The MSM “Divining Stick” for 2008
In a piece noting the Boston Globe’s biased coverage of outgoing Massachusetts Governor (and 2008 GOP presidential hopeful) Mitt Romney, Hugh Hewitt writes:
Negative MSM coverage of Republican candidates is like a divining stick pointing towards those Republicans the Democratic Party fears the most.
Hugh notes that one reason “Rudy Giuliani has credibility with [the] base despite his views on abortions rights etc is that the MSM clearly fears him.” Now just read the whole thing!

Missing from this contradictory post is evidence that 1.) the “MSM” fears Giuliani and, more importantly, 2.) the negative coverage of Giuliani that supposedly proves that the monolithic monstrous “MSM” fears him.
And is Hugh Hewitt actually claiming that the base takes its cues from the “MSM”? “One of the reasons that Senator McCain is viewed with such distrust by the Republican base is the fawning coverage he receives from the Beltway-Manahattan media elites.” And damn those cities–NYC and DC!! Who do those people think they are anyway? (It is nice to see that some people are getting back to their NYC and DC bashing…the same cities attacked by their distant theocratic cousins.)

Why is it biased to question Romney’s consistency over the years? He’s clearly flip-flopped on abortion and gay rights and doesn’t have a good explanation for doing so other than his obvious hope that he can now appeal to the GOP base. Many in that base are not that comfortable with his being a Mormon to begin with and his flip-flopping doesn’t help.
As for Rudy, I just don’t see how you can be so certain that the GOP base is going to accept another faux conservative like Bush. Rush I suspect doesn’t think that would be a good idea.
In any event, core ideology is liable to matter little in 2008. Bush seems intent on escalating the Iraq war with more troops – in effect, calling McCain’s bluff – and when escalation fails, so too will McCain’s Presidential bid. In fact, the failed war’s suction will pull in and drown the Presidential aspirations of all those – Dem and Repub alike – who continue to tether themselves to it. It seems to me that the GOP is going to have to look outside Washington for a bona fide conservative Presidential candidate who is not tainted by the Iraq fiasco.

are you suggesting that Bush is going to purposely set up 30,000+ new troops to fail so he can bring down McCain in the process?
i just don’t see that happening. isn’t it more logical that he wants them to succeed and McCain will gain a huge edge having been the only voice of support?

Romney is a Massachusetts conservative (i.e. a socialist). He is conservative only on areas that alienate non religious right-wingers like myself and leftist on areas that alienate conservatives. Worst of both worlds. Rudy has hero status due to his 9-11 performance and a track record of success. I hope he and Gingrich (who has innovative ideas but pisses off the socialists) could form a single ticket. Gingrich would be a great V.P. if he could accept the second fiddle position. In my dream world they would be elected and send Rumsfeld to the UN just to cheese them all and make Bolton the U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela to give Hugo a stroke. Or vice versa.
