One Lesbian’s Journey: From Kucinich to McCain-Palin

September 6, 2008 by GayPatriotWest

A dear friend of mine, an outspoken and self-assured lesbian, writes (and with her permission I reprint):

have gone from Kucinich to obama {until the beiginning of this year-what an ass and an embarrassment!}  to Hillary to McCain/Palin…cannot believe that I am voting Repub for the first time in 30 yrs!!

Love that woman!!! Have brother up in Alaska….they really love her up there….

All I can say is that I’m delighted to be on the same side as this woman as we often spar on matters political.

She doesn’t mince her words nor hide her feelings. Despite her strong views, she’s not one of those people who judges your political views by the party to which you belong, but by the way you got there. She listens to her ideological adversaries.

I should know. When I came out to her as a Republican, she asked me tough questions, needled me about my views, but remained my friend.

Love Kucinich even though he has some questionable ideas. He is the guy I most trust out of all the republicans and democrats who ran this race.

For the lady’s email such a drastic change in political support in such a short amount of time makes me wonder. Did her views on social and economic issues change or did she just like the new candidate as a person.

Kucinich was the most pro-gay candidate in this election. A sharp contrast to Mccain who has been against many gay rights.

So, you don’t mind that Sarah Palin doesn’t value the love you may feel for your partner – and that she went ON RECORD supporting a bill that would deny you basic rights like health insurance and vistitation but was forced to vetoe it because it was unconstitutional?

    Congratulations on your newfound ignorance.

THAT is how we get things done and part of the ideals that I think the McCain/Palin promotes. I hope there are plenty more like your friend. Not only to select the right people for the White House, but to help people learn to discuss politics, and to “engage in the process”

#1, you hit the nail on the head. In order for any minority group to to get the best political pull, one must be flexible enough to REACH ACROSS THE ISLE. Most of my friends here in New York City would rather drive nails into their eyes than even think of listening to, let alone voting for, a Republican. When 90% of any minority group throws their unconditional support behind the Democratic Party simply because they’re Dems, they forfeit all potential political leverage. Despite how many times the Democrats betray their trust, groups will vote for them because they believe that they have nowhere else to run.

It’s not dissimilar to the syndrome an elephant suffers: In India, elephants are conditioned to park their massive bodies from the moment they are babies. When they are very young, they are kept in check with a leash that has a wooden stake tied at the end shoved into the ground. When that same elephant becomes full grown, its master can park it by shoving the same spike attached to its rope into the ground. Why? Because the elephant has been conditioned to believe that it can’t break away from the small stake from the days of its infancy. It has no ability to question whether it can break away because it has been conditioned to believe that the possibility simply doesn’t exist. Pretty much like they way many minority groups vote Democrat.

Conservatives will consider voting for a Democrat if they believed that the candidate shared enough of their values and thought they could do a half-decent job. While most Democrats vote Democrat because they are conditioned to believe that that simply have nowhere else to run.

I talked to a guy I know in Michigan, gay and very liberal, and he surprised me with the news that he is voting for McCain. In his case, it’s because Obama reminds him too much of Michigan’s disastrous Democrat governor Jenny Granholm and Detroit’s disastrous Democrat mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Just when I thought it was hopeless for liberals to learn from their mistakes…

Obama: Rose by getting along with the machine… votes ‘present’… has accomplished nothing except to sell himself, with a new autobiography every decade past his twenties… and as his first major Presidential decision, gives us Joe Biden, the ultimate Washington blowhard / insider, a man who has also not accomplished much except to enrich his Party’s favored groups, including his own son’s lobbying firm.

McCain: Rose by annoying people… criticizes Bush… has accomplished some questionable reforms, but landmark reforms nonetheless, bearing his name… and as his first major Presidential decision, gives us “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington”, a woman who rose by attacking her own party and cleaning up its corruption, and who incidentally possesses more Executive experience than Biden and Obama combined.

Which is the machine ticket here, and which the reform ticket? Which *really* represents citizen-driven Change, and which is really politics-as-usual?

Yes… but, if people push back on that, McCain’s reform argument is something of a boomerang. His signature piece of legislation is McCain-Feingold, which was passed ostensibly to ‘clean up Washington.’ Yet, six years on, Washington is as corrupt as ever, so corrupt that McCain himself is running against the corruption in Washington. And earmarks and pork barrel spending are worse than ever.

In this case, McCain’s signature reform accomplishment has been a total failure. He shouldn’t harp on it too much.

Exactly. A ‘questionable’ reform as I said… but… at least he tried. What’s Obama done?

earmarks and pork barrel spending are worse than ever

Now that is *not* McCain’s fault. I blame Trent Lott, Tom DeLay and George Bush (for not using his veto pen, or threatening to use it, in the first six years of his Administration).

