Barack Obama, My President

Filed under: Loyal Gay Opposition, Patriotism

As Barack Obama takes the oath of office as the President of the United States, he becomes my president.  I did not vote him and would rather another man were taking office today, but a majority of my fellow citizens and the electors from the various states voted otherwise.

Unlike some who helped elect the president, I don’t feel proud of my country merely when my candidate wins election to the highest office in the land.  By the same token, I don’t love my country any less because the man I opposed won that very office.  Indeed, I love it more that a man whose race would have earned him opprobrium in many parts of this country the year he was born could become our chief executive.

As former Vice President Cheney put it:

I have the same feeling that I think many Americans have, that it’s really remarkable that — what we’re going to . . .  swear in the first African American president of the United States. When I came to town in 1968, we’d had the Martin Luther King assassination, Bobby Kennedy assassination, riots in the cities, major, major disturbances, a lot of it racially motivated around the country.

And in fact, things have changed so dramatically that we’re now about to swear in Barack Obama as president of the United States. That’s really a remarkable story and I think a record of tremendous success and progress for the United States.

Obama’s election is a sign of the greatness of this country, that we can correct our faults as a nation, helping forge a more perfect union.

While we herald his achievement and honor the office he now holds, we will criticize, when appropriate, his policies.  We will not be like those who spent the last eight years (or significant portions thereof) in a constant state of animosity to the President of the United States.  Claiming he is not our president, as many did in the preceding eight years, would mean denying our American citizenship.

Barack Obama is now our president.  That doesn’t mean he should be immune from our criticism.  No President should

Ever since this blog was launched, we found ourselves more often than not defending the president, particularly when he was unfairly attacked.  Now, we have a new role, that of the loyal gay opposition.

  1. As my President I just wish Barack hadn’t stumbled and bumbled his way thru the oath of office. Please please give him a teleprompter from now on. We can do better.

  5. While I agree the President should be composed enough to expect the unexpected, it should be noted that the Chief Justice did add a word or two to the oath, throwing Obama off a bit.

  6. It was *Roberts* who messed up. Obama waited for Roberts to repeat the correct wording, as I saw it. Please, people… you’re grasping at straws, don’t you think?

  7. correction to my comment: Roberts didn’t add a word, he just mixed up the order of the words. Yes, as Andrea notes, that’s why Obama stopped and looked at him.

  8. Fox News is reporting Obama may not be officially President until he takes the oath and says the words properly. I’m surprised Obama didn’t know the words and have them memorized. It’s not a very good way to start. Justice Roberts should have slowed down and helped him out somewhat. Barack was obviously nervous. And needed the helping hand.

GPW, I believe that this statement is true for you and most other conservatives. It has already been proven incorrect for many, if not most, who comment regularly on here. I’ve looked around at other blogs further to the right than you and it’s scary what I see. Perhaps there were some as extreme on the left during the Bush years and I just never saw it but there seems to be no limit to what these folks are willing to claim and do in their opposition to Obama.

GPW, your words give me hope for change in this country :) just kidding, but I do appreciate your tone and your understanding of civilized dissent.

  10. I learned a lot the past 8 years. I watched the MSM very carefully. I watched MSNBC until I was about to puke. Funny how when the left is in control, everyone must rollover, all about peace and love. Well I wrote down some of the lefts creed. Speak truth to power. Dissent is patriotic. Unbridled power leads to corruption. I took good notes. I plan to be just as fair as the left has been the past 8 years. Grow up. If you can’t handle it, quit.

  11. GPW: I would expect “my President” to protect life, liberty and property. I would expect “my President” not to loot me (or others). Obama, so far, looks like a looter. He’ll be “my President” if he earns it by serving the cause of human life, liberty and property. Otherwise, he won’t.

  13. Very good post! He is our President now and even though people
didn’t extend this theory to Bush…we should respect the office
if not the man. Saying that, I’m still going to try to find something
else on TV when he interrupts prime time television…the man
does like his press conferences. Kidding aside, Obama has a
long, hard four years ahead of him…and it’s not going to be
very pleasant as he deals with the economy and our relations
with others. A lot is hanging on his head…we will judge all
future African American politicians by what he does, and if
all the hype is wrong and he fails…it could set us back decades.
If he succeeds, who knows…he might actually make it possible
for “the dream” to come true that would allow anyone to grow
up and be President…maybe even a woman.

  34. Today I am not proud of my country. Today the most unqualified person on the planet became our president at a time when experience and competence is the only thing that will save our country. Today we put into office a socialist at heart that will surely turn the country in that direction. The fact that a person who has 50% black blood running through his veins became president is unimportant. If we had elected a black person of substance and accomplishment, then that would have been historic. However we got the first American Idol president that also happened to be black. I don’t care about the tint of his skin and that seems to be the most important element to the mainstream American. Black skin will not save this country from the economic mess that we are in. How sad I am and ashamed I am of my country today. Rather than uphold the ideals of what it mean to be an American, we have sold out for the latest packaged and marketed politican. I would just as soon have Brittany Spears as president. Neither has any real talent and both have been created by a PR machine.

I LOVE it!!! Patriot Goddess, suppose they’re right. Let’s take them at their word, for a moment. And put 2 and 2 together.

    - ‘patriotism’… It means, devotion to the nation. Another word for it is ‘nationalism’.
    - ‘progressive’… When spoken by left-liberals, it means Left ideals. In other words: socialism.

Who can guess where this is going? :-) OK, I’ll just say it. “Progressive patriotism” is, conceptually, one and the same as… NATIONAL SOCIALISM.

  38. (To be clear: I don’t love it that Obama’s devoted, creepy, hippie-left supporters have that philosophy. But I love it that their terminology reveals the truth about their blighted, collectivist souls: their lust to control all, making everyone and everything just like them.)

    Comment by ILoveCapitalism — January 20, 2009 @ 7:17 pm - January 20, 2009

  39. Well, I do know that Chief Justice Roberts bumbled the oath, which is why Obama stopped and looked at CJ Roberts, who then corrected himself. Beyond that I am beginning to strongly believe that Nobama is a one speech wonder and that occurred in 2004 at the DNC Convention, where he used glossy prose and catchy one liners.

What scared me about Nobama’s speech is that I felt I was in the middle of a Marxist speech and certainly not an American President’s Inaugural speech…Nobama summoned us to return to our Founding Documents…but then spoke in Marxist speech of the “collective we” and “government to fix our problems, etc”

His words numbed me into major we are screwed….and dare I say the leftist Marxist brown shirts…and Nobama’s movement is definitely that, leaves me to believe that “Dorothy, we aren’t in the United States any more” and the Wizard of Nobama is really going to sink what is left (definite pun intended) of freedom and capitalism.

I might add that W and his miserable excuse of a Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson, began us down this road and handed the keys over to the Marxist in Chief and left Dodge for the rest of us to fend for ourselves.

I do believe that the Bushes were a class act during the transition period and today.

I do have many issues with Bush but I do know he left us without another attack on our country since 9/11 and that with what he done with such things as AIDS, aid to Africa and his soft core of use of military and Peace Corps like activities in Africa will be a great legacy to him.

Plus, the surge in Iraq turned the tide and I leave the rest to history. My issues with Bush were he was a GOP LBJ and screwed up the economy and instead of spending less and paying for programs he proposed (Medicaid prescription drug program) and expansion of military without paying for that either (and it was needed after the mess Billy Clinton left the military) and run away spending and most spending since LBJ leaves me to believe that he was not a Reagan/Goldwater Republican but an LBJ Republican….

Nobama is our President. I said a prayer for him and his family and for our country. However, we as citizens must speak out and speak power to truth as Hillary Rodham Clinton stated.

