Ouch. I was about to consider reading Paglia based on your admiration of her (sort of like how we’ve both come to appreciate Hillary), but then she wrote:

“… of all the innumerable print and broadcast journalists who have interviewed me in the U.S. and abroad since I arrived on the scene nearly 20 years ago, Katie Couric was definitively the stupidest.”

She’s entitled to her opinion, but in an article claiming Palin wasn’t given a fair shake that comment (and others like it) comes across as hypocritical.

I’ve never undestood the hatred of Couric anyway. I don’t watch CBS due to their blatant, decades-long, liberal bias, but any time I’ve seen Couric she’s no worse than any other talking head on network TV. Personally, since she’s not worse than any of the others, I think it boils down to misogyny.

I think Paglia is foolishly naive in some ways, but interesting and mentally alive. I hadn’t known that at least she sees through frauds like AGW and the Fairness Doctrine. My opinion of her has gone up after reading the Paglia link posted by GPW.

the irony of her article is that in defending palin against couric, paglia arguably engages in the same sort of “amoral overkill” and “defame[s] a self-made woman of concrete achievement in the public realm.” basically, she just calls couric stupid and shrill; isnt that the kind of unfair treatment conservatives say palin received from the media?

Sure, I appreciate Paglia’s mind and sense of humor, but it’s hard to agree so readily by getting in the mud with her — especially when the target is such an easy one. Couric is pathetic and I’m sure her stock has risen rapidly not because she ambushed Palin but because Palin performed uncharacteristically badly, a single performance that for so many has incorrectly defined the reputations of both women.

Paglia is best when she’s analytical, not when she’s reactionary. A very conservative trait.

I have always enjoyed Paglia’s missives as being a perfect example of an astute gender feminist…now I have more appreciation for her insight into the plastic world of journalism today.

BTW – she also makes a great case AGAINST the so-called Fairness Doctrine in her column, and she also excoriates liberal talk radio for its ineptitude. Sort of like some of the commentators we get on the board here nowadays.