Actually I should have said it this way:

Look, ILC, I am just trying to make fair-minded criticism. McCain-Feingold is an example of the McCain approach to policy and his governing philosophy, and its failure is a fair topic for discussion.

It’s equally fair to discuss the policies Obama has supported and continues to support that are worse, unfortunately. His support of the Fairness Doctrine is a worse restriction on free speech than McCain-Feingold, for example. And Obama designating a million-dollar earmark for the hospital that promoted his wife, and millions more for community activist organizations with which he is personally connected speaks worse of his ethics.

Unfortunately, no candidate who is both ethical and grounded in a ruling philosophy that consistently protects free speech, and consistently makes life harder for career politicians, is running at the top of either ticket. It’s a lesser-of-two-evils election.

How true. Yesterday CNN tried to portray black Republicans as being stuck in a “dilemma” re whom to vote for: as if reality = party vs. race loyalty. As if the GOP hasn’t already offered (and benefitted) from achievement by black Americans. As if proud, black delegates didn’t attend the RNC. In the 60’s and 70’s the Democrat liberals were distinct from the liberal left radicals. Democrat liberals had “socialist” ideas, but not socialist ideals. It was possible to chat about and debate the various aspects of “The Great Society” plan. Nixon picked up on some of the ideas and helped them become fact.

Teddy White wrote a book every four years entitled “The Making of the President, 19..” White called himself a “second look” liberal. He explained that it is necessary to revisit your ideas and to admit mistakes in order to reassert and strengthen the good aspects. I admire that type of honesty. And, in fact, I can say that I never met a liberal idea that didn’t have some spark of merit.

But, the Leahy, Schumer, Reid, Pelosi, Durbin, Biden, Boxer, Wexler, Waxman, Dingall, Conyers, Waters, etc. type of liberal is of the slash and burn school of political thuggery. These are people who will not cross the aisle and, in fact, will block the aisle.

I believe that McCain and Palin will force these people out into the open and put pressure on them to change their game plans. Reagan did it with his Congress.

I never made it through watching “The Gangs of New York.” But I think the KOS kids and loons on the radical left are more motivated by bricks, slime and poison than anything resembling a common union. The gay left and code pink are connected at the hip and can not inspire a dialog that is useful to them or anyone else. They are haters, victims and clowns.

Conservatives and liberals need to focus the agenda on what can and needs to be done. For Obama, that is an endless laundry list of grand schemes and petty gripes.

McCain/Palin bring an adult vision to the table: “this is where we are, this is what is happening, let’s start the hard work of solving problems.” Economy, Education, Terrorism, Access to Health Care, International Affairs. There is plenty enough to fill up anyone’s agenda. We don’t need to be dreaming up landscaping for our castles in the air.

    2. Black male + conservative views +/- Republican affiliation = UNCLE TOM or HOUSE SLAVE or OREO
    3. Black female + conservative views +/- Republican affiliation = AUNT JEMIMA
    4. White female + conservative views + grassroots husband + 5 children (e.g. huge carbon footprint) + conservative views = HITLER.

    However…
Barack Obama = Abraham Lincoln = Ghandi = FDR = JFK = Jesus = Martin Luther King.

    1 woman x 5 kids – job – husband + Democrat affiliation = disenfranchised.

The possibility that any same woman or any minority would share conservative views and values is simply beyond a Lefty’s scope. To them, it’s makes as much sense as trying to explain what’s North of the North Pole.

I don’t agree with everything the Republican platform stands for, but I disagree with just about everything the democrats are about. I love my country, and my place in life has nothing to do with my sexuality. It has to do with my own decisions and actions – something the democrats can’t seem the fathom. Unless you’re a victim, you’re of no use to them, especially if you’re a “minority” who doesn’t play the victim card. I am an American, period, and am grateful, each and everyday, of that. I don’t remember the details so much, but I remember that it was very quiet and respectful. Somebody told me the other option is for one person to take the flag out in the woods and bury it, but I’ve not seen or heard of that since.

(I know the type… used to be one… so yes, I can spot ’em.)

As far as doing homework goes: Palin vetoed a bill that sought to block the state from giving public employee benefits such as health insurance to same-sex couples.

Saying, as you did, that she vetoed the bill makes it sound like a willing act –or like its some grand proof of her treating LGBT individuals with the same fair hand as Biden, who openly stated during the debate that he supported the same constitutional rights — , when the truth of the matter is that she did veto a bill in Alaska that would have denied health benefits to partners of state employees, she did so at the urging of her attorney general, who argued that signing the bill would have been a violation of the state constitution as interpreted by Alaska’s highest court and she would have gotten called on it.

I am 53, a lesbian, and always lean, for obvious reasons,
    toward the liberal/left.