I am scared that the Congressional GOP will roll over and play dead and they have so far with the likes of tax cheater Tim Geitner and so far with the TARP and we shall see with the future over spending.

The cure for all of this to reform the mortgage industry to go back to regulations for FNMA and Freddie Mac (when they had regulations based upon common sense) and tell banks to unfreeze credit, if we have to remove the troubled assets from their books, but tell them they must lend to small businesses, homeowners that need to refinance their loans (but no hand outs so if you are foreclosed due it in a staggered manner so as to not screw up the real estate market worse then it is), and let the free market be unleashed and go back to common sense regulations of Wall Street.

How about instead of bail outs, we let capitalism do its job and it does it well and cut tax rates for all of us and for businesses, eliminate capital gains, encourage small business loans, cut spending, etc…

if we spend federal dollars, how about rebuild the energy grids, highways, schools, encourage off shore drilling, drilling everywhere we can, and the all of the above approach of nuclear energy, wind, solar, clean coal, natural gas and so on

What I see coming is pork, pork and more pork and government screwing up our daily lives…..where is Ronald Reagan when we need him….government needs to get out of the way and Nobama will keep bankrupting us so that we will be the newest Marxist country…while China is becoming the newest capitalist country.

so much for going back to the foundations of our Founding Fathers and Founding Documents and unleashing freedom.

No ceremony nor oath is required, it just automatically happens. And, as others have pointed out, President Obama clearly memorized the correct words and Roberts was reading the oath wrong, thank you very much.

30: Well, duh. It’s issues like this that soared Bush’s un-approval rating of 75%. This is one reason people voted for Obama, to hopefully reverse the lingering problems that numbskull couldn’t take care of while he was president.

  54. Friends, I am here and so glad to be so. I am straight and have always been in favor of gay rights. Other than that I am pretty conservative. I used to be quite ridiculously leftist and over time time the transformation happened, maybe because growing up tends to expose one to reality and the fact that much of the leftist idealism is rather sappy or when taken to the extreme, deadly. I love blogs like this which put an end to the stupid stereotypes, especially so many bitchy liberals come on here and condescend and make asses of themselves. O yea, Obama. I think he is a very charismatic guy and a great speaker even though I disagree with him on practically everything. My problem is with the calvacade of sycophants who are constanty kissing his ass and the maudlin Hallmark card aura that surrounds the phenomenon. I grow tired of heroic whites who swoon and weep and feel they will win a Nobel for reading some Maya Angelou and voting for Obama. Anyways, I think I should end this post by urging all my friends on here to work on rebuilding the right into a force to be reckoned with in the coming years. That means small government Goldwater style conservatism, not moving towards the left just to appease. When people see a genuine right instead of a big government “let’s spend a ton of cash” right, the strength will be back in our hands. Remember, Obama only won by 7 million even though he drastically Outspent McCain – Palin by quit a bit. It was not a landslide and plenty of people sat out this election feeling that McCain did not support a lot of principles which they do. Post was quite long, but we are in very frightening times. I worry about truth squads and endless ass kissing and private citizens being torn apart by the media scum. We will fight and we will win, but we must start NOW!!!

  56. Not the best dress, but not horrible. It was a very colonial yellow which gave it the look of upholstery, not sure what was going on under the jacket, but in some pictures something like a yellow life preserver appeared to be peeking out. Certainly nowhere near as bad as the black widow dress she wore on election night.

  57. AE, here’s the link you need http://www.gaypatriot.net, stick mostly to the comments though the article titled 1/20/13 is a good example also. Hopefully a few will learn that opposition and criticism should be based on something more that pure hatred for the man and for those who voted him in.

You do the victim whine quite well, perhaps you could get a job at HRC. What happened, real and imagined, in the last 8 years is no excuse for y’all to do the same exact ugly, disgusting thing. But you have and you will.

  61. LOL…I love all the comments about Michelle’s outfits. Seems that you people are in the minority (again!) as fashionistas all over are gushing over her looks.

