World Leaders Nervous About Obama & Clinton

March 3, 2008 by Average Gay Joe

It appears that both Obama AND Clinton are not doing well “restoring” America’s image with the international community, according to this Newsweek article.

Best line (emphasis mine):Â

“A senior Latin American diplomat, who asked to remain unnamed because of the sensitivity of the topic, says, “Look, we’re all watching Obama with bated breath and hoping [his election] will be a transforming moment for the world. But now that we’re listening to him on trade—the issue that affects us so deeply—we realize that maybe he doesn’t wish us well. In fact, we might find ourselves nostalgic for Bush, who is brave and courageous on trade and immigration.”

Ouch.  That’s going to leave a nasty mark!

UPDATE (from Dan): And let’s not forget the Canadians and Mexicans concerned about Obama’s desire to renegotiate NAFTA and Hillary’s newfound opposition to that job-creating treaty. Hearing these two go on against NAFTA is making our neighbors wonder about American commitments to treaties we’ve signed. And not just our neighbors.

we’re all watching Obama with bated breath and hoping [his election] will be a transforming moment for the world.

Just out of curiousity – How do they expect it be a transforming moment for the world? That America has a brown-skinned President?  Or: that America has an anti-American President; one who would submit to John Kerry’s "global test" before defending American interests and/or human freedom?  Can someone explain it to me?

P.S. Fareed Zakaria – good link.  It is a treat to read him castigating the Democratic candidates (rightly) for their "xenophobia and chauvinism".

HillOrgasma are part of the clique who essentially told SoKo, Peru and Colombia to "go to hell" on trade agreements just to spite Bush. I’ve been asking for months how that’s supposed to improve our alleged poor image in the world.

In fact, we might find ourselves nostalgic for Bush,

I think there would be at least one definite plus to HillOrgasma getting the WH. Folks all over the place would realize Bush isn’t as bad as they were told they were supposed to believe. But the death and destruction that would come with that would not make it worthwhile to find out.

Sure the leaders of other countries would get a permanent rim job from HillObama, but what would it do for the people?

I wish I could live in a world where we no longer gave a crap about the rest of the world and see how they cope.

The world would collapse.. so i would never want to see it.

We lived in that world. Its called a "democratic administration". Liberals dont give a rats ass how the rest of the world thinks about us. You’ll notice they worked very hard to ignore Bush’s trips to Africa and Eastern Europe where he was lavished with love and adoration.

They only care how other elite liberal effetes think about us.

I think it’s the latter, ILC. Most countries looked upon the first Clinton administration as the halcyon days; you had a President that would rather pathetically do anything they asked regardless of whether it made sense for the United States or not, but who was so powerless domestically that he had to accept free-trade agreements.

Now you have the option of two candidates who will also slavishly obey whatever other countries tell them to do, but who want to impose adamantine protectionism.

I hope someone reminds St. Hilarybeast and Obama that current, sould economic analysis shows that rising protectionism helped trigger the worst-effects of the Great Depression and that many of the then-popular New Deal programs of FDR to "manage" the Depression actually prolonged it’s effects until the advent of the war-economy of 1941/1942.

As for "where’s the beef" in their fiscal promises; the more important question is who’s going to pay for all that cattle; the vast middle-class of taxpayers?

So if Obama is elected, does that mean affirmative action really does work?
