As for Whitney, I still think that if anyone “outed” young Tyler it was the conservative blog. But I truly believe the blurb was planned and had the OK from the kid: after all, he was heading to DC to enjoy Pride weekend with conservative and libertarian friends. This was just a way for him to grease the skids so to speak and ease into informing – in a matter of fact manner – his conservative friends who might not have known.

He’s the kid, those who went out of their way to trash talk him are the adults. They could have at least ACTED like adults.

That said, I still think that you have been acting as an apologist for the screeching, screaming “outers”, trying to verbally mitigate what they did. They were wrong, period, end of story. If it’s not general knowledge and it’s done without the person’s express permission, it’s outing, period, end of story.

For what? All I’ve questioned is who actually “outed” the guy. There’s considerable evidence that he was “outed” by the conservative blog that first mentioned his going to DC to attend Gay Pride with gay conservatives and libertarians. Not only that but I doubt the blog would have made the comment without it being approved by Whitney who was well along in the coming out process. Furthermore, I have consistently maintained that the guy should be left alone and given some slack.

I’d ask for an apology for you vicious unwarranted attack but I suspect you are incapable of such a thing.

I’m still utterly disgusted by you folks who defend this behavior towards this guy. You and your associates hurt real people. You do not deserve to be debated on this point. Any position which supports or puts up any defense of hurting or trying to hurt an 18-year old this way is flat wrong.

I lost my temper and posted in the heat of that. I should not have. And I apologize to everyone in this thread, including Xeno, Jack and Ian. I normally try to avoid base insults and try to stick to real debate on real points.

My explanation (there’s no excuse) is that it just cut so close to the bone on a few points. I imagined what I would have felt like if this had happened to me, as I have a leadership role.

This whole thing really hits me close to home. As somebody who has just been coming out within the last six months, I can’t tell you how much abhorrence I have for these a**holes. I had to take time to work past instilled beliefs that I had. I had to take time to reconcile my Christian faith with my sexuality. It took years, from my self-denial in high school through trying to figure everything out in college.

I have no idea how something like this would have affected me in that process, but I am quite certain of one thing: it would not have had a positive effect, and it would not have helped me come to terms at all.

How can you do this to somebody who had to struggle with the same things you did? HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO AN EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD??? How can you even begin to defend any part of this. This is not right this is not good. This has no possibility of helping him or any other gay conservative. It’s a scare tactic. It’s crass bullying.

I’m not exactly Jesus when it comes to that but even so, I daresay more gays should have taken that approach to Tyler Whitney.

BTW, any you know what happened to Jason Wetherington after he came out to his friends, family and church? It won’t surprise me that Tyler will end up with a similar outcome.

Of course he had the right to do what he did, I never stated otherwise. It doesn’t make it a good thing on his part though, and I’m sure he realizes it by now.

Like I’ve stated before, I don’t hold a grudge against him. I wish him a happy Pride, and encourage him in participating in the festivities openly. That alone makes a great contribution for his past actions, so there’s no need to fuss about it now.

And that is what you get for (a) generalizing about someone with whom you have zero personal contact and (b) trying to pigeonhole me the way you libtards do with people who happen to share your sexual preference.

You cherry-picked those because three others were clearly not jokes. Furthermore, I strongly doubt that it would be considered a joking matter to imply a conservative like Whitney was gay.

Now it doesn’t take a math genius to put two and two together here. In fact, it’s clear that a lot of people must have known that Whitney was gay including all those gay conservatives and libertarians he was going to spend his weekend with.

On the one hand it seems what Ian is proposing is that since he was going to a pride parade and hanging out with gay conservatives and libertarians, obviously that makes Whitney guilty by association. Of course nobody’s ever heard of a straight person going to a gay pride parade.

On the other hand, the post in question also says the following:
