Just so that clears up any misunderstanding among my readers.
And yes, I did waver toward the end, but took the image of my friends Leesa and Jane into the voting booth with me. These two ladies get what marriage is.
And why did I waver? Three reasons:
- I wanted to overturn the state Supreme Court decision
- I was frustrated at the disrespect many on the “No” campaign showed for supporters of traditional marriage
- I respect that traditional understanding; gender difference has long defined the institution
I would rather the legislature had decided this after asking the people to repeal Prop. 22. But, if we vote today to defeat 8, we will have effectively repealed 22. And the legislature has voted.
This is why the general public will never support our lifestyle – we allow it to cloud our minds. Activist judges overruled the will of the vast majority of Californians who reject the homosexual lifestyle and forcing young children to accept it in our failing public schools.
The fact that you consider yourself a Republican and a Conservative, and then vote against the people and for the insane activist judges confirms to the average voter that homosexuals can’t be trusted. When will we mature enough as a community to vote our conscience and not demand special rights?
I’m saddened that you chose to let your sexual practices and erotic impulses overpower your conscience and reject common sense. The glbt community will never succeed in being mainstreamed until they show they can vote on issues without always making their sexual preference and bedroom behavior their highest priority. Gaypatriot, some day you will realize that there are many things more important than your right to sexually penetrate another man.
You are truly sick. Have you even read any of his posts regarding gay relationships? I have read this blog for years and GPW is no libertine.
Well, I feel the same, but for a different prop-prop 2. I am all for animal WELFARE, but I think this may go too far. So, I will not decide until I get to the polling place in a while. BTW, do not be fooled by exit “polls”. Remember, in some early exit “polling”, some how it never rounded up to 100%.
I have to say that even if one is against Proposition 8, it is a good thing that there is a Proposition 8. After all, one of the greatest complaints has been that gay marriage was thrust upon the public by courts. By having a Proposition 8, it gives the public a chance to vote yes or no on the topic. Whatever the outcome, it’s one decided by the general public, not one dictated by judges.
One thing that needs to be asked to Prop 8 supporters:
Would you accept gay marriage if it was made legal by the legislature or “the will of the voters” (a synonym for mob tyranny)?
I just voted “no” on 8 as well – but I confess to wavering a little as Dan did – especially after seeing that awful ad showing the Mormon missionaries searching the lesbian couple’s house in search of their marriage license. I found it offensive. Was this ad secretly paid for by the pro-8 people?
#1: it’s obvious that you don’t understand that gay couples are fully capable of loving and caring for each other in many ways that have nothing to do with “erotic impulses”? What an asinine thing to write.
Assuming you’re married, Adrian, is it because of your “erotic impulses”? Or because of a mutual desire to care for and grow old with each other? Do you subscribe to an approved list of “sexual practices”?
I respect marriage as an institution vital to a civilized society and a loving marriage provides the best environment for raising children. Allowing gays to marry doesn’t make any of that less true.
Perhaps straight people should take a look in the mirror if they have so much concern for “the children”.
I’m glad you voted no on 8 and you did so for one of the major reasons to support marriage equality- life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (as evidenced by the image of your friends).
Personally, I find your 3 reasons to be somewhat lame. In the first 2, you wanted to vote Yes, simply to “get at” groups you don’t like. Casting a vote, no matter what your choice or the side of the issue, should be done based on what you as citizen and human being want not only for your country, but you know and feel is the right thing to do.
[Look, I’m just being honest here. I realized the morning of Election Day that was a terrible reason to vote on the initiative, the second reason, that is. The first is not lame, not at all..]
Your 3rd choice doesn’t make much sense. What about other “traditions” that have fallen by the wayside? How about things like the outlawing of interracial marriage, outlawing of the mingling of races, slavery? All of these had an institutional difference – the color of people’s skins. And just as the color of one’s skin doesn’t make a difference in who you love, the gender of each person in a relationship doesn’t matter either.
[Um, do you even what I write on marriage? Interracial marriage is a statutory creation. The definition of marriage, as I said above, is based on gender difference. I guess you’re not here to even try to understand me. –Dan]
No on Prop 8 is about giving people, whether straight or gay, the right to marry (or not) the one they love. Gay Patriot West, I’m glad that you voted no on this proposition. I’m sure it was a difficult decision to make, and you voted on principle, even if it meant facing possible backlash from your readers. I admire you for that.
kudos to you dan. i admire your strength, courage and conviction. you are an honorable man to support your friends even in the face of the personal conflict that you have expressed.
