Observations from CPAC so far…

February 7, 2008 by LibertyDC

It seems like the general buzz for McCain’s speech is good…

The blogger who was sitting right beside me was the guy from “My Man Mitt”…  he left about an hour ago and so now there is just an empty seat with the placard “My Man Mitt” in front of it…  lots of folks are stopping to take pictures of it, pretty much sums up where things for Mitt and company…

Jeff Gannon stopped by…  he is pimping a book called “The Great Media War”

I am always reminded why I am a Republican at events like this…  lots of clean-cut, good looking folks in suits and not a single dirty hippy with an f-ing Che shirt on…

More than one person is confused about why I am sitting here instead of Bruce…

Oh, and best line so far, from a young woman walking by me “Why do all of you have to be so good looking.  It’s just not fair.  All the good ones are gay.”  Hard to argue with that.

    Listened all afternoon at the office;

    1) A very good speech, but Mitt the Flip posturing as a “conservative”; **gag**

    2) Dick Armey’s speech was powerful medicine. In the voting booth you only have two choices.

    3) McCain’s was to the point, if not well received.

    4) Who let Secy. Cho speak?

    5) If we were not at war, Paul’s positions I could support…other than “life at conception” as a civil-right. Let Germany, Korea, Japan and the Europeans defend themselves (and their interests) …and reduce the subsidies and elbow-jiggling. Maybe eight, ten-years from now, it will be his time to put the American house in order; but right now we’re too-engaged. All gods curse the day that McCain made that “100-yrs. war” quip.

crying because he quit or because none of them can get jobs?

Probably because now the Republican Party will be bitches for the liberals?

    Sorry, Be-yotches.

Maybe because there is no spine anymore in the party, just bleeding gash RINOs?

All I ask of any American, conservative, moderate, independent, or enlightened Democrat, is to judge my record as a whole, and accept that I am not in the habit of making promises to my country that I do not intend to keep.

I find these words in McCain’s speech to CPAC to be very reassuring. He made a lot of promises steeped in conservative principle in his speech and I am willing to believe that he means to keep those promises.

We doubters will watch his actions and measure them against his words. I hope to be able to support him with a sense of optimism.

I’m not a McCain fan, and I didn’t vote for him on Super Tuesday. However, I was cautiously impressed by his down-to-earth, I’m-telling-you-I’m-really-a-Conservative speech he delivered to CPAC this afternoon. I only wish that his record on conservative issues was as laudatory as his orations were. However, now that he is the front runner, and the heir apparent to the Republican Presidential Nomination, let’s see how long it takes for the Clintons and the here-to-fore fawning press to viciously attack and annihilate him.

The good looking folks in suits line would make me happy to be a republican, everyone loves a well dressed man. I would agree that setting there is probably a lot more professional and not like some college dorm party…which is what I would expect of a more liberal event.

And I am kinda surprised you got that line at a CPAC event but then maybe I have misjudged the atmosphere of places like that…

Good looking people in suits and a gay friendly woman, maybe I am in the wrong party.

I am particularly sensitive to how McCain handles these issues:

The political speech guarantees in the first amendment.

Closing Gitmo vs. a reasonable alternative that does not unleash the ACLU on those who defy current international conventions.

Addressing the foolishness of “man made” global warming.

Confusing tax cuts and refunds with welfare and entitlements. (Income redistribution.)

Restructuring the immigration system and enforcement. (Followed by a realistic and systematic plan for dealing with the 12-20 million illegals already here.)

So, the ‘Straight Talk Express’ just ran over ‘The McCain Mutiny’ and Captain Queeg is about to hit the open road. As the good Captain pulls over and orders all you tax cutting, fence building, job killing, profit taking, right-wing, northeast, Mormon loving, xenophobes into the back of the bus, take a good look at the mangled, broken, political careers underneath the bus: Rudy, Fred, Duncan and Mitt- with just enough room left for Preacher Mike – as you climb aboard.

Those of you refusing to board, choosing instead to wander off into the political wilderness for the next four -or more – years, may just want to reconsider what’s at stake: Conservatism for the foreseeable future. Sure, Captain Queeg will ‘clarify’ all his prior positions and squishy statements regarding taxes, fences, and Judges, but what 72 year-old can remember everything he said 8 months ago, never-mind 8 years ago. Just get in line, get onboard and get with the program – we have bigger battles to wage against Mr. Change and Mrs. Experience and her husband- Mr. Feels-Your-Pain.

Captain Cranky may not be my ideal candidate, but I’m hoping he’ll drive that bus of his right over the Presidential hopes of Mrs. Menopause and Mr. Change Machine.

    Cheers…

The fact that he had to make a speech like that in the first place should tell you something. I wish the conventioneers would stab him in the back and give it to Jeb!
