How do you know when you’re linked on a left-wing blog?

You discover an increased number of hate comments in your spam queue.

Sometimes some voices on the left make it so easy to confirm my theories about their mean-spiritedness, narrow-mindedness, misunderstanding of conservatism and even of the words, “rights” and “freedom.”

Thanks, guys.  :-)

Oh, and one last point, anyone who would use a doctored photo and put it forward as authentic is obviously someone who is easily duped.

Why is it that some of them can only make their points by insulting those they seek to criticize?  Is it their own inability to engage those with whom they disagree, their own failure to understand arguments which differ from their own? Or is it something deeper?  Some inner unhappiness?  Unmet psychological need?

I fear for the future if these are the type of the people the president-elect taps for his Administration.  But, so far at least, that doesn’t seem to be the case.  We must be thankful for small favors.

I fully understand your meaning, but these are precisely the people that ACORN targeted to make Obama the president-elect. The public face of Obama is one of reason and thoughtfulness. The private face of Obama is Chicago machine politics, Bill Ayres, The Reverend Wright, ACORN, Saul Alinsky and the ends justify the means.

Obama’s administration will be no Camelot round table of equals. Obama’s administration has been charged with making him a success. They are not to be colleagues, apostles or even sycophants. They are to be the generals who make the leader’s ideas into reality. Just today, Obama said that his government is tasked with carrying out his vision. If the socialist state is the vision, the Constitution will accommodate it. Economic socialism can be sold fairly easily to those who favor social liberalism.

Au contraire, mon frere. We neither insult nor criticize. We mock. We mock because your arguments are easily mocked. You are a sham of a mockery of a travesty of a sham.

    Good day, sir.

    I said GOOD DAY!

  4. I experienced left-wing hatefulness and intolerance myself last night. I was calmly and politely explaining why I voted Republican, when suddenly I got called a sociopath who should be water-boarded. I responded, “That’s not very nice. I’ve tried to be respectful to you, even though we disagree.” He said he calls it like he sees it. From what I’ve heard from other conservatives, this sort of exchange is all too common.

  5. Hey, commie, are my ideas easily mocked? Do you even understand what they are?

Hardly, the post referenced was as incoherent as it was juvnile and mean-spirited. But, at least it put a smile on my face, knowing that I must be doing something right to get them to devote so much space to trying to take me down.

Still, curious why you guys need get so personal in your posts and can’t limit yourselves to addressing our ideas?

  6. This type of “why are liberals so mean/uncivil/insulting” type post is pretty common these days in the conservative blogosphere. Allow me to clear this up for everyone. It’s not some type of congenital cruelty or lack of manners unique to the left. It’s that the left hates your guts for what you and your stupid party have done to America.

Conservatives are like the dumb whimpering dog that’s just been spanked with a newspaper for befouling the carpet for the hundredth time and can’t figure out why its owner is being so mean.

  7. Thanks, Adam, for helping make my point. :-) Still doesn’t answer my question though.

  8. No, it did. In the words of Mark Rippetoe, “Never ask a question that you may not be prepared to have answered.”

  9. “the left hates your guts for what you and your stupid party have done to America”

Essentially adam is saying, “Democrats: proud to be the party of hate.”

  10. So, to sum up, when one of you spittle-flecked diaper-wearing rage-addicted right-wing conservitards spew your ill-considered hate-filled bile across the intertubes, you call that vomit “reasoned discourse.”

    Okey-dokey.

    Comment by AlanSmithee — November 28, 2008 @ 10:53 am - November 28, 2008

  11. Nope. Unless you’re being willfully obtuse, this is an easy thing to understand. The left is very, very, very angry with what the right has done to this country over the last eight years. Things like the Iraq War, the deficit, Katrina, Gitmo, the war on facts and science, etc., may be affecting otherwise courteous folks’ ability to be polite or respectful to you.

Differing opinions is fine and all, but when one party has bankrupted your country–economically, militarily, and morally–it’s hard to keep being nice to those responsible. Bear in mind that you are not owed respect or civility by anyone. Frankly, imo, the GOP is owed a good measure of disrespect until they take responsibility for the colossal mess they’ve made.

[Um, Adam, the anger on the left goes back well into the early days of the Bush Administration, long beore the economy showed any signs of weakness. Not just that, we haven't had conservative economic policies these last eight years so, at best, you can blame them on elected conservatives for failing to push their party's agenda hard enough.

Well, at least you show us who some of you guys really are, that you don't want civility and refuse to respect your adversaries. So, basically each comment you make further confirms my point while fails to answer my query--why are you guys so angry? Why must you guys resort to personal insults? Guess for you the political really is personal. -Dan]

  12. The left is very, very, very angry with what the right has done to this country over the last eight years. Things like the Iraq War, the deficit, Katrina, Gitmo, the war on facts and science,

And yet, Obama is not pulling out of Iraq immediately and will keep troops there for the three years the Iraqi Parliament has agreed to. (Also, we *won* that war, and liberals are bitter that we didn’t lose, which seems unpatriotic to me.)

