With the release today of Superman Returns, I thought I’d give y’all a chance to chime in with your favorite superhero movie. As a child I was partial to Superman and Spider-Man comics and (Saturday morning) cartoons while enjoying the Batman TV show.
Perhaps it’s because I was so partial to Spider-Man as a child that I thoroughly enjoyed the Spider-Man movies, particularly the second one — which I blogged about here. And while I think very highly of the first two X-Men movies, particularly the second, I would have to say Spider-Man 2 is my favorite superhero movie.
Even as I say this, so many wonderful superhero movies come to mind, including the first two Christopher Reeve–Superman movies and last year’s Batman Begins. Now, it’s your turn. What’s your favorite superhero movie?
UPDATE: In comment #7, Lynda suggests that “the more interesting question is worst superhero movie ever made.” Hmm. . . So, if you want to chime in with your least favorite superhero flick, please feel free to do that as well.
Buckaroo Banzai.
Superman I and II are sacred cows for me. So I will be going to this new Superman moview with a bit of concern as I hate it when people mess with my sacred cows. Though the buzz has been very good. Here’s hoping.
John
Does the Incredibles count?
I really liked Spiderman II, and the original Superman movies came out when I was a kid, so both of those hold fond memories for me.
Since I’m making the rules, I’ve decided that the Incredibles counts.
I would agree with Just Me……The Incredibles.
1. Superman I (w/Christopher Reeve)
2. Spider-Man II
3. The Incredibles
4. Superman II (A warning against marriage; marriage = loss of powers!)
5. Batman Begins
6. Batman (Tim Burton’s)
7. Hulk (I think I’m the only person who liked it)
8. X-Men
9. Spider-Man
10. Hellboy
Since the question is favorite, and not best, I’d have to say the 1966 Batman. Adam West is a god. But I think the more interesting question is worst superhero movie ever made. Lots more choices, but I’m thinking Catwoman would get that honor. Happy Dan?
I’m always happy when you comment, Lynda. š
Favorite Movie Superhero?
Well, that has to be Margo Channing (along with her trusty side kick, Karen) who battle the Machiavellian Eve Harrington and her evil, toady sidekick, Addison De Witt, using cigarettes, martiniās and verbal daggers in a battle of wits and words in the backstabbing world of Broadway theater.
Vera gets excited just thinking about the enemies of theater Margo and Karen could go after!
What Vera wouldnāt give to be a member of the Sarah Siddons Society and attend their annual catfight, I mean, banquet.
In no particular order:
The Incredibles
Batman Begins
X-Men
X-Men II
X-Men III
Spiderman II
Superman
Superman Returns
Daredevil (Am I the only one who liked it?)
Batman I and II(directed by Tim Burton)
Oh, and for the ānon-thespiansā on the board, the movie is called āAll About Eveā.
//more gin, Ricardoā¦
The Incredibles!
In no particular order:
Spawn,
Blade (I &II not so much III),
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Of course add your obvious ones:
Batman I and Batman Begins,
Superman I&II,
Everything Spidey.
I liked League of Extraordinary Gentlemen too.
Lynda-when I was a kid I loved the Old Batman series. I don’t recall, but my sister remembers I made the whole family wait until Batman was over before we could go out for her Birthday dinner one year. I can remember playing house with my friends I would pretend to be Mrs. Batman (for some reason I didn’t want to be Mrs. West).
For me:
Spiderman and Incredibles in a tie for movies
Kato in the Green Hornet for TV sloptime
Beowulf as a superhero in literature
My partner as a real life superhero
Matt, you know I’m a huge fan of Beowulf, don’t you?
I did my own translation — and even wrote a screenplay adaptation.
Worst Suprhero Movie: AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. SuperGore will never conquer Manbearpig!
# 6 has my list… Almost!
I would throw out the The Hulk (well meaninng film, just didn’t work) and put at the top M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable”, a superb and origional super hero yarn, and his best work to date IMO. And “X-2” would replace “Hellboy” though I liked that one too.
