<blockquote>post nationalist olympics?

Comment by American Elephant — August 10, 2008 @ 8:59 pm - August 10, 2008<</blockquote>"Don't question me Eddy!"

Yes, that's what I said, how's this for a demonstration:
<blockquote>Collinsworth: Where does the patriotism come from inside of you? Historically, what is it?

Kobe: Well, you know it’s just our country, it’s... we believe is the greatest country in the world. It has given us so many great opportunities, and it’s just a sense of pride that you have; that you say "You know what? Our country is the best!"

Collinsworth: <b>Is that a ‘cool’ thing to say, in this day and age? That you love your country, and that you’re fighting for the red, white and blue? It seems sort of like a day gone by(?)</b>

Kobe: No, it’s a cool thing for me to say. I feel great about it, and I’m not ashamed to say it. I mean, this is a tremendous honor.</blockquote>

He says while wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt and his Fidel cap. The Chi-Comms are the type that are heros of the liberal left. These are folks who fund the Clintons and get rewarded with missile technology. They're just like your buddies Chavez, Castro, "Uncle Joe", and even Alger Hiss.

Give us a freakin' break, Pinko. They're just keeping Tibet progressive.

I have a very simple observation to make; if the rest of the world hates the Bush administration as much as Kevin claims, why, then, are there far more people who want to get into this country than can be handled annually?

After all, people weren't exactly tearing down the gates to get into the Soviet Union, or Hitlerite Germany, both of which Kevin and the liberal left liken the United States and the Bush administration towards being.

No, the problem here is that Kevin and the Democrat Party are using the typical logic of their drug-pusher constituency, trying to argue that you should get whacked out of your mind because the "other kids" are doing it.

Thanks, Sean. I'll admit that I've heard very little of Matt Lauer during the coverage. Even during the parades, I wasn't always listening to the commentators, and just trying to watch some of the countries they breezed through after the commercial breaks (as if they couldn't start where they left off even though this coverage was taped). So it's possible I've missed the examples of unwarranted communist worship that were mentioned. I may lean left, but I have no love of communism, human rights abuses, and supression of freedoms by China or any other nation.

I find it hard to believe that Matt Lauer or anyone else would be surprised of the Chinese people's reaction to the U.S. team. I have no idea whether the Chinese citizens like or dislike our current administration, but it was no surprise to me that they would applaud our team when they were announced, out of respect for our citizens, our ideals, and our athletes.

I initially advocated Bush boycotting the opening ceremony, but I think it was best that he went. He was able to meet Hu and expressed his concerns, and I don't think that would have been as effective if he didn't show up for the opening ceremonies.

I have to admit that while NBC's blatant Commie-worship during the Opening Ceremonies left a lot to be desired, I have to say this after watching a lot of live & taped coverage:

1. In the events where the Bush family were in attendance, not one color commentator/analyst made anything remotely sounding like a snarky comment or politically-tainted observation.

2. Bob Costas' interview with Bush was much better than anything Couric, Williams or Gibson could have done. He treated the President with respect, he didn't talk down to him and kept it all about sports.

3. In the photo-ops that NBC carried of Bush with the athletes (men's BB, women's VB, swim team etc.), they did not make any acid-dipped remarks or comment about anything that would resemble a gaffe or lack of Presidential finesse.

Actually, my favorite one of all the photo-ops was that female volleyball player who actually wanted Bush to "spank her rump" for luck. I pointed out to Hubby that if it were Clinton, she'd be looking for a restraining order instead.

Fortunately, Bush being a Texas gentleman, declined and merely gave her a pat on the small of her back. And with a big-a$$ grin, too.

Looks like the VB player didn't mind being handled by a Republican. Then again, she wouldn't have to worry about him cheating on his cancer-stricken wife (whose illness was in remission, of course).

Regards,
Peter H.

#18: Pat, I think your discussion of these issues in #18 is very reasonable. I think this really is one of those situations where a hard-line stance (i.e. boycotts, etc.) would have been counter-productive at worst and a waste of time at best (not to mention a punishment felt primarily by U.S. athletes). Bush's presence and respect for the host country is one of those delicate diplomacy tasks that liberals claim to worship above all else, but he will not receive one syllable of credit from them for it, naturally. I WANT to denounce and despise China and its communist regime in unequivocal terms, but that wouldn't work as U.S. policy here because we have significant business interests that would be damaged (not to mention political interests as well). Plus, we can hardly expect that kind of stance from our government when Ahmadinejad is welcomed as "his excellency" at Columbia and given a column in Newsweek to denounce U.S. imperialism. I really don't know what the solution is for how the U.S. deals with China.

