Our final poll this week for Grande Conservative Blogress Diva has spurred me to re-visit four of my already favorite bloggers. Michelle Malkin never fails to disappoint me with stories I don’t see (or hear) anywhere else.
Putting Freedom Above Football – Michelle Malkin/Baltimore Sun
There were signs. They were small signs, but they were there, and they suggested that Maryland guard Donnie Woods was serious about quitting football to defend his country.
An American flag hung from his locker, and he kept another in his room. Favorite movies? United 93 and World Trade Center. The hunter green camouflage Terps football hat he always wore. His criminal justice major.
Nobody, though – not even his parents – expected Woods to forgo his senior season of football to join the military or pursue a career in a police department with the hopes of eventually landing a job with the FBI or CIA.
“He sort of threw the idea out and we said, ‘Yeah, OK, sure Donnie, whatever,’ ” said his father, Don.
Said Terps center Edwin Williams: “He talked about it during the season, but nobody really listened to it.”
They’re listening now.
Woods, one of the Terps’ top offensive linemen, has contacted military recruiters, and the Montgomery County Police Department has contacted Woods. He will play the last football game of his college career Friday against Purdue in the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Fla. It was a decision he secretly made before the start of the season – while daydreaming one day in a summer class – and one he said he will not regret.
“I always wanted to serve my country,” said Woods, who will turn 23 on Jan. 27. “I think freedom is an amazing thing. I love what this country stands for. I want to give back for what we have. There’s no other high for me.”
Another American hero…. doing the jobs American liberals will not.

“Another American hero…. doing the jobs American liberals will not”
Yeah. Good one man.
Of course, its a LIE to say there are not blue staters and liberals in the mil.
But facts never stopped you before…
So why should they now…
Of course if Woods ever dares to question the competence of the GOP leadership no doubt NDT will lead the charge calling him pre-9-11 non-American traitor, as he did with Pat Tillman’s brother (and veteran) awhile back.
Its amazing how quickly heroes turn into villains when fanaticism rules the day.
That’s such a bunch of BS.
My brother is more liberal than I am and he works for the United States Secret Service, protecting our currency from our enemies. And that’s a very important job. Cause if the dollars in our wallets are worthless because our enemies can counterfeit our currency at will, then we’d have no capital to spend to fight a war in the first place.
Of course if Woods ever dares to question the competence of the GOP leadership no doubt NDT will lead the charge calling him pre-9-11 non-American traitor, as he did with Pat Tillman’s brother (and veteran) awhile back.
Actually, this is what I said, Gryph. What’s burning your biscuits is that I pointed out that Benedict Arnold, like Pat Tillman’s brother, was also a decorated war hero.
And then I stated what the real problem with you and Tillman is:
Benedict Arnold actually made a rational plan and decision to be a traitor.
I don’t think either you or Tillman can be ascribed that much rationality, or even a conscious motivation to be traitorous.
What I think is that both of you are irrational Bush-haters who are so obsessed with striking out at and hurting Bush that you don’t even realize how traitorous you’re being.
Criticism is one thing, Gryph. But intelligent dissent involves recognizing when someone is right as well as when someone is wrong, and neither you or Tillman have demonstrated the capacity to do so. It’s all anti-Bush, all the time.
And that lines you up nicely with Sheehan and her crew.
Again, it has nothing to do with whether or not one criticizes. It has everything to do with whether or not one can be objective in their criticism. You and Tillman are both obsessed with denigrating Republicans and the Bush administration, and as such, cannot possibly be said to be objective.
My brother is more liberal than I am and he works for the United States Secret Service, protecting our currency from our enemies.
Right. That’s why you, he, and the rest of the Democratic Party are so opposed to taking action against the country that seems to have devoted the lion’s share of resources to doing it; North Korea.
I love Chases’ variation of “My dad can beat up your dad.” Or in this case, “My brother is a very important person, so nyah nyah nyah.”
How typically schoolyard.
#7. Heather, you run the school yard with the lady from Dallas, so what are you complaining about?
#5 – NDT, I enjoyed your link to the debate with Gryph 2 months ago. Did he get hammered in that one! ROFL 🙂
LOL…..you know, V the K, I never saw you as a “Heather”. You’ve always been more of an “Estelle” or “Margaret” type in my mind.
