Well, it must be so…. CNN is reporting it after all! (h/t: TimBlair)
Based on average scores, northwestern states generally ranked highest while the bottom-ranking states were mostly in the northeast. One exception was Vermont, which ranked third. Washington state drivers ranked second. Drivers in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and the District of Columbia ranked at the bottom, with D.C. finishing just ahead of Rhode Island.
Bottom Ten = Stupidest Drivers:
42. Pennsylvania 82.1
43. New Mexico 81.5
44. Connecticut 80.9
45. Hawaii 80.7
46. Maryland 79.5
47. New York 79.4
48. New Jersey 78.6 (Tie)
48. Massachusetts 78.6 (Tie)
50. Washington, D.C. 76.5
51. Rhode Island 75.1
From personal experience, I can also say with confidence that some of America’s worst drivers are in this list of stupidest drivers (*cough* Maryland *cough*). Maybe there’s a connection?

Wouldn’t have a thing to do that those are some of the densest populated states and you have to go out of your way to hit a cow in the red states.
Shoulda mentioned San Diego. I thought NY was better.
LOL….great post, GP! I live (and drive) in MD, but first learned to drive where I grew up (in CA)… and you’re absolUTEly right, MD and DC have some of the shittiest drivers i’ve ever seen, anywhere. I’ve always thought that, but I think the Boston area is the worst for drivers. They do stunts with cars up there that I couldn’t imagine if I hadn’t seen them with my own eyes. I don’t think it has anything to with politics, just stupidity and numbness in general..lol
We blue-staters might be bad drivers, but at least we still have all our teeth.
Forget stupid drivers — how about stupid signs? Welcome to Pennsylvania, the only state I know of where a stop sign doesn’t necessarily mean stop. We have “stop except right,” “stop unless forward,” and similar signs, with the qualifying text small, under the stop sign. Or how about those verbless signs that leave you wondering what the hell is going on, like “left lane,” just “left lane,” nothing about the left lane.
I’ve never seen such weird road signs anywere like here.
My guess is, they drove through Atlanta in the middle of the night.
vaara, I guess you’ve never dated a guy from Vermont. I have; the whole dentures thing wasn’t pretty and he was 22.
Re #1 You would probably have to go out of your way to hit a corn stalk in a red state, too.
#1 – Please explain how “density of population” has any relationship to low scores on a driving intelligence test?
I’m at a loss…
btw, I think VA drivers are pretty shitty, too. Where does VA rank in these results?
NW drivers are intelligent? Please explain how the dumbasses we have on our roads in the Puget Sound can do so well on the test. They(we) drive full speed in pounding rain, think fog is just another opportunity to accelerate, and do the door dance at on-ramps and intersections.
Perhaps because test scores don’t have a damn thing to do with how they drive — in other words, it’s yet more junk stats.
Hey HDBiker… Bruce has it right. WTF does density have to with driver knowledge tests? Unless you mean that there are a higher number of really stupid people living in those mostly Democrat dominated states?
Hmmm, no, that couldn’t be what you meant.
What I like is the other GayLefties (raj baby) jumped on board that ship before it even passed the basic “smart” test. LOL, you couldn’t write this kind of stuff for a movie. D-U-M-B.
Oh be real. NM and HI aside, you’re talking about states that constitute the most populace area in the nation. More people, more drivers and more bad drivers; simple numbers, nothin to do with “blue” and “red” states. Or did Anne Coulter and Sean Hannity tell you to think this?
Virginia may have only made #28 on this, but if you looked at Northern Virginia by itself I assure you it would be much higher on the list.
Whoever did this survey hasn’t spent much time driving in Nebraska (particularly Omaha), Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas (particularly Dallas), Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida (particularly Miami and Tampe).
I believe California qualifies as a “blue state”. Yet its at #14. We are just superior beings I suppose.
MA sucks to drive in. They have all these stupid donut-shaped circle intersections.

Referring to #1 Please explain how “density of population” has any relationship to low scores on a driving intelligence test?
Please explain how results from a “driving intelligence test” conducted by a private insurance company (GMAC Insurance) using test questions that they selected by “who knows how?” and test subjects selected by “who knows by what means?” has anything to do with reality.
The CNN piece was, at best, nothing more than fluff. You might be advised to not take it too seriously. But I’m sure that you will, anyway.
#17 – Yeah, our being ranked at #14 is so superior. 70th percentile, woo-hoo… or am I yawning…

Odd, I had been led to believe that GayPatriot could speak for himself, without having to rely on his peanut gallery. I guess that my believe was mistaken.
I guess those Blue States will have to settle for having better education, less divorce, and fewer gay kids tied to fences or set on fire. Sucks to be them, huh?
The connection between bad drivers and stupid drivers certainly seems appropriate to me. When I lived in New York state, I was horrified by the terrible drivers all over the place. I was also mystified by the fact that it seemed easier to get a driver’s license in my community than it was to get a library card!
raj baby, you simply can’t admit you’re wrong. Nice try at deflecting the focus but the question remains, herr raj,
“Please explain how “density of population” has any relationship to low scores on a driving intelligence test?”
You can’t. It doesn’t. End of story. You were wrong.
