The people were real, you mentioned the 'Plain Jane' who works in the same office with Lars. She was a real person, not a bimbo. The brother Gus, gives a wonderful talk about what it means to be a man, while folding the laundry in the basement. The only thing that was Hollywood, was the town. No such kind loving caring non judgmental place really exists. But that's ok, that is what the movies should be for, to tell a story about important human relationships, even if it is in a fairy tale setting. If only Hollywood would make more movies like this.