You have to wonder why Sean feels the need to refer to us as “ladies”, though. Think it’s because he’s trying to insult us, to get under our skin by questioning our manhood?
Umm… like his insults should matter?
And you of course, NDT, are the height of objectivity. Really. I’ll note that you say Tilman is “obsessed with denigrating Republicans…”, when in fact if you actually read what he said he doesn’t mention the GOP or Bush at all. You are but one of the many obsessive fanatics around here NDT.
http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/200601019_after_pats_birthday/
The GOP has not made N Korea a top priorty either NDT. Re-elections campaigns to run you know. For all the good that it did them.
The pot once again projects its monochromatic quality onto the kettle.
LOL….right, Gryph. That’s why he repeats all the lies and smears of the left against Republicans and Bush, then demands that people go out and vote against them.
Then you notice something else.
For instance, he whines about how awful IEDs are…..but has nothing to say about Democrats like Cindy Sheehan who give hundreds of thousands of dollars to insurgents — oops, “freedom fighters” — so they can buy them.
He complains about how the United States was allegedly “subverting international law and humanity”…..but has nothing to say about Saddam’s or the Taliban’s unspeakable brutality, or how Democrats like Howard Dean say that putting an end to it was “unnecessary” and “unjustified”.
He whines about stealing “courage, honor, and virtue”…..but has nothing to say about ohn Kerry calling him and his brethren “stupid”, or Democratic leftists wishing for a “million Mogadishus” against him and his fellow troops, or the spitting upon him by Nancy Pelosi Democrats like Gerardo Sandoval, who says the United States doesn’t need a military and spits upon icons like the Iowa, and other leftist Democrats who denigrate the ROTC programs with which he allegedly has some familiarity as warmongering and destructive to intellect.
Instead, all he does is obsessively repeat lies and smears against Republicans and the Bush administration.
I wondered how long your hatred for Bush would be held in check by your respect for things like the Iowa, Gryph. But as it seems, both you and Tillman are willing to cover anything up for your Democratic masters as long as it allows you to hate Bush.
Damn, ND30, you are on a frickin’ ROLL here! Try not to embarrass these chicks too much….
Regards,
Peter H.
NDT, you are so full of it. Just because I think that Bush is a bad President, doesn’t mean I hate him. Yes, i’ve identified myself jokingly as such, but really, do you honestly think I stay up late at night thinking about how angry I am Bush? Nope. Not worth the time or effort.
But you know NDT, what I do think is that you, Bruce and the rest are not “Patriots” in the sense that your allegience is to America first.
It is the GOP that is your God, your Savior, and the altar upon which you are willing to sacrifice anyone or anything. Thats why its so easy for you to transform yesterdays Hero, into today’s Villian. And there are no actions you won’t defend so long as your high priest tells you its for the cause, whatever that is at the moment.
You would have no problem with burning the Constitution so long as the GOP said it was the right thing to do.
The bottom line is that you and Bruce don’t believe in the GOP so much because you think that they are the best political party. You believe in the GOP because you need to. As if it were a religion.
The fundamentalist mindset and fanaticism and the absolute black and white worldview give you comfort. You need to believe that you are always on the right side. But of course, for you to be the Hero, then there has to be a Villian. So create a bogeyman call “the Left”, and put anyone that questions the GOP, into that role. Just as someone like Cindy Sheehan does with her portrayl of the Right. In this you are exactly the same as her. Exactly.
The GOP and Bush truly could do no evil that you won’t instantly excuse or forgive. Actually you usually could ever admit that they have done something wrong in the first place. So you define “wrong” as “right”, in your head.
You have to do this. Because if you admitted that it was even possible that your side is skating on moral thin ice then the very foundation of your world trembles. And a world where the GOP does not own and define the moral compass terrifies you. So you scratch out “North” on your compass dial and replace it with “South” when ever necesary to give you comfort.
I don’t really understand why someone would devot such moral authority in their own lives to a political Party or a politician of any stripe. But it seems to have replaced the traditional role of a Church in your lives. But then I don’t understand why people watch American Idol either.

