The $146 billion stimulus package intended to jolt the economy by giving taxpayers rebates up to $1,200 includes cash returns for illegal immigrants who pay taxes.
Under the plan passed by the House, illegal immigrants who qualify as “resident aliens” and earned a minimum of $3,000 would be eligible for rebates of between $300-$600, FOX News has learned.
Only those illegals who have been assigned an Individual Tax Identification Number that allows them to file income taxes would be eligible. Resident aliens are defined as people who spend a “substantial” amount of time in the U.S. and have not been deported.
The provision has irked illegal immigration opponents, who say the assigning of TINs and collection of taxes from illegals sanctions their presence in the country.
Luckily, Senator John Ensign (R-NV) is making a stink about this horrible new incentive to cross the US-Mexico border.
CALL YOUR SENATORS NOW AND DEMAND THE SENATE REMOVE THIS PROVISION.
I wonder what GOP Frontrunner John McAmnesty thinks about this provision. Do I have any confidence that CNN will even ask the question at tonight’s debate?
PS — Yours truly, a legal-natural born resident of the USA for 39 years, will be getting no “rebate” with my own tax dollars.

UPDATE (from GPW): This is McCain’s chance to show that he has heard from conservatives concerned about his immigration stance. Let’s hope he supports Ensign on this.
Maybe we should take all our tax rebates, and build a Great Wall of the Republic with it.

That was part of the GayPatriot Economic Stimulus Package announced on January 21st!

Er, I see empirically failed demand-side polices and New Deal-style public works projects…

With protectionism thrown in for good measure? Perhaps instead of a border fence, we should have a Maginot line around the country? What could be better for our economy than to tell other countries “Screw you guys, I’m going home!”?
Thought I would let all of you know what happened when I called my Senators. I lvie in SC – Jim DeMint’s had a real person answer, very pleasant, took my comment, name and address. Lindsay Graham has a recording tell you to press 1, leave a brief message. NOT VERY PERSONAL!!
But the best of all, was that I decided to voice my opinion to “the Republican” frontrunner, he also has a recorded message. NOT VERY SMART FOR A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE I’d say!!!! gUESS WE DO KNOW WHERE HE STANDS
Well, if symbolic hollow gestures will placate the redmeat wing of the GOP on immigration, I’d recommend that McCain not stop at just adopting the redmeat crowd’s latest silliness, but stand up and match Romney on a strong federal -0- tolerance toward illegal aliens. Hey, we can have a reenactment of AndieJackson’s “Trail of Tears” by goosestepping all those illegal brownskins back to Mexico! Symbolism and pragmatic solutions in one long, march.
Hell, it’ll lose us the Hispanic vote that W has tirelessly brought into the GOP… but what the heck, catering to the redmeat crowd eager for a symbol that McCain has “found the light” after all the heat is worth it. Yeah, right… there goes the WH in 08… thanks again conservatives… the House, the Senate, and the WH. You guys are hitting 1000… FOR THE OTHER TEAM!
Hell, it’ll lose us the Hispanic vote that W has tirelessly brought into the GOP
How would deporting ILLEGAL immigrants change the vote count…..especially when they are not allowed to vote?
Furthermore, as I’ve pointed out elsewhere, Arizona’s Proposition 200, which imposes harsh prohibitions on illegal immigrants and hiring them and requires local law enforcement to inquire as to immigration status and act…..was supported by 47% of the Hispanics who voted.
Hispanics are not blacks or gays; they do not vote as an identity bloc, and numerous of them are just as sick and tired of the criminals flooding this country as those of us who aren’t Hispanic are. Do you actually believe that the legal citizens in San Francisco’s Mission District LIKE being targeted by gangs made up of illegal immigrants? Do you think that these people who did do it the right way are somehow less likely to demand that others do the same?
Michigan Matt in #6 speaks the words liberals have saved up for their political correctness diatribe when we try to straighten out the illegal alien mess. They believe we redmeat cretins are all ginned up to parboil the babies of the “innocent” brown skinned “victims” and eat them for lunch.
Here is the situation in brief:
1. We must staunch the hemorrhaging at the border so that we can concentrate on the problem of the amorphous 12 to 20+ million illegal aliens already here. (How have “they” arrived at those numbers?)
2. I support a biometric, tamperproof national ID card for citizens that can be used for voting, domestic travel, etc. This will cause a real problem for people who can not qualify for the card or produce appropriate documents.
