I say(type?) this the greatest of respect, but I hope last night will be the last time we get the McCain-as-POW speech in such detail. It’s been over-played, and once the GOP Convention’s over should be used as a footnote to his character, not a leitmotif. It’s become a campaign-crutch; like when Sen. McCain addressed the “how many houses” on Jay Leno by starting with 7-years in Hanoi. It came across as forced and clichÃ©d, it’s now time to tone it down….and move on.

If “Country First” is to be the theme of reform and change, it’s now time to look forwards…not back 35-years.

You must not have been watching the same speech. The audience erupted several times when he was talking about Palin. When he started talking about McCain, yes, you could hear a pin drop. It’s all old information for me. But when he said this, it really got to me:

“He cannot salute the flag of the country for which he sacrificed so much.”

P.S. Another factor is Hurricane Gustav. The country, and the convention, are still getting over that. The Gulf State delegations were absent. Etc.

The speech was a bit rough. But I didn’t consider the speech an attempt to get anyone “jazzed” about McCain. Just to tell the truth about him. Here’s what I mean.

The truth about McCain’s life, values, and experiences is just astounding. In fact: It’s humiliating to the rest of us. Not that it qualifies him to be President. Not that it means he’s always right. But you listen to it, and if you have any decency at all, you think “Oh… my… god. I’ve never done a single thing for this country, compared to this man.”

But it is the truth. He (or surrogate / Fred) is not telling it to humiliate you. It’s just reality. This country exists because of the heroes who have served it and made it happen. We are all ‘free riders’ on the John McCains of the world. Just a fact!

Now, how do you get people “jazzed” after telling jaw-dropping truths like that? You don’t. Not right away. You give people a day to recover, then bring on Sarah Palin.

I think it started off a little rough as well but once he hit his stride – he delivered. I know the speeches are written (not ad lib) but I think he spoke every word form the heart.

I always enjoy a Fred speech. I hope we hear more of him (he was my choice early on).

I’m loving these speeches! I had no idea about what McCain had gone through as a POW. No idea at all. My respect magnified after hearing about what had happened. I loved hearing from Joe Lieberman. I love his honesty.

Really, the speech seemed a little stilted. In fact, it was more defensive than offensive. It was a weak attempt to get viewers excited about McCain. As I watched the television set, I didn’t get the impression that the audience was all that jazzed up??

This was a GREAT address from a great American. Although McCain was not my first choice, his choice as Vice President was amazing. As I write this Lieberman is knocking them dead, that says it all.
