Then, on rare occasions, Ann Coulter shows her ugliness by referring to Muslims as “ragheads” or to gays as “faggots”. Which top rightly bloggers and politicians denounce her? Answer: many of them.

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzt! Lie. Fact: There was many a drive-by comment praying for Johnson’s speedy recover. The conservative blogs went out of their way to wish Johnson well. (You don’t read much, do you JAQ?)

All one has to do is go to the Technorati search on the right hand column of this blog and type in Hitler… I have no doubt you will see commenters from your ilk (maybe even yourselves!) who have equated Bush with Hitler… or made some other outrageous hyperbolic lie about the current President.

Or… go to an anti-war demonstration where Cindy Sheehan and those who pray at her altar are present.

Or watch Keith Olbermann.

Or listen to Howard Dean.

Kudos to the Republican candidates for speaking out.

Now when will those on the Left apologize for calling our President “Hitler” and wishing our Vice President were dead?

I can show you where a movie was made depicting the assassination of Bush.

I can show you a book on how to assassinate Bush.

If one bothers, you can find the recorded comments of the liberals on the Huffington Compost who wished AQ had succeeded.

I can show you where Trent Lott was punished and Chris Dodd was ignored.

I can show you where libs have called Bush “Hitler”.

Just because you’re living under a rock and/or decide it didn’t happen doesn’t mean that it didn’t.

I believe it would be a futile exercise, though. You would just cover your ears and scream “LALALALALALALA!!!!”

Now when will those on the Left apologize for calling our President “Hitler” and wishing our Vice President were dead?

Probably when we do those things.

Meanwhile, if the right is so “disgusted” by Coulter, why is it that they keep inviting her year after year after year?

I’ve not seen these “blogger” posts as you describe them. Could you be more specific as to where you’ve seen these? Can you point us to an actual source? As well, who exactly is calling Bush “Hitler?” Is it any respectable, more mainstream left blog, a fringe blog, or drive-by comments?

I think it would be an easy exercise to match comment for comment inappropriate posts by the left and the right. The right, despite the posturing, has rarely ever taken the high road in such displays. And if you’re referring to drive-by comments made on left blogs, rather than a blog posting itself, all you have to do is look at the upstanding flock of regular commentors here to see the opposite polar end of that picture.

That being said, most of the left blogs I read either ignored the Bagram incident completely, or briefly commented without the ire you allude to. Personally I do think they should have made more of an issue about the effort to protect a senior administration official especially on a mission to help keep Afganistan on the right track and reinforce ties with Pakistan, most definitely there should have been more concern about those whose lives were lost that day, but most importantly, I would have like to have seen more introspective commentary from the Vice President’s office itself. Unfortunately i was simply a “business as usual, cost of doing business” message. Should I not be disappointed at that?

But back to the “cheering” – I think when commentary is wrong, in spite of the politics behind it, respectable people will condemn it as such. I hadn’t seen any posts to that end and had I seen such from any respectable outlet, I would have made it know that I disagreed. I think most reasonable people feel likewise.

Consider the inverse – the comments “cheering” after Senator Tim Johnson suffered his brain hemmorage. There was many a drive-by comment hoping for his demise. The conservative blogs officially were neutral on the point – as reasonable people they had to be – but if he had passed away, do you think resulting posts on conservative blogs would be about bereaving the Senator himself or the providential opportunity to Republicans to continue their agenda? I have no difficulty envisioning the latter and would be hard pressed to believe the sentiment of the former.

Which leads me to point two. As reasonable people, conservative leaders have to denounce Coulter. She’s forced the GOP and conservative movements into an incredibly dicey arena as she’s known as a mouthpiece for the right. The majority of Americans, while potentially divided over specific issues in the gay community like marriage, are generally gay-friendly. Just like they’re generally minority friendly, pro-environment friendly – anything generally PC. Her previous off-the-cuff statements about President Clinton and Vice President Gore was given a pass by the right – it was just her normal sarcastic commentary on a live talk show – but the latest incident was a prepared statement, at the forefront of a national convention. The GOP and conservatives simply couldn’t let this slide without looking like assholes at the very least.

Something I learned many years ago is that you can judge a person by their actions, not their words or intentions. And while I’m very pleased to see actual official statements from conservatives and the right, the telling factor will be what they actually do in response to her derogatory speech. Will she lose gigs with Fox News? Will she be disinvited to similar events in the future? Will her books sales drop? When similar incidents happen, the left tend to respond in action – it wasn’t the right who got Dr. Laura’s TV show cancelled, it wasn’t the right that promted Mike Savage’s just signed CAA contract to be cancelled after his comments about lesbians at the Oscars, etc.

So now it comes down to this – what will these conservative and GOP leaders actually DO in response to Ann Coulter’s speech, rather than just say?

Was Coulter paid for that talk? Will she be invited again next year?

And what happened to all the people in the room that enthusiastically and warmly cheered her on?
