Howdy from the Canadian Rockies!

July 11, 2006 by Bruce Carroll

Hey pardners… this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to test to see if I can get wireless access from our vacation at the dude ranch in Canada.  It works!

We’ve had a great time since leaving Charlotte, NC last Thursday.  This past weekend was spent at the Calgary Stampede.   Awesome!  It was on our “must do” list before, and now it is at the top of our “must return” list.  The weekend was full of country music, carnival food, rodeo events and cowboys!

We have just barely started our week at a wonderful dude ranch in British Columbia after a glorious drive from Calgary on Sunday.   Already we’ve taken a number of rides with our horses (mine is “Thumper”, PatriotPartner’s is “Roanie”) through the foothills of the Rockies.  Absolutely gorgeous scenery and I’ve experienced my first “in person” hail storm under a canopy of trees on the back of a rushing mountain river.

I’m not sure how much blogging will be done before we return to civilization on Monday.  We have definitely notched down our technology…. so I can’t post photos until I return.

I hope everyone is having a great week and a wonderful summer so far.

It’s good to hear you’re having such a good time. I spend a week every August escaping the Texas heat in the Yoho Park area which I suspect is close to where you are now. If so I recommend the following sights.

Moraine Lake (near Lake Louise) rent a canoe and paddle on this truly remarkable lake. It’s abot a mile x 1/2 mile, many shades of blue and completely surrounded by high peaks and glaciers.

Float trip down the Kicking Horse river. The Lower section is the best.

Golf at the Golden, BC Country Club. If you play, it is a sublime experience with several holes on the Columbia River and great mountain views in every direction. Plus you can invoke the local “bear rule”. If a bear has been sighted, a common occurance, you can replace any ball hit in the woods in the fairway with no penalty.

Takakkaw Falls. In Yoho Park, over 1200 feet high and you can actually climb under them if you are brave enough.

    Enjoy the Canadian vacation!

On your way back, stop by New Hampshire and say ‘hi’ to the people in the Free State Project.