Just wanted to say thanks for voting no. Not sure how that question is going to turn out, but thank you for voting no!
I voted no as well. I wasn’t going to let liberal arrogance sway my vote out of spite. I have no personal stake in this, being straight, but I hope prop 8 fails, and gay couples will continue to have the right to marry.
Well it passed. Chickens in CA now have more rights than I do. I wonder if the “majority” will let me pick out what color carpet to put in the closet since that is where they want to put me. Anyway hurray for mob rule! I will just sit here quietly now waiting for someone to give me my equal rights.
That’s a preposterous thing to say, Adrian. When you vote on a ballot proposition, you are “the people.” Whatever your vote, you are affirming the voice of the people by the act of voting.
Dave–the exit polls give us hope, young voters favored the measure by a margin of 63-37.
Oh lord Dave.
Nobody has forced you back in the closet. No one has said you cant spend your life with whomever you wish. No ne is preventing you from drawing up contracts, holding a ceremony or even getting a pastor or rabbi to officiate. No one is even preventing you from entering the institution of marriage except for you. What they did was say that male-female couples do something unique for society that same sex couples cannot and thus should continue being uniquely regocnized for it.
AAhh thank you Mr Elephant for showing me the error of my ways. Damn equal rights, I should know better. Separate but equal….yeah that’s right….I will shut up now and just be grateful the majority of fair all knowing mob allows me even that. Dumb Gay that I am. I will go back to thinking about which trick I am going to hook up with, interior design and the fate of Project Runway.
The people have over-ruled the judges. It’s a good thing.
Get off the cross Dave,
We need the wood for heating here in Ohio.
Livewire #16 – Especially since President Obama told the SF Chronicle earlier this year of his active intention to destroy the coal industry and send energy prices sky-high. This’ll be “fun”.
Dumb Gay that I am. I will go back to thinking about which trick I am going to hook up with, interior design and the fate of Project Runway.
Perhaps if you had spent less time demonstrating to the populace that that’s all gay liberals like yourself are capable of doing, they would have looked more favorably upon you.
When you grow up and act like an adult, you’ll have adult responsibilities. But as long as you and your fellow liberal gays use your sexual orientation as an excuse for promiscuity, shallowness, and general irresponsibility, you’ll be treated accordingly.
You know what NDF I don’t care. I am a liberal and proud of it. I will not be shamed into thinking I am a second class citizen. So you go off to your cocktail parties with your Republican friends who “accept you” as long as you don’t ask for equal rights. I will stay here in the trenches demanding we all be treated equally.
ILC, Believe me I know. I benefit from an excess of insulation, but my domestic partner doesn’t so I’m comfortable shirtless in 60 degree rooms and she’s freezing. Winter’s not going to be fun.
Dave, down in the trenches… so much innuendo, so little bandwidth.
I will not be shamed into thinking I am a second class citizen.
You already whine time and time again about how you ARE a second-class citizen.
I, on the other hand, think I am nothing of the sort, am quite actualized and pleased with what I have, thank you, and am quite annoyed by spoiled, bratty little children like yourself who insist on making everyone else share your imaginary misery.
The fact that you think yourself worthless without marriage is a commentary on your own self-image, not on the presence or absence of marriage. Find something other than your sexual orientation to make yourself worthwhile, and I doubt it will be a problem.
No you NDT are nothing but a spoiled, rich, selfish elite. Like I said go have cocktails with your buddies and complain about all us ghetto gays. You think you are so much better, but you are nothing but a rotten liar…you care more about your pocketbook than you do about having the right to marry someone you love. Go wallow in your self hate and tell yourself that you are better than us liberal gays, if you can still believe it after all your buddies just declared you a 2nd class citizen.
#23: “Go wallow in your self hate and tell yourself that you are better than us liberal gays, if you can still believe it after all your buddies just declared you a 2nd class citizen.”
Dave, your problem with NDT isn’t that he’s wallowing in self-hate. Your problem with NDT is that unlike you, he doesn’t hate himself ENOUGH.
Perhaps if jack—-s like you, NDT, stopped perpetuating that vile lie, then fewer people would believe it, too.
But I think we all know how unlikely that is.
Again and again, you malign every last one of your opponents with the broad brush of “[whorish, sleeping around, will screw anything that walks] gay liberal [whore]”. Don’t you ever tire of living in a world [constructed in your mind] where you are such a paragon of virtue and all that is sweet and good and everyone else is just a base (not to mention EVIL) sex machine?
And don’t even get me started on your explaining to people what they really think, despite any protestation to the contrary which they may make.