Deficit spending? Let’s see, not only are the Democrats now saying “Deficits don’t matter” as they push through another stimulus package and propose massive corporate welfare (a.k.a. bailouts) for selected crony industries, but Obama in the campaign promised programs that would result in (minimum) $795 Billion in new federal spending while only proposing $270 Billion in new taxes to pay for it.

Katrina — the failure of a Democrat mayor and a Democrat governor. The Republican state of Mississippi was hit harder and recovered faster.

Gitmo — Last I heard, the New York Times was advising Obama to keep it open. (i.e. they admit Bush was right.)

The war on facts and science — This from the party that declares debate on ‘Global Warming’ to be over, and actively seeks to silence all dissent. This from the party that insists on using taxpayer dollars to support embryonic stem cell research for purely ideological (a.k.a pro-abortion) reasons. (Because adult stem cell research is much more promising and not morally ambiguous.) Obama even wanted to eliminate NASA to fund daycare.

Adam has just proven the old nostrum that when you point a finger at someone else, you point three fingers back at yourself.

  13. Dan–I believe I have answered your question twice, if the question is “Why is the left so mean?” Whether or not you like or accept the answer is of course up to you.

One point–true, the Bush admin’s economic policies haven’t been true to conservative principles, but they’ve certainly been true to republican principles. Or at least republican principles since, say, DD Eisenhower.

V the K–I started writing a well thought out response and then realized that it would be a monumental waste of time arguing with you, so I’ll go with my first instinct, which is el oh el.

    Comment by adam — November 28, 2008 @ 9:33 pm - November 28, 2008

  14. Adam, well, maybe you did answer the question, but it seems more an excuse than a response. I mean, do the mistakes you attribute to Republicans account for the personal nature of the attacks?

Seems the very tone of your excuse, er, explanation, suggests you’re projecting something into the political sphere.

  15. –I started writing a well thought out response and then realized that it would be a monumental waste of time arguing with you

Yes, it would be a waste of time attempting to refute facts and solid reasoning. I give you credit for acknowledging that.

    Comment by V the K — November 29, 2008 @ 12:40 am - November 29, 2008

  16. “do the mistakes you attribute to Republicans account for the personal nature of the attacks?”

Yes, of course. Really big mistakes usually incur really big retaliations/reactions/responses.

Isn’t this incredibly elementary stuff? I mean, you may think the last 8 years went swimmingly, but most non-republicans pretty much feel like it was the worst presidential administration ever and that the country has slid right into the toilet on the GOP’s watch. People are angry. People are often not nice when they’re angry.

I might also point out that all this “gosh, liberals are so darn angry and uncivil” stuff is pretty hilariously rich coming from the party of Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, O’Reilly, et al.

    Comment by adam — November 29, 2008 @ 1:08 am - November 29, 2008

  17. Actually, Adam’s post is just a rationalization for the irrational hatred that he and his fellow bigot liberals feel towards conservatives. Their claims that the country has slid right into the toilet are laughable when you consider that which they support and endorse among their party members; basically put, their definition of “toilet” has nothing to do with behavior or ethics, but simple party affiliation.

  18. I think that generalizing and accusatory comments like the ones in this post might be a reason that people seem to be angry and on the defense. You might see yourself as someone who doesn’t come across as rude and biased but you come across on your blog as arrogant and extremely condescending. Yeah, to have a blog with some heated discussions will continue to get you ratings…but to poke the ashes of the Dem vs Rep fire is just sort of petty and doesn’t really do much except create a bigger wedge between the members in each party.

  19. Hadn’t read the comments before I made my last comment. Holy hilarity! You sound like a bunch of tarts who are so self righteous and pure. The epitomy of politeness…like everyone other Republican. HA! Right! For every big mouthed lefty there are an equal number of big mouthed righties. The only difference is that a big mouthed lefty will say it to your face.

  20. For every big mouthed lefty there are an equal number of big mouthed righties. The only difference is that a big mouthed lefty will say it to your face.

So you excuse your own impoliteness and rudeness based on your imaginary perception that everyone else is?

Why not just admit, Jay, that leftists like you spew hatred and arrogance, instead of trying to rationalize it by blaming “righties”? Isn’t your behavior justified by itself — or do you need the “everyone else is doing it” excuse?

    Comment by North Dallas Thirty — November 30, 2008 @ 11:21 pm - November 30, 2008

  21. I have to agree, liberals in general cannot have an adult discussion. BTW, adults can tell the difference between using exaggeration and humor to make a point (eg. Limbaugh) and using anger and hatred to avoid losing an argument (eg. liberals).