Oh, it’s going to be a LONG, LONG decade for conservatives. Face it, George W. Bush buried the GOP and it will take a long time before it has a chance to be a majority party/WH winner again.

Finally, it’s absolutely pathetic that Chris Wallace and other right-wing regressives are suggesting that since CJ Roberts blew the oath that Obama is somehow not the president. Grasping at those straws, eh?

And we have adDave, cornered, once again trying to argue that he didn’t say what he clearly said. Sort of like how the Obama campaign is already trying to spin their insistence that paying taxes is patriotic into a defense of their nomination of a tax cheat for head of the department that oversees the IRS and their support of a tax cheat for head of the committee that writes tax legislation.

Poor Michelle needs a team of we Gays to work on her style…well, shall I say make sure she has style…

The Inaugural Ball gown didn’t fit it, had a Bjork Oscar dress look of feathers, what looked like old chinelle bed spread look with cotton balls ala the 1950s and early 1960s and kept bunching up on her backside…not a good luck…

Style, grace, elegance, subtle…someone call the Fashion Police and arrest that woman….and call in the Fashion Ambulance and Fashion Paramedics to rescue her…from the Convention messes of dresses to the ink blot Election Eve dress..the First Lady needs major help…stat!

  71. To recap:

    1. ADD makes the statement “It has already been proven incorrect for many, if not most, who comment regularly on here. I’ve looked around at other blogs further to the right than you and it’s scary what I see.”

    2. A&E challenges ADD to provide examples to back up his allegations.

    3. ADD posts the URL to the GayPatriot blog and says, (paraphrasing) “Find your own examples.”

    4. A&E replies a.) so this blog is your example and b.) you haven’t really cited any specific examples of what you have alleged.

    5. ADD denies that he cited the gay patriot blog as an example. Still does not cite any specific examples of people saying BO isn’t their president or of the “scary” things he claims to have found in blogs “further to the right.”

OK, so maybe ADD isn’t completely full of crap, but he sure is acting like he is.

    Comment by V the K — January 21, 2009 @ 6:12 pm - January 21, 2009

  72. Oh, and I forgot, instead of providing examples to back-up his allegations, he reverts to childish name-calling: “giggly little pseudo-conservatives with the inability to understand a complete sentence.”

    Comment by V the K — January 21, 2009 @ 6:13 pm - January 21, 2009

  73. BTW: ADD, maybe someday you can own up and be a man. Don’t say things you can’t back up. Don’t try and weasel out when you get caught in a lie. Man up and admit it when you’re wrong. If you could just manage those three things, you’d reduce the time you spend looking like an ass by about 90%.

But fun as it is, (and it is FUN), I really think he’d do himself a favor if he just grew up, quit the bullsh-t, and acted like a man. Are you serious? You can defend wearing gold upholstery with green garden gloves? I may wear the latest fashion off the rack at Wal-Mart, but I wouldn’t let anybody wear that to the Player Hater’s Ball, let alone Inauguration Day.

  81. Gentlemen and ladies, thank you all for making my day. First-time reader here, straight married gal, found this great site while browsing for intelligent conservative life in these terrible times. Lots of smart people, good for you guys. I shared your comments with my Mom, we both noticed the green garden gloves, what was up with that? As for Barack Hussein and the oath, yes indeed all he had to do was repeat what the chief justice said to him, but that would mean listening to someone else talking, and BHO hasn’t listened to anyone but himself for a long time now.

    Thanks again guys!

  85. The first lady has really bad taste in clothes. That is unfortunate as she is quite lovely. That green frock is hideous, my grandmother has a sofa with that material…. Back to business, Obama is not ready for prime time and I predict more flubs… he really does not have the experience to lead this nation forward. I think we have less than a year before another major attack. I don’t think our president is ready for this. My home town has been mentioned as a repository for those currently housed at club Gitmo. Do you think it is likely that we could be attacked if we agree to take the trash in?
