Help For Heroes
Remember the story this past Saturday about wounded British vets being jeered by less-than-savory members of the public? There is a group in the U.K. that is raising money to help with their care. Whatever you can spare, please give to them! Ask your friends, family, co-workers, everybody you know to give something to these guys! If you have a blog, please just post a link and let’s show them what the blogosphere can do! Thanks.

That does look like a good one. And for U.S. troops, here are a couple:
- Semper Fi Fund.
- Project Valour I/T
And I’d love to see others’ suggested groups.

Good call, ILC. Here are some other good groups for US soldiers:
America Supports You
Any Soldier
ECarePackage
Operation Gratitude

‘Tis the season to give!
I used to prefer giving to homeless groups. Then I realized I was already giving to them massively via all the taxes I pay… and after seeing some of the sentiments expressed on this blog by our anti-military lefties, I realized the troops could use the love.

Believe it or not, some of us opposed the war but do care about the troops. It’s shameful how poorly we take care of soldiers who return in terms of employment, benefits and worst of all treatment for the physical and mental damage done to them in the service.
If you oppose the government policy, then jeer at the politicians. They deserve it (if not for this, then for something else). But the soldiers are doing the job they were sent to do. We owe them more than what they are getting.

Now you’re on to government / taxpayer support of the troops. The best ways to support the troops, on that level, are:
1) Make sure they’re adequately trained, supplied and equipped.
2) Make sure they’re adequately paid. (Easing the burden of families back home.)
3) Don’t undermine their efforts. Don’t lead the terrorists to think they can beat the troops any day now, if they just hang on longer. Don’t throw away the fruits of the troops’ hard work.
Which means: Fight the Democrats currently blowing it on all 3 issues.
Better VA hospitals & services are also essential; I’m only noting that they’re sort of like “cleanup” or after the fact. It’s better to make sure the troops don’t get injured in the first place – by being equipped and funded and by not having their work in crushing the enemy’s spirit thrown away by all the moral aid and comfort Democrats give the enemy.

As for this:
I agree. We have had some “good” war opponents (whether Left or Right) on GayPatriot who spoke of the troops with respect. I extend respect to the respectful.

In the months leading up to the war I was living in Wiesbaden, Germany. I was staying with the parents of a friend, one of whom worked on the base there. I was on base many times (partly because they had a Popeye’s there.
and met many soldiers who were on their way to Iraq. No doubt many of them are among the dead and wounded. The troops are not an abstract concept to me. They are very real people.
I realize many on the left have contempt for the military. At the same time I hear a great deal of contempt for the soldiers from conservatvies. When complaints come up about soldiers being sent back for a third tour too often the response is “they knew what they were getting into when they volunteered.”
We don’t treat our veterans well. We never have, truth be told. And it’s a shame. I’m not saying that the military is above criticism or that there are a few very bad apples among the troops. But by and large the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan have done extraordinary things without the proper equipment and with very poor planning on the part of the administration. My beef is not with the soldiers. It’s with the administration.

Thanks, Houndentenor.
Could you give an example?
