Will Democrats’ Extravagence Lead to their Collapse?

As I was reading the epilogue to Joseph J. Ellis’s Passionate Sage: The Character and Legacy of John Adams, I chanced on something that great man said in 1812 (in a letter to Benjamin Rush) which could well apply to the Democrats’ spendthrift “stimulus” and its impact on American politics.

“When a party grows Strong and feels its power, it becomes intoxicated, grows presumptuous and extravagant and breaks to pieces.”

The more people know about the “stimulus,” the more they will see the Democrats for what they are, using this “crisis” as an excuse to enact their agenda, expanding the size and scope federal government even when there is no popular support for their statist endeavors.

Of course that expression could be used to describe Republicans in 2005.  And look what happened the following year.

  1. What’s funny is that it took Republicans over a decade to lose power based on abuse of power, and the Democrats seem to be going a lot quicker than them.

  2. It is because the Democrats are the party of big government. It took the Republicans a few years to try the Democrat approach to governing. It did not and it does not work. The reason Republicans ever get elected is because of the promise of reform. And some do govern that way. But, when they get caught up in unbrideled power, they lose their reforming ways. Since the Democrats alway promise, one way or the other, more government, it is never any reform. Just kind rearanging those deck chairs on the Titanic.

  3. John Adams counted on a free and fair fifth estate to keep the polititians honest. As you know there is little of that in 2009. If not for the rise of the bloggisphere a lot of govt corruption and shenanigans would be unknown to the general public or “ordinary folks ” as the President likes to call us. The MSM just parrots the talking points of their fave groups. The Dems line that so and so is too valuable to let tax cheating disqualify him from serving. Quite the croc huh? I’ve believed for a long time that 30% of Americans don’t pay close enough attention, so are passive. Another 30% would let the Democrats do almost anything short of setting up gulags. The other 40% pay close attention, stay educated and want clean open responsible conservative government. And that 40% want as little govt as possible and want to be left alone. But it’s not 51%. To win elections you gotta get some of the morons or liberals to stay home or are so embarrassed and vote against ineptitude….Carter or Kerry.

  5. Will Democrats’ Extravagence Lead to their Collapse?

I hope so too. But with a clueless populace, and a water-carrying media, I fear it will lead to the collapse of the US first.

  6. If he won’t go through the porkulus “line by line” and eliminate pork, why should we believe he’ll do the same with the budget? To be fair, though, he said that he would eliminate the pork. Problem is the liberals told him to go to hell and he obliged.

    Some leader there.

  7. Agreed that the US will suffer long before the Democratic Party. Their supporters are darning socks with the wool that’s been pulled over their eyes and they couldn’t be happier. The herd will follow Pelosi, Reid, and Obama right over the cliff while chanting “change”.

Obama may have had good intentions, but they were never going to come to fruition. Pelosi has his balls in a vice-grip. Unfortunately, have the American public (guess which half) is too ignorant to understand our government to know that it wasn’t Bush screwing us over it was Pelosi and Reid. So ignorant in fact that they voted for Obama anyway. Hopefully they get what’s coming to them. Unfortunately we have to suffer for their ignorance as well.

  8. Correction: *half* the American people. Apologies to any democrats reading, you probably couldn’t figure out that was a typo.

  11. Another Country Where Obamunism Has Failed: Venezuela. Chavez financed his “Stimulus” with billions in oil revenue, and still failed. Now, his economy is in freefall.

Government spending does not lead to prosperity, except for a few Chicago-style insiders and owners of companies that get a direct cut. If lavishing Federal spending on an economy worked, West Virginia would be the wealthiest state in the union.

The trick is defining “pork.” Democrats have never seen a spending bill they didn’t like, have they?

On another blog it was mentioned that “free broadband for everyone” was cut out of the pork package and the commenters went ballistic, “OMFG the f’n Republicans are f’n ruining our f’n lives those f’n f’ers.”

Now how do you justify broadband for everyone as a requirment for an economic recovery package? By that standard there’s no such thing as pork whatsoever; Anything is allowed, everything is required.

I agree with a previous blog post that this whole thing should be available for public review (in clear language).

Well beginning with the Big O, apparently not. He can’t even read his own notes from his campaign. We all no Reid is a nincompoop, and the Botulinum toxin has certainly done its deed with Pelosi.

So the short answer: you’re right, I’m wrong, the answer is no.

  14. Peter: P.S. Since first reading this blog last week I find myself wishing I had you and a few others following me around providing witty commentary 24/7. Oh what fun that would be! (Especially considering the disproportionate amount of libtards around me.)

  15. Thanks, Vanessa! I have long known that the best defense against liberals is to just laugh at them. They are the saddest, most dispirited people on the face of the earth.

That being said, stick around – my material gets better during the 6 pm show. Make sure you tip your waiters. 😉

  16. Peter:

You’re welcome! And I have to tell you that I’ve become a bit addicted to this blog. It’s beginning to cut into my productivity, and I LOVE it. And I figure hey, I can always quit my job, start making babies, and live off the governments dime. It seems like the cool thing to do these days. That way, I can sit at home ALL DAY LONG and read Gay Patriot and COLLECT! WOOOOHOOO. Now I’ve got it all figured out.
