I’ve been trying to resist posting on this, but I just can’t… my apologies.
I guess my “gaydar” is bad when it comes to “boy bands” because I was personally surprised to hear Lance Bass is gay. And it sounds like one of the “worst kept secret” in Hollywood.
Of course I was even more shocked to hear that his boyfriend is Reichen Lehmkuhl. (Way to go, Lance! Thumbs up!)
Anyway, I think is is pretty cool that Lance came out — in a place and time of his choosing. I’m glad to see his network of friends are supporting him…
Justin Timberlake says his former ‘N Sync bandmate Lance Bass, who has revealed that he’s gay, has his support.
“Lance is one of my great friends,” Timberlake said in a statement issued by his rep, Ken Sunshine, and reported Thursday by People.com. “I support him and wish him all the happiness in the world.”
Another former ‘N Sync-er, Joey Fatone, told People: “He took years to really think about how he was going to tell everyone. I back him up 100 percent.” Bass and Fatone are developing a sitcom pilot inspired by “The Odd Couple.”
I’m also glad to see that Lance didn’t see a need to get all political with his coming out and that overall this doesn’t seem to be a big deal.
And now, I guess he can publicly be one of Kathy Griffin’s “Gays”.
Access Hollywood reported Thursday that Lance’s announcement was, obviously, old news to friend Kathy Griffin.
“I’ve known that Lance was gay forever, it’s no big deal,” Griffin said. “He had really been hounded quite a bit and, you know, he’s in a relationship and he wanted to be able to go hang out with this person and not be running from bloggers.”
How about that….. there were bloggers threatening to out Lance because he is gay and they had no regard for his privacy or impact they would have on his friends and family. Why does this sound sooooooo familiar?
I guess I’m really most shocked about Lance because, as Vera Charles might say, “Gays don’t do outer space.”

Gay astronauts? Not in those outfits!
You’d look like the Michelin Man after an all you can eat buffet!
As for Lance: Well, Vera’s not shocked. How could she be? Vera has such sensitive and highly acute ‘gay-dar’ that she can spot a gay man at 60 paces in the dark. Without her glasses.
Good for Lance for not being threatened by some deranged group of bloggers with too much free time and no respect for someone’s privacy.
They make a lovely couple. The punk and the hunk.
(Vera’s was ‘the drunk with the hunk’)
He was always my wife’s favorite in that group.
She has a weak spot for NSync because, gorramit, they can really sing well. I can guess I can stop being jealous of him now, though.
Although I do find it almost disturbing that I am a flaming heterosexual, and I agree with your assessment of his boyfriend.
I admit I have absolutely no gaydar-unless a person is an absolute stereotype of the flaming homosexual, I am going to be clueless.
I didn’t really have a clue who Lance was (boy bands aren’t exactly my thing and never have been)-somebody had to tell me.
That said-I think it sucks when people out gay people who aren’t ready to be out yet, so it is nice that he got to out himself when he was ready.
I’m glad he was able to come out on his own terms. And his boyfriend is ridiculously gorgeous. Seriously, why can’t I find a straight single man like that?
It would be nice if Lance Bass had outed himself voluntarily, but it’s not entirely clear whether or not he did. Apparently, some internet gossip monger–no, not Mike Rogers, “PerezHilton”–was spreading innuendos for a few days before Bass outed himself.
It’s nice that he’s found himself a companion in Lehmkuhl, but it should be remembered that Lehmkuhl first came to fame as being the boyfriend of another gay man on the irreality series Amazing Race. After they won the amazing race, they even made a cover on the Advocate. Shortly thereafter, they separated. The Lehmkuhl/Bass relationship might last, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
Lance Bass “coming out” of the closet. Now THAT’S funny. Honey, you were never in.
Raj is right that he was hounded out of the closet by Perez Hilton, who does seem to specialize in trying to determine the sexuality of many celebrities. I wish him well too, although I would not pick a china pattern with RL just yet.
As for being surprised, no I am not. He did handle the matter with more dignity and courage than most of his peers have over the years, so he deserves some credit.
And that deficient gaydar ends up getting false positives on flaming straights. This has been a problem for me in the past.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to troll on Religious Right sites that I expect are bemoaning his guest appearances on 7th Heaven. Good times.
I can’t believe lance is gay. For all the years I thought he wasn’t gay. I also can’t I believe that he has a boyfriend name Reichen Lehmkuhl, I’m shocked .I don’t know if he is a christian or not. But if lance wasn’t gay I will like him and he would had a girlfriend.
Never heard of him. And would somebody please explain the point of Kathy Griffin, or why anybody thinks she’s funny?
Lance is a lucky guy in a lot of ways… the support in coming out, the choice in mates… the success & glory of being in a once famous boy band now slowly forgotten as it fades into irrelevancy.
I only wish Hillary Clinton could muster the courage and do the same… she’d have all that support of the female Senators IF she got honest and came out… she’s had some success (just look at what her 2000 yard sale of stolen WH furniture netted her)… and she certainly is on the way to irrelevancy.
Come on Hillary, come out
