As I have said before, what really pissed Obama off about Wright was not what Wright was saying; it was his remark that Obama was a politician who would say anything he needed to to get elected.

There was no UCC before 1957. Your statement that “(t)he UCC dates back to 1620″ is clearly in error. It is also of great importance that very little is known of the formal religious affiliations of the founding fathers. Time and again, when “Congregationalist” is assigned to a founding father, the source is the Congregationalist Library and there is no second source for verification. The Congregationalist Library lists John Adams as a Congregationalist. In truth, Adams was raised as a Congregationalist, but became a Unitarian well before his presidency. Therefore, he can not be listed as a Congregationalist president, yet the Congregationalist Library does list him as such.

Fact checking, particularly in the internet age, is a very important process. I will not allow any research paper submitted to me to state as fact any bit of information that can not be sourced to at least two reliable resources. If you will check your point that “a majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence were UCC,” you will discover the “UCC” designation is in error and that in every case, those signers determined to be Congregationalists were so designated by the Congregationalist Library with no source cited.

You might also look into when the Congregationalist Library was established and for what purpose.

I have no beef with Congregationalists. But I am always suspicious when overblown claims hit the table. It is a strong indicator that we are about to take a ride to a strange conclusion based on a false premise.

“Christianism” is a term of false moral equivalence between terrorists who claim that Islam commands them to violently kill non-believers and Christians who oppose same-sex marriage between two consenting, unrelated adults.

Furthermore, take out the “God” references in Wright’s speech and you have typical leftist propaganda. Yes, Wright did say everything he was accused of saying, and no, he was not quoted out of context. The former head of the NAACP in Durham, NC was just like him, with his post 9/11 comments. The man is a bigot and a disgrace to the cloth. To equivocate him with the man who said “I have a dream that someday men may be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” is utterly disingenuous.

Too many people are focusing too much on the racist tone of Rev. Wright’s sermons. Wright was greatly influenced by Rev. James L. Coyne’s books interpreting “liberation theology”. Thus, Wright’s most dangerous sermons were those in which he attacked capitalism and advocated Marxism. On more than one occasion statements by the Obamas, particularly some of Michelle’s whining, sound like the ideas Wright would have preached.

Of course, if can you trace the roots of the UCC you get back to Calvin, Luther, Erasmus, Adam, Eve and all the animals on Noah’s ark. (Not to mention the KKK, the Roundheads, the Millerites and the Shakers.)

The UCC dates back to 1620. The last merger (there have been others) was 1957. And yes, a majority of the signers were Congregationalists, which is the main predecessor body of the UCC.

I could go on reminding everyone that a majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence were UCC and that the congregational polity of our churches inspired the American Revolution. Or that the UCC was the backbone of the Abolitionist Movement and later the Civil Rights Movement.

The UCC was formed in 1957. Pretty late to for the Declaration of Independence, American Revolution or the Abolitionist Movement eras.