3. We will see a fair amount of self deporting under the pressure of the national ID program.
4. I fully support a formal work permit program and I support a “grace period” during which employers and current alien employees come clean and get the needed papers. (Each will be exposing himself as persons who bear scrutiny.)
5. Families (illegal aliens) who have lived here for many (x) years and are not on the dole or have police records and/or have a child who was born here could apply for permanent residency. I would suggest that each member of Congress be given a set number of “residency permits” for his district. If each had a total of 23,000, that would take care of 10 million illegal aliens. Some Congressmen will run way short of residency permits and others won’t know what to do with them. It will require those who can not get the residency permit to move to areas that will award them or go home. No Congressman is going to get away with bringing a bunch of welfare aliens into his district. Note: permanent residency and citizenship are not the same thing. Those with permanent residency get in line BEHIND those who have followed the rules in applying for citizenship.
6. Once the border is sealed, illegal aliens and those who harbor them are subject to immediate fines, deportation and/or imprisonment.
7. Everyone sponsoring a visa must keep up with the recipient and report the person to ICE if the conditions are not met. This includes universities, charities, employers, etc.
8. ICE must be redesigned and given much stronger police powers.
9. For those who care deeply about our brown skinned brothers south of the border, I suggest you head on down there an put your money where your sympathy gushes.
MM, it’s you – with your fetishes for illegal aliens, no principles / no ideas in the name of “moderation”, and the castigation of any good person concerned about border security as alleged ‘redmeat’ ‘goose-steppers’ – who are likely to contribute to a Democratic Presidency next fall.
Because, speaking as an undecided Independent, I don’t think either Romney (whom I recall you working for in NH? no?) nor McCain can plain *inspire* the American people enough to beat a historic ticket, Billaryobama. Congratulations.
Question – since when are illegals considered “resident aliens”? Doesn’t that require a green card?
All other illegality issues aside, good on ’em for paying taxes, but in my mind that doesn’t make them “resident aliens”.
I dunno – maybe it’s just me.
NDXXX offers: “How would deporting ILLEGAL immigrants change the vote count”… um, never said deporting illegal immigrants would change the vote count, NDXXX. The thread was about ginning-up the redmeat crowd with nonsense about stopping illegal aliens from getting even more tax dollars paid in by all us white folk.
Let’s remember that as high as 56% of all those “illegal immigrants” the redmeat crowd grouses about –and by the way, the immigration issue remains ranked at either 8th or 9th of top 10 issues in the ’08 elections by primary voters– are here because of technical violations of LEGAL immigration. They became “illegal” aliens when they didn’t meet statutory requirements for annual work permits, etc.
The folks you and others like to target as illegal aliens –the day laborers coming across the border on a routine basis without papers, without SSNs, without TINs, not paying federal taxes, etc– those are the ones you use to conveniently symbolize “illegal immigrants”.
No one, except the redmeat rabble rousers on radio and elsewhere, argue that those illegal aliens should get a rebate check… but if an alien pays taxes and has a SSN and a TIN, it’s fair to contend that they should get the rebate too.
heliotrope hits on any number of points I agree with –except the little sniggerdly slams ala ILC/Calarato/etc. I’d add that we also need to severely punish those employers who do engage illegal aliens… high fines would be better than prison terms. And we need to stop universities, drama schools, tech schools and beauty schools from being able to provide educational visas for aliens.
This weekend, our family will be going over to Niagara-on-the-Lake in Canada. We expect long delays at the border, the new requirement to show something other than a Michigan DL to gain reentry and a level of scrutiny of our vehicle usually reserved for when we’re gaining access to parking lots around the US Capitol building. Reasonable security, albeit later than it should have happened. I guess if we had had a Congress intent on really protecting America and Americans instead of playing the “pass a symbolic law” game, it’d have been here sooner.
The simple truth, despite all the nonsense from the redmeat crowd, is that the Hispanic community does perceive the anti-immigrant tone from the far right fringe of the GOP and elsewhere as racially motivated.
Frankly, I think if immigration policy were set by the likes of Tom Delay, Duke Cunningham and the last batch of conservative leaders in Congress, the “Trail of Tears” would be a likely FIRST STEP for them on immigration reform.
