#33 - "Is there anything left to conservatism besides hating liberals?"

Why yes, Benji. It means making sure that there are no more liberals in charge of the government from the community level on up.

Roll over. Play dead. Good doggie.

The right complains that Democrats are godless and hate Jesus.

Mainly because they namecall religious people and call them "bitter", as well as making reference to "superstitious idiots" - plus, as Trace pointed out above, throw screaming hissy fits about "theocracy" when bookshelves behind a candidate appear to look like a cross if you squint hard enough.

Then when they talk about their faith they get attacked for that too.

Mainly because the first makes it obvious that they're lying on the second.

As I have said before, what really pissed Obama off about Wright was not what Wright was saying; it was his remark that Obama was a politician who would say anything he needed to to get elected.

Obama is cynically and hypocritically using religion for political gain after his supercilious comments about people "bitterly clinging to religion" (I'm paraphrasing). And his true religious beliefs, if he has any, remain unclear. Is he a Muslim? Is he a Christian? Is he a Flying Spaghetti Monsterist?

He actually claims he is doing the lord's work? Socialism is the Lord's work? Calling your grandma a racist and then calling her a "typical white person" (how Jeffersonian—George, not Thomas—of him) is the lord's work? If that's the Lord's work then I'm going to become an atheist.

I'm confused. The right complains that Democrats are godless and hate Jesus. Then when they talk about their faith they get attacked for that too. There's no issue here. Just an attack machine that will pounce on anything a liberal does. Is there anything left to conservatism besides hating liberals? I don't see it. You've abandoned all your principles over the years and have nothing left to run on but fear and liberal-bashing. Sad.

Plus, the whole exercise is interesting, but a sideshow.

David's original effort here was to say in effect, "Congregationalists are super duper important in American history, therefore Wright and Trinity UCC can't possibly be vile, anti-American, hate-mongering racists." Bzzzzzzzzzzzt. Wrong answer. Even if the premise were true (and you guys are doing a fine job examining it), the conclusion of exonerating Wright and Trinity in NO way follows.

#27 David:

There was no UCC before 1957. Your statement that "(t)he UCC dates back to 1620" is clearly in error. It is also of great importance that very little is known of the formal religious affiliations of the founding fathers. Time and again, when "Congregationalist" is assigned to a founding father, the source is the Congregationalist Library and there is no second source for verification. The Congregationalist Library lists John Adams as a Congregationalist. In truth, Adams was raised as a Congregationalist, but became a Unitarian well before his presidency. Therefore, he can not be listed as a Congregationalist president, yet the Congregationalist Library does list him as such.

Fact checking, particularly in the internet age, is a very important process. I will not allow any research paper submitted to me to state as fact any bit of information that can not be sourced to at least two reliable resources. If you will check your point that “a majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence were UCC,” you will discover the "UCC" designation is in error and that in every case, those signers determined to be Congregationalists were so designated by the Congregationalist Library with no source cited.

You might also look into when the Congregationalist Library was established and for what purpose.

I have no beef with Congregationalists. But I am always suspicious when overblown claims hit the table. It is a strong indicator that we are about to take a ride to a strange conclusion based on a false premise.

#28: Liberation theology largely claims to be Catholic. Nonetheless, it claims to bring together two diametrically opposed world views. The anti-semite Marx called religion "the opiate of the masses." In spite of the ludicrous claims of people like Robert Mugabe to link Marx and Jesus, Communism is inherently atheistic. How, therefore, could any religion reconcile with it?

There was no organization known as the United Church of Christ until 1957. It was created by a merger of two organizations: the Evangelical and Reformed Church (formed in 1934) and the Congregational Christian Churches. Both of these organizations were created from mergers of smaller Protestant churches of varying ethnic backgrounds and differences in beliefs. Trinity Church is not representative of all UCC-affiliated churches; they run the gamut in their political beliefs and ethnic makeups.

"Christianism" is a term of false moral equivalence between terrorists who claim that Islam commands them to violently kill non-believers and Christians who oppose same-sex marriage between two consenting, unrelated adults.

Furthermore, take out the "God" references in Wright's speech and you have typical leftist propaganda. Yes, Wright did say everything he was accused of saying, and no, he was not quoted out of context. The former head of the NAACP in Durham, NC was just like him, with his post 9/11 comments. The man is a bigot and a disgrace to the cloth. To equivocate him with the man who said "I have a dream that someday men may be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" is utterly disingenuous.

Just a few months ago Governor Huckabee was trashed by leftists in the MSM when a television commercial appeared to show a Cross behind him. Light shining on the shelves in a bookcase created the image of a Cross. But we know the left will hold their collective noses and overlook Obama's pandering to Christians in Kentucky.

Too many people are focusing too much on the racist tone of Rev. Wright's sermons. Wright was greatly influenced by Rev. James L. Coyne's books interpreting "liberation theology". Thus, Wright's most dangerous sermons were those in which he attacked capitalism and advocated Marxism. On more than one occasion statements by the Obamas, particularly some of Michelle's whining, sound like the ideas Wright would have preached.

"The UCC was formed in 1957. Pretty late to for the Declaration of Independence, American Revolution or the Abolitionist Movement eras.

Of course, if can you trace the roots of the UCC you get back to Calvin, Luther, Erasmus, Adam, Eve and all the animals on Noah’s ark. (Not to mention the KKK, the Roundheads, the Millerites and the Shakers.)

To say that “a majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence were UCC” is full blown idiocy. However, to say they were protestants would be accurate."

The UCC dates back to 1620. The last merger (there have been others) was 1957. And yes, a majority of the signers were Congregationalists, which is the main predecessor body of the UCC.

"David, really. What part of “Not ‘God Bless America’! No, no, no! God DAMN America!’ is not clear enough for you?"

I guess it would be the entire one-hour sermon on the failure of man-made governments. Rev. Wright made it clear that he was speaking about the government -- not the people. I've listened to the entire sermon

#10 David blows the following smoke out of his navel:
I could go on reminding everyone that a majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence were UCC and that the congregational polity of our churches inspired the American Revolution. Or that the UCC was the backbone of the Abolitionist Movement and later the Civil Rights Movement.

When you find this type of claim being made, you know you are dealing with a sect that is overreaching in trying to establish legitimacy.

The UCC has certainly bent and shaped traditional Christian doctrine to overlook homosexual behavior. I would be astounded out of my very skin if David can produce the evidence that "a majority of those who signed the Declaration of Independence" were indifferent to homosexual behavior.

Bring it on David. I enjoy a powerful, reasoned debate.

There is nothing racist about Trinity UCC.

If they aren't, why did a bigoted sonofabitch like Jeremiah Wright get a job as pastor and keep it so long?

Sorry, but despite what you want us to believe, blacks can be racist too. To spin a pile of bullshit that Trinity isn't racist is absurd and an insult to people's intelligence. And Goddamn anybody who defends that kind of hatred and bigotry.

Rev. Wright did not call on God to damn America.
David, really. What part of "Not 'God Bless America'! No, no, no! God DAMN America!' is not clear enough for you?

ILoveCapitalism,

I've gone over, and refuted, the other accusations against Trinity. There is nothing racist about Trinity UCC. Rev. Wright did not call on God to damn America. You may continue believing the accusations -- it makes very little difference.

Leah,

What "double-standard" are you decrying? The one where candidate Rev. Huckabee speaks about restoring "God's laws". Or are you referring to Bush's tax payer funded faith-based initiatives? Please clarify.
