God Bless Texas, Peter. I sure do miss it.

And you can add Virginia (my home state and current residence) to the list of the pathetic. Woe is me, says Virginia, all thanks to our (shamefully I will admit it) Democratic rule. They tax everything and still want more. If Tim Kaine had his way he'd tax the oxygen we breathe. His idea for saving Virginia was to sacrifice imported beer in his mansion and opt only for domestic. Genius. And low and behold my beautiful state rolled over and voted for Obama. Surprised was I? Not in the least. Ashamed and shocked, but not surprised, what with all of the entitled welfare babies suckling at the teet of Obama. I say if those three states can manage then the others should suck it up and get over it. Instead it's a pissing contest to see who deserves the most from the stimulus. I wonder if the "stimulus" bill as a write in for Kaine's imported beer.

I'm sure it's pure coincidence that the three states not desperate for pork-package moola are governed by Republicans. Yup, coincidence.

Lee: EVERY state has trouble maintaining and improving infrastructure. It's not a matter of principles, it's a matter of the enormous expense. I'd wager a guess that your state is better off in this area than most others.

I don't know about Indiana and Mississippi, but the reason Nebraska doesn't need a "bailout" is the simple fact that its know-nothing governor and conservative-dominated Legislature don't want to address the infrastructure needs of the state and its counties and cities, including a highway building program running years behind.

The current governor, from the day he took over, has tried to tackle 21st Century problems with 19th Century thinking.

Will the Governors of the fiscally responsible states...MS, IN, NE and I think there are others....deserve criticism for not being in deficiet? After all if they were spending like the others on crap programs, they would be getting a federal windfall right about now. There are reasons why our government is so disfunctional, they are rewarded for their missteps and failures. There is no pain and punishment for poor government. With the feds bailing out poorly run state governments, the people in those states are less likely to vote out the moronic local officials. This isn't hard to figure out.

Add Texas to the list...not only with a Republican governor (reelected with a plurality in 2006) but also with a balanced-budget amendment in our state's constitution.

Regards,
Peter H.

As I've said earlier, Omaha is the Meg Griffin of cities. Nobody likes it and it doesn't like itself. Yet, it must be doing something right. Perhaps it's the influence of Warren Buffett. Or the lack of a vibrant, diverse gay community marching in the streets on behalf of issues which have nothing to do with having a homosexual orientation. I think it is the solid base of common-sense German Lutherans and the church as a center of the community. The mix of hard-working, intelligent farmers and solid faith leads to a working economy.
