So Much For That Obama Blowout…

The Messiah doesn’t have any clothes anymore….

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows the race for the White House is tied with Barack Obama and John McCain each attracting 44% of the vote. However, when “leaners” are included, it’s McCain 47% and Obama 46%.

This is the first time McCain has enjoyed even a statistically insignificant advantage of any sort since Obama clinched the Democratic nomination on June 3.

Even more devastating numbers for Obama are deeper in the Rasmussen poll:

McCain is currently viewed favorably by 55% of the nation’s voters, Obama by 51%. That is the lowest rating for Obama since he wrapped up the nomination. Obama is viewed favorably by 83% of Democrats, 22% of Republicans, and 47% of unaffiliated voters. For McCain, the numbers are 87% favorable among Republicans, 26% among Democrats, and 61% among unaffiliated voters.

HUGE problem for Obama — McCain is winning the “middle” voters that both of them are going after.

Forty-six percent (46%) of voters trust McCain more than Obama on energy issues while Obama is trusted more by 42%.

Forty-six percent (46%) of voters nationwide now say that Obama views U.S. society as unfair and discriminatory. That’s up from 43% in July and 39% in June. By a three-to-one margin, American voters hold the opposite view and believe that our society is generally fair and decent.

No Messiah here folks, nothing to see, move along. Just a normal angry American liberal who Hates America First.

So much for “Obama coattails”…. Democrats across the USA should now be focusing their attention on a previous election: 1972.

UPDATE (from Dan): Sometimes, it’s uncanny how Bruce and I often (without informing the other) want to blog on similar topics. I had planned a followup to my July 25 post on the polls suggesting that things don’t look as good for Obama as they once did. He’s falling back too soon, before Carter started seriously slipping in 1976 and Dukakis in 1988. And he also seems to be spending more money on media than McCain.

Hmm. . . sounds a lot like the final weeks of the contest for the Democratic nomination where he outspent Hillary Clinton but where she outperformed him at the ballot box.

May be slow blogging as I’m finally taking a bit of a vacation. With my family right now in a very blue region of a purple state.

UP-UPDATE (from Dan again): A Zogby poll which had Obama up by 10 in July now has McCain up by 1. Second poll in as many weeks which has my man John up. (Via Instapundit.)

  1. Bruce, we must have been typing “The Messiah has no clothes” within minutes of each other :-)

  2. In that spirit, I’ll recap my point. It’s probably more appropriate here anyway. This Messiah does have no clothes. Which means: Opposing Him is smart and fun. I sense a new energy across the center-right, analogous to the new energy that emerged against Kerry around this time in 2004. Will history repeat itself?

  3. So McCain actually beats Obama in all categories in this poll.

He’s more popular with his own party (87% / 83%)
    More popular with independents (61% / 47%)
and more popular with the opposing party (26% / 22%)

I think these polls are pretty worthless but its interesting nonetheless.

  4. Related: A good analysis from AoSHQ on why The Obamassiah needs to lay off the race card:

I’m sure you’ve been in a situation where someone else in the room with you begins to make a scene. They start by talking too loud and escalate to outright screaming about whatever it is that’s bothering them. And somewhere along the line they will look to you, the bystander, and plead unfairness. “Don’t you agree with me?” they ask. But you know, because you’re not an idiot, that their version of the facts may not necessarily be the truth. So you do what we all do: you refuse to meet their eyes. You shuffle your feet. You get uncomfortable.

Obama is making a scene. And his version of the facts doesn’t seem to be the truth, but he doesn’t care, he’s asking all those middle-ground, undecided voters anyway: “don’t you think the racism against me is unfair?” Instead of answering, undecided America is shuffling its feet and refusing to meet his eyes. He’s made them profoundly uncomfortable.

In other words, BO, get over yourself and stop being such a drama queen.

  5. He’s over-using the race card. He’ll wear it out.

It started to wear thin, in the primaries, giving McCain the perfect riposte (if he should choose to use it): “Well, Obama’s just doing what he did to Bill and Hillary in the primaries, with all these racial accusations.”

  8. Fred Hiatt’s article today about Obama is a hoot:
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/03/AR2008080301574.html

Hiatt senses that Obama is in trouble. But he is in denial about the true cause: that his Messiah is, in fact, a stupid, ignorant and arrogant gaffe machine. Hiatt’s recommendation: Obama should accept McCain’s offer of a series of townhall debates. (A format where McCain would cream Obama - though Hiatt assumes the opposite.)

    Comment by ILoveCapitalism — August 4, 2008 @ 5:28 pm - August 4, 2008

  9. (In fairness, Hiatt makes some good points about general Democratic arrogance toward Middle American voters. He understands Obama’s problems in part. Just not, IMO, completely.)

  10. #9 - “general Democratic arrogance toward Middle American voters” ??

That’s the understatement of the day, Rob. The DNC talking points on PMSNBC pretty much indicates that we Southerners are still a bunch of racists at heart.

I guess when you are a bunch of bitter clingy gun owners, it comes with the territory.

Talk about being clueless in the Big Apple. These people are so shallow it’s pathetic. I have a feeling that the deluge is yet to occur on the SS SnObama.