Gryph must want to exempt me here, since he KNOWS from previous encounters that:
(1) I don’t care about the GOP or any party. (Gave up after spending 15+ years with the Democrats first.)
(2) I am an Independent, and only give money to independent political groups (if at all).
(3) I’m quite happy to slam Bush on important issues. (MPA. Spending. Failure to cut taxes more. Crucial lack of leadership in the GWOT; failure to name our real enemy. Immigration.)
Come to think of it, the same is true of V. So Gryph must be intending to exempt V.
Come to think of it, point (3) applies in varying ways to Bruce, Dan, Nick, John (the 4 designated GPs), Michigan-Matt, NDT, etc. That leaves…. ? Hmm, looks like somebody has a persecution complex.
Or maybe that Gryph “projection” thing is operating here. Check this out:
Guys… Seriously, who does that remind you of? LOL 🙂
Gryph, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. As you keep pushing your slander that our CIA interrogators and military servicepeople are “torturers”, you are not only on thin ice morally, you have broken it and sunk. Check yourself. Take the chip off your shoulder so you can look in the mirror.
(And for the record: I do part with NDT where he seems to make an opposite argument on the torture issue, that it is conceivably OK in special circumstances. It isn’t. It consists of inflicting pain/injury for the sake of power, humiliation or punishment. Good ends, such as medical treatment or preventing mass murder, are excluded by definition. President Bush has the right position. President Bush said in 9/2006, “The United States does not torture. It’s against our laws, and it’s against our values. I have not authorized it – and I will not authorize it. Last year, my administration worked with Senator John McCain, and I signed into law the Detainee Treatment Act, which established the legal standard for treatment of detainees wherever they are held.”)
Thats why its so easy for you to transform yesterdays Hero, into today’s Villian.
Actually, what does the heavy lifting in that case is when “yesterday’s hero” throws in his lot with all the people I’ve mentioned who not only denigrate and bash our troops here in the United States, but issue calls to terrorists worldwide to kill them AND send those terrorists money and support to do it.
Just because I think that Bush is a bad President, doesn’t mean I hate him. Yes, i’ve identified myself jokingly as such, but really, do you honestly think I stay up late at night thinking about how angry I am Bush?
I’m not really sure you stay up late at night to do it; however, as your posts show here, you certainly devote the majority portion of your day to doing it.
And that really is the point, Gryph. You have no idea how ironic I find your posts, which demonstrate again and again that, when given the opportunity to condemn Democratic-endorsed traitors like Cindy Sheehan, you bash Bush.
Hmmmm…interesting that my first post and my re-post have been deleted. The first one was deleted for violating erms of conduct and the second didn’t even appear.
My question very simply asked why is that the supporters of this site are not in military service in Iraq themselves. Not only do people here support our presence in Iraq, there are frequent attacks on liberals when commending “heroes doing the job that American liberals will not”. I think it’s a pretty fair question that should be answered.
[GP Ed. Note – Because — for the 1,000,000th time — gays cannot serve in the military thanks to the Gay Messiah, Bill Clinton. Get over it, Kevin. Why aren’t YOU serving? I would if I could.]
Also: The military is very selective. Only one-twentieth of one percent of Americans (or, 1 in 2000) get to be in Iraq.
Kevin – Let’s ask some other relevant questions, shall we?
— Do you support the War on Poverty? If so: have you devoted your life to helping inner-city black youth?
— Did you support Clinton’s action in Kosovo? If so: are you writing us from your service in Kosovo as you speak?
— Hoping that I’m not confusing you with a different commentor: Have you yet thanked your military brother for his service? (Not “prayed for him”…but thanked him to his face?)
My question very simply asked why is that the supporters of this site are not in military service in Iraq themselves.
Mhm. And, since you leftists allegedly support the war in Afghanistan, why aren’t YOU there?
I mean, think about it. Given all the leftists in the world who are whining about Darfur and Somalia, you’d think they could form a sizeable army themselves and go to work to eliminate the problem. But that would require actually doing something that might result in their injury.
22: and by the way, why not check the number of members of our military who are there because they’re avoiding jail time?
Let the record show that I answered your question… while you evaded mine.