Oh, and one more. “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker”. Though it is animated and never played in the theaters, “BB:ROTJ”, along with most of the DC / Warner Bros. Super Hero animation produced in the last ten years puts most of the live action movies to shame. Why? The writing and story lines are leaps and bounds better than most of the unimaginative Hollywood schlock passing as scripts and storylines. Goodle the name Bruce Timm and that will lead you to a lot of the good stuff.
I actually enjoyed “Supergirl” with Helen Slater and Faye Dunaway strictly for its EXTREME camp. Of course, Faye looked like she still hadn’t shaken off “Mommie Dearest” when portraying a villainess. The most underrated actress? Brenda Vaccarro as Faye’s sidekick. Her lines were the best!
Regards,
Peter H.
Dan at #16 re: Beowulf translation? Nope, I didn’t know that about you; quite an accomplishment on your part. And a screenplay, too? I enjoyed the ’05 Beowulf & Grendel film; it’s a great film. Wow, a translation of Beowulf; damn, that’s good.
Christopher Reeve’s first Superman.
X-Men is high up there. Don’t know if King Kong qualifies as a super-hero, but he’s my favorite. I really liked the newest version – broke my heart when he fell from the Empire State building.
Bluntman & Chronic
I’ll have to think up more and get back to ya.
How about Team America?
I liked
Batman
Batman Begins
Spiderman
1 & 2 (3 looks pretty cool)
Fantastic Four was kinda cool, but then anything with Michael Chickles(Sp?)
Superman
Blade
Haven’t seen Hulk
And of course who can forget the Ambiguously Gay Duo?
One more.
Worst:
Leonard Part IV
Some parts were funny, but overall, a lousy movie.
Mango Me!
Oh yeah. For some reason, when I was a kid, I loved The Greatest American Hero.
Ooops! (promise this is my last one)
Should have been Leonard Part VI
I will NEVER forget that winter night in ’78 when my dad fought through the evilest of ice storms to take me & my little brother to the Chicago premier of Superman.
As the opening credits rolled, I remember sitting there in my seat, crying like a baby, because I was certain I was seeing the most wondrous movie ever made.
I’m now far too old for such nonsense, so as I sat in the darkened theatre late Tuesday night (attended the midnight preview here in L.A., you see), I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself carried back to that cold and magical night back in 1978. The tears were just as plentiful and every bit as welcome.
The new Superman, in my opinion, is every bit as wondrous as the original. Maybe a little slow to get started, but once it hits the accelerator, it never lets up. Wonderful film. Simply wonderful.

I can’t believe no one has yet listed Mystery Men among the worst ever.
I have a strange, warm, fuzzy spot for Mystery Men…
and the movie was OK too!
Mystery Men is one of my favorite movies.
Oh, and as for shittiest superhero movies…
Does Howard the Duck count? š

I kind of enjoyed Mystery Men; it had an odd kind of bad movie appeal like Mars Attacks.
Mystery Men would be the worst ever . . . except I’ll never ever get over Geoffrey Rush in that film. His performance is so awful, so over the top, so campy, so entirely miscast, that I cannot help but laugh every time he’s on screen.
Looks like the Malcontent boys agree on Mystery Men!
I have to go with the first Batman (Tim Burton). It was so deliciously dark. I also liked the X-Men movies and Superman. I’m one of the only people I know who disliked both Spiderman movies.
I am terribly embarassed to admit that there is a scene in Spider-man 2 that almost made me cry. It’s where he rescues the train and is then himself rescued by the passengers as he passes out from exertion and is about to fall into the lake. I choked the tears back… barely. Great movie.
God, I’m so cheesy.
I am a comic book fan. I have written movie scripts
I am looking forward to Green Lantern movie
excelsior!
Dude I totally go for Spawn and Ironman, by the way I’m real excited for its live action debut next year
