The Anchoress Stands by Her Man (and Mine) for ‘08
I was delighted to learn (via Instapundit) that one of my favorite bloggers stands by her man (and mine) for the 2008 GOP nomination for president of the United States. While the Anchoress doesn’t think Rudy Giuliani is the “perfect man” for the job, she, like me, trusts him “to carry forth the war on terror as it needs to be carried.” And on another key issue, she trusts him to appoint “strict constitutionalist SCOTUS judges.“
While I very much enjoy the Anchoress’s blog, I disagree with her on a number of issues. I like her because she always constructs thoughtful arguments and does so again in this piece defending her support for the former Mayor of the Big Apple. She believes he has the skills and character to lead our nation at this difficult time. So make sure to read her post; she makes a great case for a good man.

Not to throw water on anyone’s parade, but I do get the feeling that lots of us (including myself) are doing some “projecting” about Rudy these days.
You know, kind of like when you’re on those first few dates with someone and they seem perfect and wonderful and compatible, simply because you haven’t had time yet to get to the stuff where they aren’t.
Rudy may be interesting and capable and pro-American, but – just like George W. Bush – Rudy is no small-government, Reagan conservative. Nor do we really have any idea what he’ll do in the GWOT, yet.
Aside – Dan – small suggestion here that you limit yourself to one use of “a good man” or “that good man” per post. Praising people you admire is great – just asking for a touch more variety

Good point about my use of “good man,” Calarato. So, I fixed it.

As of now, Rudy is a great candidate, but we have 2 more years to go until the first presidential debate…and that is a virtual lifetime in geopolitics.
The final act of 2008 has yet to be written.

I confess myself uncomfortable with Giuliani’s positions on gun control and partial birth abortion. He is preferable to McCain, but only just barely. I am accustomed to dealing with the fact that GOP candidates will be terrible on at least some issues. Bush is godawful on spending, immigration, and merely awful on several other issues. I realize that compromises have to be made, but there are some things I have difficulty compromising on, and among these are the First Amendment (which McCain holds in utter contempt), the Second Amendment (which Giuliani is no fan of), and killing babies by vacuuming out their brains (which Giuliani supports).
Am I alone in feeling that if my 2008 choice is “Who sucks less: McCain or Giuliani?” that that is a very discouraging choice indeed. If I have to vote for a president who wants to raise taxes (McCain), appoint judges that will undermine the 2nd amendment (Giuliani), support prtial birth abortion (Giuliani), and screw the military (McCain)… then, why not just stay home and let Hillary win?
