Bleg on the Gipper
I recall reading that up until the 1980 presidential campaign, Ronald Reagan gave many (most?) of his speeches off-the-cuff, with only a few 3″ by 5″ cards highlighting the main points he had wanted to hit. (I was able to confirm that he gave at least one speech, his very well received address to the Republican National Convention in 1976 “without notes.”
Otherwise, various google searches on this have come up blank. Can any reader confirm this for me? Thanks.

Absolutely true. My boyfriend was a member of a conservative group on the UCLA campus and saw Reagan speak a couple of times. Notes only. He also met him at a meet and greet for student volunteers and says it was the most amazing thing he ever saw. Reagan apologized for being late(and had a typically funny explanation which eludes me now) and was behind schedule but didn’t leave until he had talked to everyone who wanted to say hello. And that, apparently, was everyone.

From a Commentary article by Michael J. Lewis called “When presidents speak” (Jun 2001. Vol. 111, Iss. 6; pg. 48):
I’ll shoot you an email with the whole article.
