The point of GC is to define what honorable combatants are, then establish RECIPROCAL rules of humane POW, etc. treatment BETWEEN two (2) such combatants.

For terrorists to merit GC treatment, they would have to (1) cease and desist from being terrorists, (2) form a government, (3) sign the GC, and (4) have every real intention of honoring the GC. In short: They don’t merit it.

We may choose to give GC treatment to them nonetheless… but that’s our choice. It’s not anything the terrorists deserve. And yes, the fact that we would consider treating them very humanely indeed even though they don’t deserve it at all, does show we are civilized – Thank you for finally noticing.

As I watched his speech today, I saw something I didn’t think would be possible in America: A sitting President of the United States stood up and threatened the Congress to pass his legilsation to allow our agents to legally commit torture under some sort of vague threat against the House and the Senate. Isn’t one of the points of the Geneva conventions to show that we are more civilized than the terrorists who have harmed us? Additionally, these terrorists have shown themselves to be trained to die for their hideous beliefs – will torturing them really make a difference, or will it just allow our anger to flow more freely in a futile grasp at revenge?
