Given that there has been some slight warming the last 200 years… And given that people are so worried about it…

Why aren’t the environmentalists proposing a small orbital heat reflector?

We have the technology. It wouldn’t have to “blot out the sun”; it would only need to reflect maybe 0.01% of sunlight to make just the right difference. Something maybe 50 x 50 km ought to do it. Its orbit would be designed so no one on Earth is “discriminated against”. The Sun would dwarf it, so that people literally would not notice the few minutes they were directly under it. The cost would be maybe several billion $; in other words, hundreds of times less than the trillions Kyoto is expected to cost the world economy.

But, we’re not discussing it. Even though it would bring temperatures back to historical averages within a year of its completion, Global Warming nuts aren’t proposing it. All they care about is Kyoto. In other words: the method of Kyoto – costing the world trillions, setting back global development and punishing the United States – is far more important to them than solving global warming (or the perceived problem thereof).

- The feared disaster is that the Earth will get dramatically WARMER – melting the polar icecaps and permafrost.

- Somehow, in a way never explained, that will destroy all seed stocks.

- “Solution”: Massively violate the polar icecaps with a huge seed-storage facility, where the disappearing permafrost will be completely unable to protect the seeds from global warming, once the disaster strikes.

Oh-kay………………..

Nutty though this is, it’s actually less nutty then the usual econuts demands to commit the USA to economic suicide in order to fight Manbearpig. Making plans to deal with a warmer planet on practical terms is a more rational response than moralizing about SUV’s.

Jonah Goldberg makes a good point:.

Earth got about 0.7 degrees Celsius warmer in the 20th century while it increased its GDP by 1,800 percent, by one estimate… That’s still an amazing bargain. Literacy, medicine, leisure and even, in many respects, the environment have improved mightily over the course of the 20th century, at least in the prosperous West. Given the option of getting another 1,800 percent richer in exchange for another 0.7 degrees warmer, I’d take the heat in a heartbeat.