PS - Speaking of deluge, we’re bracing for Tropical Storm (perhaps Hurricane) Edouard next morning at dawn. I’ll send out e-mails to the regulars to keep them posted.

  16. How bout the MSM during the week that BHO lost a 9 point lead and is now trailing. The whole past week was a lovefest for Sen Obama. Most leftist media channels described the McCain campaign in disaray. Now the foreign trip where BHO criticised his country, he didn’t vist wounded troops, and two small tongue in cheek ads by McCain. And poof…..it’s all gone. This truly is the political example of “the emperor has no clothes”. It may be an historical event, taught by poly sci professors for years to come. How to nominate a totally unqualified candidate in a short primary campaign. Only to be anniliated in the general.
It is possible that Obama may now have to throw a hail mary with his VP pick. Hillary anyone? His trouble is, now that he is trailing, she may not want to go down with him. How’d you like to be a Democrat. In an obvious anti Republican year, you can’t even beat a 72 year old white guy. And by the way, where’s the proof now that this is going to be a Congressional Democrat blowout too? With a 9-14% approval rating, I think Princess Pelosi’s over stating her possible gains. It is in the Republicans interest to have the Dems predicting a 40 seat House gain and a 9 seat Senate gain. Anything less and they can crow. Today a Dem was predicting possibly winning Montana and North Carolina, at some point you got to ask em what they are smoking.

  18. #8: Oh, Lord, ILC! You were NOT KIDDING about Fred Hiatt’s editorial today. What a pathetic joke! Now I can’t wait for the debates–just so I can read Hiatt’s columns after McCain wipes the floor with Obama. He is going to be doing some spectacular verbal gymnastics trying to spin them into Obama victories. My favorite part:

“But by questioning Obama’s substantiveness, McCain has begun to diminish the advantage of Obama’s skill in rhetoric; and besides, there’s no reason to think Obama — who, after all, is deft, eloquent, quick-thinking and supremely well informed — wouldn’t be every bit as skilled in town halls as McCain. The forums would return attention to the issues, where Obama believes he has a clear advantage. And if McCain sought to use them for personal attacks, he would at least have to bear full personal responsibility for doing so.”

Supremely well informed?! Quick-thinking?! I suppose these are the skills that led to Obama’s tire-inflation solution to the energy crisis. Unbelievable.

  19. RealClearPolitics.com has been tracking 8 key battleground states on it’s front page. 7 of the 8 are states Bush 43 won in 2004 and have been viewed as up for grabs. Now that McCain is surging ahead, if you count in the 5% overage Obama typically polls…..all 8 of those states now look like wins for McCain. Real Clear should now begin to list 5 Kerry states that Obama potentially is going to lose. Like NH, PA , MI, WI, MN. All of those, Vietnam War vet, John Fitzgerald Kerry won by 3.5% or less.

  21. #15 - Jeb, here in the Allen Parkway area, we’ve got rain and some slight wind at 9:45 am CDT, but nothing serious yet. No flooding yet along Buffalo Bayou.

Edouard came ashore 45 miles east of here in Anahuac, TX. We’re going to get some serious rain today. No power outtages yet.

Getting back on thread - anyone watch Hannity & Colmes last night regarding the DNC’s current case of “buyer’s remorse?” And as Gene pointed out, both RCP and Rasmussen have the electoral count currently favoring McCain.

Sean is right - we’re going forward, eyes wide open, still on the prize and keeping away from self-hating Americans like snObama and his ilk.

  29. #26 - Nationwide polls don’t mean flip at election time. In case you forgot all about the 2000 race, the electorate is counted in each of the 50 states and DC and the winner of the popular vote in each state takes those electoral votes.

So yes, Kerry was leading Bush nationally…and Gore was leading Bush nationally…yet he beat them both in the Electoral College.

The reason why it was put in place was so that large population centers would not control the Executive branch. It gives those of us who live in “flyover country” a voice at the ballot box.

Just thought I’d point that out.

    Peter H.

  30. the electorate is counted in each of the 50 states and DC and the winner of the popular vote in each state takes those electoral votes.

Not necessarily. Maine and Nebraska distribute their electoral votes by congressional district.

    Comment by V the K — August 6, 2008 @ 11:40 am - August 6, 2008

  31. #30 - Oops, you are correct V. I stand corrected. It’s been a while, however, since either state has split their electoral votes.

Rumor had it that Colorado was considering the same thing - but the voters rejected that amendment to the state constitution.

Also, in 2000 a lone DC elector cast a “protest vote” against Gore because DC could not have any voting representation in Congress. Whatever.

  32. I think a similar thing was up for a vote in California. It would have been nice if California were actually competitive, but the usual coalition of Democrats and RINO’s torpedoed it.

    Comment by V the K — August 6, 2008 @ 12:09 pm - August 6, 2008

  33. It was. The DNC screamed bloody murder and sent out their usual coterie of race slaves to argue against it — mainly because, if California divided electoral votes as do Maine and Nebraska, the inland portions of the state would counterbalance entire Northeastern blue enclaves.
