GayPatriot Mailbag

August 19, 2006 by GayPatriot

This is the kind of email that makes me get up in the morning and blog….

Hey man. I’m Mike, 32, living in the upper Midwest. I have my masters in social work and am a case manager and therapist at an AIDS resource center. I wanted to let you know that I really appreciate the tenor and class you bring to the table. I am a liberal and I have some conservative friends, both gay and straight. I think the only way we solve things is by talking to each other in a respectful way. I fully agree with the idea that we cannot marginalize anyone that does not follow a party line. Keep doing what your doing. We can disagree about things forever and still respect and care for each other.

Thanks Mike.  We are here to bring new ideas and new perspectives to the blogosphere and try to do it with thought, humor and class.   We don’t always succeed, but we do always try.

Perhaps the owners of this site can take his advice and stop name-calling in their posts if they really believe Micke’s letter.

kevin, perhaps you should re-examine what you perceive as name calling in the posts. As he says in hie email ” I wanted to let you know that I really appreciate the tenor and class you bring to the table.” Apparently Mike has seen something that you have missed.

    What a charming young man!

    And only 32, you say?

    With a masters?

    Hmmmm.

Pity he’s in the upper Midwest –

    Does he ever travel east?

Would he enjoy the company of a mature, witty, classy older woman?

    Does he like martinis?

2: Name calling doesn’t bring class to anything.

if it weren’t for name calling you would not know the meaning of civil discourse

name calling is not civil discourse – it’s like the old monty python sketch about arguements….the guy comes in for an argument, but the guy selling just counters with “no it isn’t”. civil discourse is just what its name implies: the presentation of opposite sides of a point of view with the reasonings for supporting or not supporting those points of view. The dicourse ceases to be civil when you attack people on a personal level and name calling is included. When you start a topic and you decide to put in name calling (like madliberaldemocrat) you not only present that you your point of view, but in your mind you’ve already branded the opposite side as unworthy of even being entitled to their point of view. Look at “fair and balanced” Bill O’Reilly; it’s not civil discourse when you tell your opponent to shut up and order “turn off their mic”.

    Kevin,

How is OReilly’s stunt any different from what the GayLeft has done for years to conservative or GOP gays? How is that different from how the gay community treats its members when issues like personal responsibility are raised and a conservative gay suggests “victimhood” is not a right in our community?

For you to lecture anyone on civil discourse –with all the games you play (Bush hasn’t caught Osama, yet… etc)– bends credulity into a pretzel and toasts it to a crisp.

What constitutes civil discourse from your perspective is towing the Democratic Party’s GayLeft fringe talking points. Like OReilly is fond of saying: put down the KoolAid Kevin, get serious, join the debate.

Matt, who from the GayLeft has done this?

“…GayLeft has done for years to conservative or GOP gays.”
