Other Obama supporters have threatened critics with criminal prosecution. In September, St. Louis County Circuit Attorney Bob McCulloch and St. Louis City Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce warned citizens that they would bring criminal libel prosecutions against anyone who made statements against Mr. Obama that were “false.” I had been under the impression that the Alien and Sedition Acts had gone out of existence in 1801-’02. Not so, apparently, in metropolitan St. Louis. Similarly, the Obama campaign called for a criminal investigation of the American Issues Project when it ran ads highlighting Mr. Obama’s ties to Mr. Ayers.

These attempts to shut down political speech have become routine for liberals. Congressional Democrats sought to reimpose the “fairness doctrine” on broadcasters, which until it was repealed in the 1980s required equal time for different points of view. The motive was plain: to shut down the one conservative-leaning communications medium, talk radio. Liberal talk-show hosts have mostly failed to draw audiences, and many liberals can’t abide having citizens hear contrary views.

I have been for being critical of every President we have had my entire adult life. Obama, should he be elected, should be no different. Let’s just pray that whomever is elected gives us far less to be critical about than this administration!

I give you Teddy Roosevelt’s opinion on the matter:

“The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else.”

Tyrants always silence the voices of opposition. Chavez, Putin, and Mugabe all shut down opposition newspapers and broadcasters. Obama will try to silence talk radio through the Fairness Doctrine, go after conservative blogs with the FEC, and sic the Justice Department on those who bankroll conservative causes. And he will do it all while smiling and denying he’s censoring anyone, just trying to ensure “fairness” and “end the divisiveness that keeps the country from unifying.” The MSM… along with torrentprime and Mr. Mod … will smile and repeat the talking points.

After all. if people are willing to say that redistributing wealth isn’t socialism, it’s no greater stretch to say that silencing critics isn’t censorship.

But I also think there’s a lot of ingenuity on the right, and we will find a way around these barriers. Just like the samizdata found away to get out the truth in the days of the Soviet Union.

Right, VtK: cause a slight hike in taxes for rich people clearly changes the complete nature of our entire political system from capitalism to socialism. LOL. Just remember: nationalization of the banks was done by the Republicans. But I suppose that’s a talking point.

@2: Tell me, is that the patriot (sic) thing to do only in the “real” parts of the country? Or only in the “pro-American” parts of the country? I swear, it’s like the GOP is a parody of itself these days.

BTW: The Obamunists have already been cracking down on dissident blogs.

And torrentprime must really suck at math to believe a “slight hike in taxes” on the top 5% of taxpayers can pay for Obama’s trillions of dollars in new spending: adding 47 million people to Medicare, hundreds of billions in infrastructure spending, a new college tuition entitlement, federalized daycare (a.k.a. universal pre-K), and government checks to the 45% of Americans who already pay no Federal income taxes.

Actually, it is. All the people who troll AoSHQ, Discarded Lies, and Moonbattery have repeated it over the last couple of weeks.

What they don’t mention is Barney “Elmer Fudd” Frank going on TV and saying, “Who cares about deficits? Spend, baby, spend! We’ll screw the rich with tax increases later!”

##7-8: Right on, V the K. If torrentslime is so convinced that Obama’s tax plan will barely register a blip on the economy’s EKG, then why does he have to lie about the details of the proposal? Typical–he’s either lying about Obama’s tax plan or like 99.99% of Obama’s supporters, he just can’t be bothered with the pesky details of what it will actually entail.

So, which is it torrentslime? Lies or willful ignorance?

The only thing that Bush’s bailout of the banks proves is that he’s not the fire-breathing free-market absolutist the left has always claimed he is. In terms of domestic policy, Bush has governed from the center-left, including vast new health care entitlements, and huge expansions of domestic spending that conservatives broadly opposed.

You know why Bush’s numbers suck? It’s because the right opposes him as much as the left does. Although, we manage to do so without calling for his assassination or execution for “war crimes.”

One thing I find constant when posting comments to blogs/newspaper articles is that when you confront a Mr. Obama supporter with a request for information backing up their support on a particular subject, I get one of two responses :

    1) They disappear
    2) They tell me they aren’t going to do the “research” for me and I should stop being lazy.

I love the #2 response because I never post facts without a backup link.

One does not need to harken back to the Alien and Sedition Acts, most of the laws that that liberal paradign Woodrew Wilson used to jail and silence those opposed to his administration’s WW1 policies…or that he or his wife just didn’t like…are still on the Federal books.

I also think its very patriotic to question the other candidate, especially when his running mate seems woefully unaware of the actual constitutional duties of the Vice-President of the United Sates.

  17. GayPatriotWest says

    October 22, 2008 at 9:04 pm - October 22, 2008

Excellent point, Kevin, excellent. After 36 years in the Senate, Joe Biden did not know those duties and contended falsely that they were spelled out in the First Article of the constitution which he thought referred to the executive branch when, in fact, it defines the role of the legislative.

He also thought that all the VP does is to cast the tie-breaking vote, but the constitution gives him more responsibility than that.

Erik, thanks for meeting my challenge by providing the links, but you wrote, “When the Democrats dared question President Bush, conservatives just called us traitors and un-American.” Unfortunately, in none of the articles you linked (I did not follow the one to Thinkprogress because it’s a left-wing site), did conservatives call Democrats traitors for daring question the president (as you put it).

They faulted them for not supporting the troops in time of war.

    Huge difference there. Huge.

When the Democrats dared question President Bush, conservatives just called us traitors and un-American. LOL

Thing is, liberals didn’t question. They out and out LIED and hid behind their own bastardized definition of patriotism. They even went so far as to use a quote by Howard Zinn and attributed it to Thomas Jefferson, until the proles realized the lie.

If you really want to get into a pissing match, too tired right now, I’d be happy to show you were liberals HAVE worked slavishly to undermine the country, Bush and our own solidiers. I can start with the al-Qaeda times, the words of Jack Murtha, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and include the bills they put forward.

Just ask yourself if you really want to dance and push the issue.

BTW, you should remember that dissent is only patriotic if the dissenter is a patriot. Otherwise, it’s just plain treason.

You know how those paranoid gays contended that Bush was building concentration camps in the Northwest to intern gay people? Well, it turns out Barack Obama’s buddies and mentors had a similar idea.

From Moonbaterry: Weather Underground Plotted American Genocide:

Larry Grathwol, who joined the Weather Underground as a undercover law enforcement agent:

I brought up the subject of what’s going to happen after we take over the government. … They also believed that their immediate responsibility would be to protect against what they called the counter-revolution. They felt that this counter-revolution could best be guarded against by creating and establishing re-education centers in the Southwest, where we would take all of the people who needed to be re-educated into the new way of thinking and teach them how things were going to be. I asked, well what is going to happen to those people that we can’t re-educate that are die-hard capitalists? The reply was that they would have to be eliminated. When I pursued this further they estimated that they would have to eliminate 25 million people in these re-education centers. When I say eliminate, I mean kill … 25 million people.

I want you to imagine sitting in a room with 25 people, most of which have graduate degrees from Columbia and other well-known educational centers, and hear them figuring out the logistics for the elimination of 25 million people. And they were dead serious.

Social Justice, as defined by Barack Obama’s people.