I think what's really pissing people off is that jack*ss Matt Lauer. He's a liberal, so naturally he is endlessly fascinated by (and approving of) ANYTHING that is different from America and its way of life. Thus, he ends up coming off like the worst kind of propagandist tool when talking about how deliriously HAPPY the Chinese people are with their "lot in life." His jazzy interview with that Chinese "professor" who he apparently didn't understand was an employee of the communist state education ministry was just ridiculous--the "ministry" couldn't have done any better if they had actually written Lauer's statements about the Chinese people regarding any hypothetical protesters as "party crashers" ruining China's "moment" on the world stage.

Lauer is good for one journalistic endeavor alone--the celebrity interview. During his sit-down last month with Denise Richards, I think those two actually TOUCHED SOULS. I had no idea what that horrible Charlie Sheen has put her through! He's Ryan Seacrest with a better wardrobe. Nothing more.

Bush’s presence and respect for the host country is one of those delicate diplomacy tasks that liberals claim to worship above all else, but he will not receive one syllable of credit from them for it, naturally. I WANT to denounce and despise China and its communist regime in unequivocal terms, but that wouldn’t work as U.S. policy here because we have significant business interests that would be damaged (not to mention political interests as well). Plus, we can hardly expect that kind of stance from our government when Ahmadinejad is welcomed as “his excellency” at Columbia and given a column in Newsweek to denounce U.S. imperialism. I really don’t know what the solution is for how the U.S. deals with China.

I think what’s really pissing people off is that jack*ss Matt Lauer. He’s a liberal, so naturally he is endlessly fascinated by (and approving of) ANYTHING that is different from America and its way of life. Thus, he ends up coming off like the worst kind of propagandist tool when talking about how deliriously HAPPY the Chinese people are with their “lot in life.” His jazzy interview with that Chinese “professor” who he apparently didn’t understand was an employee of the communist state education ministry was just ridiculous–the “ministry” couldn’t have done any better if they had actually written Lauer’s statements about the Chinese people regarding any hypothetical protesters as “party crashers” ruining China’s “moment” on the world stage.

Lauer is good for one journalistic endeavor alone–the celebrity interview. During his sit-down last month with Denise Richards, I think those two actually TOUCHED SOULS. I had no idea what that horrible Charlie Sheen has put her through! He’s Ryan Seacrest with a better wardrobe. Nothing more.

#15: You always know you’re dealing with a liberal when the comment bitches and complains about everything, while ostensibly advocating nothing. So now the story is that the left has been saying it’s not the U.S. that is hated throughout the world, only the current administration? They “look forward to a change”? (I guess the whole world is now in the tank for Obama, right?) Sorry, Kevin. You just made that up as you were typing it. For years, the left has been screaming that AMERICANS are hated, not just its current leadership. Trying to change that tune now would cause your last remaining bit of credibility to evaporate, if you actually had any left.

And as for China, do you not realize that you haven’t even taken a position in your comment? The best I can tell is that you’re calling Bush a hypocrite for being there at all and representing our country in the best possible light. But you also seem to be advocating communism (i.e., “if China is so disgusting…if China is such an awful place…”), or at least arguing that the country has been unfairly slandered by the generally-accepted Western perspective on China.

So, to recap your comment: (1) China’s great! If it weren’t, we wouldn’t be doing so much business there; or (2) China is horrible! Evil American capitalists are financing human rights abuses; or (3) Bush is horrible! So is China, since Bush is there right now; or (4) China is great! The Olympics wouldn’t be there if it were a bad place...etc.

As usual from a liberal: criticize everything; advocate nothing. I think this is that noble practice liberals call “raising awareness.” Completely useless. Nothing to see here.

China is "improving" incrementally in its human rights abuses, but only in the cities where they have largely lost the daily control of people. The closely controlled houtang neighborhood has given way to skyscrapers and apartments where the old commie "granny" is no longer the concierge checking on pregnancy, underground economy, political dissent and idleness.

These Olympics were funded by a government propaganda machine not seen since Hitler presented the Nazi Olympics.

So far as poor Kevin's addled "thoughts" on goods made in China, he seems to have missed the memo from Lord Barack about protectionism and returning manufacturing to the US no matter what the price to the American consumer.

NBC undoubtedly made a Faustian bargain with the commies in order to make wind fall profits that exceed an oil man's wildest dreams. (Certainly there will be calls to tax NBC from the libs.)

I have watched many hours of government produced "news" on the channels in English in China and they are remarkably happy, happy talk and free of anything that is unsettling.

Google has a lucrative deal with the commies which keeps the Chinese internet fairly safe from any "inconvenient truth."

The IOC might just as well be an arm of the UN. The each have the three monkeys as their symbol: See no evil, hear no evil and babble mindless propaganda.

Many news outlets loved Hitler's audacity and Mussolini's organization during the 1930's. Why should liberals, ever the closet commies, feel any different toward China. My, gosh, they still go to Jello over Castro and crumbling Cuba.

Will we have the great Venezuelan people's games for the next summer olympics? NBC and the Hollywood intelligentsia will be there to present it in living, HD focus and socialist colors.
