Gay Media Prefers Corrupt Gay Democrat to Honest Lesbian Republcan

The Democratic former governor of New Jersey and Advocate cover boy Jim McGreevey is back in the news. A judge yesterday dismissed his ex-wife’s “claim of emotional distress.” Meanwhile, Jamie Kirchik reminds us that this Democrat’s scandal “wasn’t just about sex.”

McGreevey wasn’t just engaged in extramarital trysts with men, he was also putting them on the state payroll. While Jamie acknowledges the “eagerness of gays to champion the [ex-]Governor of the Garden State,” given the “paucity of openly gay people in public affairs,” he finds:

McGreevey inadvertently hurt the cause of gay civil rights as much as any crusading, socially conservative political activist could have hoped to do. He fed the stereotype that gays are untrustworthy and self-absorbed, and that homosexuality is a personal weakness

Exactly. And yet the Advocate put him on its cover.

In a headline on another cover, that “national gay & lesbian news magzine” accused an open lesbian of “copping out” because Mary Cheney didn’t say what they wanted her to say in her memoir, Now It’s My Turn: A Daughter’s Chronicle of Political Life.

Hmm, here we have a lesbian comfortable in her sexuality, faithful to her partner and close to her family, a woman who is anything but self-absorbed, even having the courage to come out in conservative circles and the Advocate dismisses her writing. Guess it must be that parenthetical letter after her name. That (R) seems to make one anathema to gay activists and journalists while that (D) excuses them of all wrongdoing.

If we really want to promote a positive image of gay men and lesbians in American society, gay leaders as well as our advocates in the media would be condemning the conduct of men like Jim McGreevey and wishing more people like Mary Cheney would be open about their sexuality.

Liberals just can’t stand decent people. If you’re not selfish, arrogant, angry, etc. why you just aren’t "normal".

  2. It’s important to not lose sight that Gov. McSlimey wasn’t pushed out of the Governor’s office for coming-out, nor even for having his "boyfriend" on the State payroll; the real problem McGreevey had was a growing political and finacial corruption scandal that was building-steam at the same time.  His campaign-contributors were being investigated and indicted, and his administration was coming under-siege for both corruption and incompetence.

The whole "Gay American"-thing was just a convenient excuse and cover-story for his immediate departure before his Administration collapsed under it’s own weight.  If he had been doing a good job as Governor with decent approval-ratings he could have survuived the outing, and maybe even the boyfriend-on-the-payroll if Sipel had been a qualified Homeland Security administrator…rather than an under-qualified aerobics-instructor or-whatever-he-was who couldn’t even get a security-clearance.  As it was, the unqualified boyfriend-nepotism was seen as yet another political-incompetence; not overt criminality by NJ standards.  And the anonymous rest-stop cruising and other sleazy ho-jinks didn’t help either….especially as the NJ State Police security detail got painted as his co-enablers; especially for the curious broken-leg-on-the- beach saga that sounded "fishy" from the start, and was revealed to be a very-funny tragi-comedy worthy of a very-bad gay-porn vignette from Falcon or Titan in retrospect.

  3. It’s simple: Only one of them has a treasury-looting, anti-gay war criminal for a dad.

[Anti-gay? Any evidence for that? And the same goes for your other accusations, because that’s all they are accusations, with no evidence to back them up. Amazing, people like you ignore everything the Vice President has said on gays and judge him not by his words but by your own distorted image of the man. Amazing. –-Dan]

It is that and her actual name, Cheney. Maybe if she was Mary Smith she may have been cut some slack. But with the name Cheney? That’s like waving a red cape in front of a bull. I have liberal friends who share that name, and they need to distance themselves from any relationship to the Vice President.

As to the former governer of NJ, can’t he just go away already!! He has used and abused everyone in sight, and no, he has done no favors to the gay community by using them as a fig leaf.

  9. disinter, where do you come up with that 1 million figure?  It seems that for some liberals, if it’s on a left-wing blog, it must true even if it has no basis in fact.

  10. Mary Cheney simply gets a free pass because of who her father is.  If she was the same person with the same personal life and same political beliefs without her families protection, she would be attacked and shunned just like other gays/lesbians for attacking the american lifestyle.  I’m guessing people in her circle wouldn’t go after her lifestyle because they’re probably afraid her father would shoot them.

  11. Hey Kevin,

WTF?  How about maybe she treats other people with some respect and they return it? Of course assine comments and insults about her father are what passes for discussion among liberal circles, no?

  12. Clevelend Coolidge should be banned for his absurd, unsubstantiated charges against Dick Cheney.

  13. #10: Free pass?  Kevin, I’m confused.  By "free pass" are you referring to Time Magazine publishing a column by James Dobson entitled "Two Mommies Is One Too Many" in which he criticizes Mary Cheney for having a child she intends to raise with her lesbian partner?  Is that what you meant?  I’m not sure I follow.

  14. I’m a true Conservative, so I’m not the biggest fan of the Bush Administration.  But Dick Cheney did a wonderful thing for gay people with one simple act that he has repeated over and over again – in the victory gatherings on stage after big wins Mary Cheney and her partner are up there with the entire family.  He loves his daughter and is unashamed of her.  Pretty incredible from a man who could be butchered in his political circles for it.

I know what you mean by the gay press holding up the wrong images, but our community doesn’t want to embrace us.  Even my friends look at me like I have 2 heads when I tell them I am a Christian Conservative who isn’t even real sure about the GOP because it has lost its way and not stood up for the Constitution.

  15. Having a lesbian comfortable in her sexuality, faithful to her partner and close to her family is always a problem for lesbian, and for all LGBT. But actually, many can enjoy this kind of love at last, as many bisexual on (bimingle.com) can enjoy so. And they also show the same idea about their love. That’s great.