America can manage immigration reform. But because conservatives sat on their bloody hands during the 06 elections, the conservatives have now left it up to a Democrat controlled Congress to resolve. Smart move. And just like ion 06, tossing the baby out with the bath water isn’t smart even if it makes conservatives feel good. I’d rather we keep the WH than engage in yet another conservative policy demonstration of how potent conservatives are when it comes to screwing up the works.
JMHO.
ILC/Calarato/etc offers: “Congratulations” on the notion that McCain or Romney will be the nominee and they can’t inspire America to come out and beat Sens Clinton/Obama… I’d remind folks here that when our beloved RonnieReagan was running against Carter, he only got a bare majority of the vote at 50.7% and had one of the lowest voter turnout records since Dewey(R) ran against Truman in 48 or Roosevelt in 44.
Inspiring, eh? Oh yeah 1980 was Ronnie’s high watermark for inspiring voters because in the landslide victory of Ronnie’s in 1984 over Walt Mondale, the election got even a LOWER turnout… about 52.9% of the eligible voters. To beat that inspiring record we need to go back to Cal Coolidge and the perfectly corrupt Warren Harding in the 1920s.
Inspiring, yeah… that’s the ticket. LOL. No, that’s revisionism in full gear. I can beat you dollars to your donuts ILC/Calarato/whatever, the voter turnout for an election pitting McCain or Romney against Clinton or Obama will be higher than RonnieReagan “inspired” results.
#10 Mike:
It is the “green card” system that is broken and years behind. No one enforces it because it is a sticky spider web of endless bureaucracy. You can stop a van full of illegals and call ICE and quickly learn that they have neither the manpower nor the will to show up. Furthermore, being an “illegal” alien under current law ranks just below jay-walking.
This means that “illegal” aliens are de facto permanent residents. If they want to start the process of legal residency, they get court protection until the issue is decided. Sanctuary minded folks advise them to keep their status in the ICE machinery and throw a new bone in now and then so that they have the protection of the courts. We built this mess all by ourselves.
Like it or not, we are going to pass out “green cards” (Amnesty) to a huge number of resident “illegal” aliens. There is no governor of a border state and no will in Washington to do otherwise.
If we had a serious problem with counterfeit money, we would replace it and give people a limited time to turn in their warehouse full of old twenties for replacement. After that, we would only exchange small amounts with much registration and scrutiny.
The same would work with a national ID. It would cause a lot of illegals to self deport. Then we would have to wade through the rest. I doubt we even have the will to do this.
Michigan Matt, where do you find statistics (like 56%) on a group estimated to range from 12 to 20 million? In fact, where do those estimates come from? 56% is a definitive number. That gives me pause.
Other than that, have I any cause to believe that the repeated “redmeat” nomenclature is a bit “sniggerdly”? (You might wish to change that term to “snarky” as “sniggerly” has been awarded the political correctness banishment prize for being a racist epithet.
No one, except the redmeat rabble rousers on radio and elsewhere, argue that those illegal aliens should get a rebate check… but if an alien pays taxes and has a SSN and a TIN, it’s fair to contend that they should get the rebate too.
Um…..in order to get a Social Security number, you have to demonstrate the right to work in the United States — which requires you either to demonstrate that you are a citizen by birth or naturalization, or that you have INS authorization to work in the US (a green card or valid visa).
If illegal aliens are getting Social Security numbers, the government should stand accused of giving them to them illegally. And I find it the height of hypocrisy when the government punishes employers for hiring illegal immigrants, but itself freely hands out benefits that, BY LAW, are reserved for citizens of the United States.
They became “illegal” aliens when they didn’t meet statutory requirements for annual work permits, etc.
So did the 9/11 hijackers who overstayed their visitor visas.
Sorry. We have laws in this country, and if you can’t be bothered to follow them, you don’t need to be here.
The simple truth, despite all the nonsense from the redmeat crowd, is that the Hispanic community does perceive the anti-immigrant tone from the far right fringe of the GOP and elsewhere as racially motivated.
I find that amusingly hypocritical, given Mexico’s laws on illegal immigration — especially the fact that Mexican law DENIES many rights to non-citizens, and even to naturalized citizens.
if you want to see the La Raza crowd’s head explode, tell them that you will support for the US the same immigration laws as Mexico has, since they fully support those — and then read these off.
Then watch those “racist”-screaming Hispanics explain why the motherland of so many of them has seemingly zero problem with racial profiling, racial quotas, and the right to expel people or block them from entering if they upset Mexico’s racial balance.
