Opponents of Prop 8 Outspent Supporters

February 3, 2009 by GayPatriotWest

Not quite sure what to make of this, but it goes to show that money alone does not a good campaign make.  Just read that opponents of Proposition 8 outspent supporters of the ballot measure by over $3.5 million dollars:

More than $83 million was donated to support or oppose the ballot initiative that abolished same-sex marriage in California, according to campaign filings released Monday.

The new filings cover the weeks immediately before and after the Nov. 4 election. They show that elected officials, businesses, churches and individuals poured more than $28 million into the campaigns during the contest’s closing days.

The final tallies show that opponents of Proposition 8 raised $43.3 million in 2008 and had a little more than $730,000 left on hand at year’s end. The measure’s sponsors raised $39.9 million and had $983,000 left over.

Of course those totals don’t include the “value” of the efforts by volunteers on both sides of the initiative.

Conservatism wins when conservatism is defined. Prop 8 won despite being outspent because the lines were clearly drawn. McCain and Republicans lost, on the other hand, because, um, what the hell is it they stood for again?

You can raise all the money you want, but if you misuse it – then it really doesn’t matter if you outspend your rivals.

Demanding ‘equality’ and demonizing the other side is not a winning campaign when dealing with serious social issues.

Meanwhile, Obama is taking his time with DADT, he is asking for a study by the military, but of course isn’t in any hurry to get that one on his table.

I contend that repealing DADT will produce ‘equality’ much faster – since it won’t be eggheads lecturing people from above. It will be actual men and women serving their country openly that will change a lot of people’s minds.

After the spending totals for the natl elections are in and the totals for the Obama Coronation are in, wasting $83m in CA on a culture war issue seems like loose change. Shame on the gay activists who brought these defeats upon all gays –and it was their antagonistic activism that brought it to the ballot box. I remember hearing from some of those who led the battle against Prop 8 that it was going to be slam-dunk because, afterall, CA is the home of the gay civil rights movement and the soul of the GayNation. Ummm, yeah, ok.

Well, we sort of overplayed that hand nicely, eh? Care to start working on real issues like redressing the federal tax inequities in SS partnerships, survior benefits or gay adoption rights? Of course, Dan, the people who need to hear that point are not readers of this blog.

I’m with Leah on this one. If the process is clean, and not a simple imposition from outside the military and not one that has a further social engineering agenda, I’d be much more interested in changing DADT.

#3: Or they might just be the trolls.

Do I need to mention what happened when I received a call from HRC begging for money they haven’t earned?

Attmay, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall listening to you and the HRC.

    Regards,
    Peter H.
