Outing is, in my opinion, pretty much a phony issue, cooked up by the rightwingers to maintain the closet and the status quo. any gay person who has so much stuck a toe outsdie of the deepest and darkest closet is a candidate for outing. it goes with the territory. the military does it with DADT, McCarthy did it with his list. It happens all the time to gay people. It goes with the territory. As several people have pointed out, the conservative blog outed the boy first.
I also have a lot of sympathy for the boy. Being 18 years old is synonymous with not being too bright or experienced.
All that being said, I have no sympathy for people who use the closet as their hiding place while they inflict damage on the rest of us. I have no sympathy with conservatives who attack gay people and feel that they deserve less than equal treatment, whether gay or straight, right or left wing.

Personally I agree that sexuality is someone's private buisness. But this kid is not an innocent victume being picked on. When you are part of anti-gay rallies, carry anti-gay picket signs, and support an anti-gay agenda like this specific young conservative you are open game to be called out on your hypocrasy.

#84:
So, now do I get an apology, too, for your assumptions as to my nature?

Yes, you do. I apologize for doubting that you could be capable of apologizing. ;-)

As for Whitney, I still think that if anyone "outed" young Tyler it was the conservative blog. But I truly believe the blurb was planned and had the OK from the kid: after all, he was heading to DC to enjoy Pride weekend with conservative and libertarian friends. This was just a way for him to grease the skids so to speak and ease into informing - in a matter of fact manner - his conservative friends who might not have known.

Please tell me, who among you left-wing lunatics in his community (i.e. -where he lives), took the time to sit down with him and talk to discuss with him their perception of hypocrisy about his actions? No one, of course. It's just far easier to out an 18 year old at the end of the day and call it "good."

He's the kid, those who went out of their way to trash talk him are the adults. They could have at least ACTED like adults.

Ian. I will extend a more specific apology, as it is in order. Going back and reading again, I did, indeed misread you as being harsher than you were, and I am sorry for throwing you in with the other two and for my ascription of your motives. Nobody reads, writes, or thinks absolutely clearly when he's angry.

That said, I still think that you have been acting as an apologist for the screeching, screaming "outers", trying to verbally mitigate what they did. They were wrong, period, end of story. If it's not general knowledge and it's done without the person's express permission, it's outing, period, end of story.

So, now do I get an apology, too, for your assumptions as to my nature? (I'm being slightly facetious here.)

#81 - "I’d ask for an apology for you vicious unwarranted attack but I suspect you are incapable of such a thing."

He's already apologized to you, Wonder Woman. What more do you need, a pound of flesh?

Get over yourself.

#79:
Ian, Xeno, and Jack, I still hold you in utter contempt for this

For what? All I've questioned is who actually "outed" the guy. There's considerable evidence that he was "outed" by the conservative blog that first mentioned his going to DC to attend Gay Pride with gay conservatives and libertarians. Not only that but I doubt the blog would have made the comment without it being approved by Whitney who was well along in the coming out process. Furthermore, I have consistently maintained that the guy should be left alone and given some slack.

I'd ask for an apology for you vicious unwarranted attack but I suspect you are incapable of such a thing.

I agree with Dennis Miller. He was very left-wing for a long time, then moved out of it and considers himself somewhat right-of-center (though still Independent). He said he's seen mean Right Wingers and mean Left Wingers, but- in all honesty- he's seen the meaness on the Left being more prevalant.

I apologize. I'm normally a little more cogent (or I at least try to be). Going back and reading this after calming down a bit, though, I'm not entirely disappointed in myself.

I'm still utterly disgusted by you folks who defend this behavior towards this guy. You and your associates hurt real people. You do not deserve to be debated on this point. Any position which supports or puts up any defense of hurting or trying to hurt an 18-year old this way is flat wrong.

I lost my temper and posted in the heat of that. I should not have. And I apologize to everyone in this thread, including Xeno, Jack and Ian. I normally try to avoid base insults and try to stick to real debate on real points.

My explanation (there's no excuse) is that it just cut so close to the bone on a few points. I imagined what I would have felt like if this had happened to me, as I have a leadership role.

