It was. The DNC screamed bloody murder and sent out their usual coterie of race slaves to argue against it -- mainly because, if California divided electoral votes as do Maine and Nebraska, the inland portions of the state would counterbalance entire Northeastern blue enclaves.

I think a similar thing was up for a vote in California. It would have been nice if California were actually competitive, but the usual coalition of Democrats and RINO's torpedoed it.

#30 - Oops, you are correct V. I stand corrected. It's been a while, however, since either state has split their electoral votes.

Rumor had it that Colorado was considering the same thing - but the voters rejected that amendment to the state constitution.

Also, in 2000 a lone DC elector cast a "protest vote" against Gore because DC could not have any voting representation in Congress. Whatever.

Peter H.

the electorate is counted in each of the 50 states and DC and the winner of the popular vote in each state takes those electoral votes.

Not necessarily. Maine and Nebraska distribute their electoral votes by congressional district.

#26 - Nationwide polls don't mean flip at election time. In case you forgot all about the 2000 race, the electorate is counted in each of the 50 states and DC and the winner of the popular vote in each state takes those electoral votes.

So yes, Kerry was leading Bush nationally...and Gore was leading Bush nationally...yet he beat them both in the Electoral College.

The reason why it was put in place was so that large population centers would not control the Executive branch. It gives those of us who live in "flyover country" a voice at the ballot box.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Peter H.

And, just as McCain gets traction... He steps in it, echoing Left rhetoric and reminding us of everything there is to hate about McCain's own stupid, quasi-socialist views:

At work in Downtown Houston right now. So far, Edouard has been nothing more than a bit of rain and a little wind. We've seen worse thunderstorms this year.

That said, how pathetic is it that the "Lightworker" (or is that the Light Worker) with all the media outlest deeply in the tank for him cannot finish off the Old Guy That No One Likes? The Messiah truly has no clothes.

#15 - Jeb, here in the Allen Parkway area, we've got rain and some slight wind at 9:45 am CDT, but nothing serious yet. No flooding yet along Buffalo Bayou.

Edouard came ashore 45 miles east of here in Anahuac, TX. We're going to get some serious rain today. No power outtages yet.

Getting back on thread - anyone watch Hannity & Colmes last night regarding the DNC's current case of "buyer's remorse?" And as Gene pointed out, both RCP and Rasmussen have the electoral count currently favoring McCain.

Sean is right - we're going forward, eyes wide open, still on the prize and keeping away from self-hating Americans like snObama and his ilk.

Peter H.

RealClearPolitics.com has been tracking 8 key battleground states on it's front page. 7 of the 8 are states Bush 43 won in 2004 and have been viewed as up for grabs. Now that McCain is surging ahead, if you count in the 5% overage Obama typically polls.....all 8 of those states now look like wins for McCain. Real Clear should now begin to list 5 Kerry states that Obama potentially is going to lose. Like NH, PA , MI, WI, MN. All of those, Vietnam War vet, John Fitzgerald Kerry won by 3.5% or less.

#8: Oh, Lord, ILC! You were NOT KIDDING about Fred Hiatt's editorial today. What a pathetic joke! Now I can't wait for the debates--just so I can read Hiatt's columns after McCain wipes the floor with Obama. He is going to be doing some spectacular verbal gymnastics trying to spin them into Obama victories. My favorite part:

"But by questioning Obama's substantiveness, McCain has begun to diminish the advantage of Obama's skill in rhetoric; and besides, there's no reason to think Obama -- who, after all, is deft, eloquent, quick-thinking and supremely well informed -- wouldn't be every bit as skilled in town halls as McCain. The forums would return attention to the issues, where Obama believes he has a clear advantage. And if McCain sought to use them for personal attacks, he would at least have to bear full personal responsibility for doing so."

Supremely well informed?! Quick-thinking?! I suppose these are the skills that led to Obama's tire-inflation solution to the energy crisis. Unbelievable.

How bout the MSM during the week that BHO lost a 9 point lead and is now trailing. The whole past week was a lovefest for Sen Obama. Most leftist media channels described the McCain campaign in disaray. Now the foreign trip where BHO criticised his country, he didn't vist wounded troops, and two small tongue in cheek ads by McCain. And poof.....it's all gone. This truly is the political example of "the emperor has no clothes". It may be an historical event, taught by poly sci professors for years to come. How to nominate a totally unqualified candidate in a short primary campaign. Only to be anniliated in the general.
It is possible that Obama may now have to throw a hail mary with his VP pick. Hillary anyone? His trouble is, now that he is trailing, she may not want to go down with him. How'd you like to be a Democrat. In an obvious anti Republican year, you can't even beat a 72 year old white guy. And by the way, where's the proof now that this is going to be a Congressional Democrat blowout too? With a 9-14% approval rating, I think Princess Pelosi's over stating her possible gains. It is in the Republicans interest to have the Dems predicting a 40 seat House gain and a 9 seat Senate gain. Anything less and they can crow. Today a Dem was predicting possibly winning Montana and North Carolina, at some point you got to ask em what they are smoking.

How bout the MSM during the week that BHO lost a 9 point lead and is now trailing. The whole past week was a lovefest for Sen Obama. Most leftist media channels described the McCain campaign in disaray. Now the foreign trip where BHO criticised his country, he didn’t vist wounded troops, and two small tongue in cheek ads by McCain. And poof…..it’s all gone. This truly is the political example of “the emperor has no clothes”.
How’d you like to be a Democrat. In an obvious anti Republican year, you can’t even beat a 72 year old white guy. And by the way, where’s the proof now that this is going to be a Congressional Democrat blowout too? With a 9-14% approval rating, I think Princess Pelosi’s over stating her possible gains. It is in the Republicans interest to have the Dems predicting a 40 seat House gain and a 9 seat Senate gain. Anything less and they can crow. Today a Dem was predicting possibly winning Montana and North Carolina, at some point you got to ask em what they are smoking.
