of what Phelps might have said about who he supported, so what? I could easily say that I was a supporter of Sun Myung Moon, and who would anyone–even you–be to differ?

  9. OK Calarato, go ahead and argue that the Democrats, Al Gore and particular, are vehemently anti-gay. I then will argue that Josephine Baker was a segregationist and a Nazi.

I mean, really, talk about twisted.

You seem to be saying that the fact that Phelps picketed Gore Sr.’s funeral exonerates the Democrats of their active support of Phelps in the 1980s and 90s…

Um, your claim that the Democrats–presumptively, the Democratic party–provided active support of the Phelps in the 1980s and 90s is based on…what?

    Cite chapter and verse.

  11. It is much more simple than all the above IMO. One listening to this bloviating, boorish person, Shirley Phelps Roper on Hannity and Colmes the other night could only conclude there are a few cranial screws she needs to have adjusted. To picket funerals is wrong in my book period.

  12. is that a woman. I’ve seen transvestites that are a lot more womanly than that creature. I guess if you are as inbred as that “family” is then that’s what you’re going to end up with.

Steroids can really mess one up, can’t they.

And I’d kill to look as good as some transvestites — at least, in terms of their wardrobe.

  15. raj writes: “I could easily say that I was a supporter of Sun Myung Moon, and who would anyone–even you–be to differ?”

I’m guessing you don’t begin on the premise that people are telling the truth unless there’s a strong indication to believe otherwise? I think you just punched the liberal ticket, raj… when you argue you’ll say anything to be able to participate (and influence) a primary or general election, eh?

I know, I know; the rules let you do it… it’s a valid defense for those of little moral fabric. The truth is you’re neither a GOPer, Democrat or Independent and ought to stay out of primary elections because you gain access to the polling booth via a lie.

Oh, Matt, more with this “lie” silliness. I don’t know how it is in Michigan, but here in Massachusetts–at the behest of the two major political parties–anyone can register Republicrat, Demoblican or whatever (there are other political parties) on the day of the primary election at the government run and financed polling places, vote in the respective party’s primary, and, on exiting the polling place, re-register as “unenrolled” (“independent” in most states, but a few years ago, there was actually an “Independent” party in MA). Them’s the rules. How is what I do a lie? I’m conforming to the rules as were laid down. I’m a perfect conservative.

Just to let you know, in at least one parliamentary democracy with which I am familiar–Germany–one actually has to be a dues-paying member of a political party in order to have a voice in that party’s leadership, representation in parliament, and leadership in government. That isn’t the case in the US. Andere Laender, andere Sitten.

  18. It’s good to see people are finally calling Fred Phelps out on his B.S.

Should note, Fred Phelps was a register democrat until 1992, when he says the Clintons back stabbed him, over what i do not know, but he really does not represent either side, he is just a insane preacher.

    Comment by Robert Bayn — April 20, 2006 @ 12:20 pm - April 20, 2006

  19. Phelps is courting attention and controversy. The “church” doesn’t care about condemnation, it’s being ignored and irrelevant that they fear. They are deliberately baiting as many people as they can. Maybe the best way to handle them is to not even dignify them with publicity, save of course to pass overdue bans on any kind of protest or demonstration at funerals. Then treat them as embarassing senile aunt at the reunion who babbles incoherently while everyone just rolls their eyes and continues their conversation without a second of further attention. My guess is nothing would get under the Phelps’ skin more.

Whether you’re aiming planes at buildings or bombing abortion clinics it takes RELIGION to hate this insanely. Look at her eyes. It’s about as bad as a Christian Zionist leader waging a Holy war against Muslims where he believes his saved ass will go to heaven for trying to kill them all. Oh wait, we already have that.