Ian, Xeno, and Jack, I still hold you in utter contempt for this, but in the future I will try to be, to borrow my own word, a little more "couth" about it. I'm still deeply angered, but I'm not longer in a blind rage.

Again, my apologies to everyone.

You know, I don't think that I can possibly express in words the absolute rage and bottomless contempt that I have for any of you ****ers who would support this kind of attack on AN EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD. This makes me viciously, viciously angry.

This whole thing really hits me close to home. As somebody who has just been coming out within the last six months, I can't tell you how much abhorrence I have for these a**holes. I had to take time to work past instilled beliefs that I had. I had to take time to reconcile my Christian faith with my sexuality. It took years, from my self-denial in high school through trying to figure everything out in college.

I have no idea how something like this would have affected me in that process, but I am quite certain of one thing: it would not have had a positive effect, and it would not have helped me come to terms at all.

How can you do this to somebody who had to struggle with the same things you did? HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO AN EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD??? How can you even begin to defend any part of this. This is not right this is not good. This has no possibility of helping him or any other gay conservative. It's a scare tactic. It's crass bullying.

Xeno, Ian S, Jack, you are all heartless b*****ds. Go craw back under your rocks, you bunch of sleazy, uncouth, troglodytic trolls.

Anyway apparently he was mainly 'outed' by Joe Sylvester of the Conservative Dossier Blog.

A more concise version would run thusly: Treat your opponent as a friend, because that will make it easier for him to change his mind.

I heard something very wise once. (paraphrase) Always treat your opponent as a friend, because that will make things so much easier when he eventually sees the light and wishes you could be friends.

I'm not exactly Jesus when it comes to that ;-) but even so, I daresay more gays should have taken that approach to Tyler Whitney.

I see you know nothing about the YAF.

Ummm no, I know a lot more about the YAF and its origins than I would want to.

BTW, any you know what happened to Jason Wetherington after he came out to his friends, family and church? It won't surprise me that Tyler will end up with a similar outcome.

Doesn’t he have the right to do what he did just as you have the “right” to be outraged by it?

Of course he had the right to do what he did, I never stated otherwise. It doesn't make it a good thing on his part though, and I'm sure he realizes it by now.

Like I've stated before, I don't hold a grudge against him. I wish him a happy Pride, and encourage him in participating in the festivities openly. That alone makes a great contribution for his past actions, so there's no need to fuss about it now.

"Most people would categorize you as an addict with no life, which makes your persona on here, some tough talking conservative, a bit of a contradiction."

And that is what you get for (a) generalizing about someone with whom you have zero personal contact and (b) trying to pigeonhole me the way you libtards do with people who happen to share your sexual preference.

Suffice to say, you are comparing satire and humor with personal attacks. I've always said that liberals have no sense of humor. Now you have just gone and proven it.

If you don't like it, you can just moveon.org off this blog and compare notes with your fellow Kossacks and DemonicUnderwears.

Regards,
Peter H.

#70:
It’s my guess, based on those extras that it was probably a joke.

You cherry-picked those because three others were clearly not jokes. Furthermore, I strongly doubt that it would be considered a joking matter to imply a conservative like Whitney was gay.

Say Xeno,

but some of the actions he did at his age are despicable, and so long as it doesn’t lead to personal harassment, people have a right to be outraged by it.

Doesn't he have the right to do what he did just as you have the "right" to be outraged by it?

Ian said:

Now it doesn’t take a math genius to put two and two together here. In fact, it’s clear that a lot of people must have known that Whitney was gay including all those gay conservatives and libertarians he was going to spend his weekend with.

On the one hand it seems what Ian is proposing is that since he was going to a pride parade and hanging out with gay conservatives and libertarians, obviously that makes Whitney guilty by association. Of course nobody's ever heard of a straight person going to a gay pride parade.

On the other hand, the post in question also says the following:

Matt Viau of Grand Valley is spending his time in the Middle East for Arabic Studies. He was recently confronted by police for taking pictures of the Libyan embassy....

Nate Sherman from MSU will be on Virginia Beach this summer preaching the gospel to drunken students frantically looking for sex.

It's my guess, based on those extras that it was probably a joke. Do we even know that this Sylvester was one of the friends he supposedly came out to?

Oh well. Count on the Amazonian dyke to spin the rest of the post as well.
