They want to start a war between nations in order to promote alliances between themselves and one side. The points really aren't self-contradictory, it's all about what is good for Al Qaida and their interests... no matter what they break in the process. As for the media... for people who believe in their holy calling and that the pen is mightier than the sword, they seem self-willfully convinced that nothing they do or say has any consequences whatsoever.
