This is awesome. While the Left is fawning over the change of policy regarding the UN Declaration (good move, Obama — truly), some promininent gay Republicans are noting the vicious irony.
From a press release yesterday: [GP Ed. Note: This press release did NOT come from Log Cabin Republicans– the “official” gay Republican organization. Rather it is a statement from two former LCR staffers.]
“It smacks of tokenism to sign a U.N. resolution on the treatment of gays and lesbians, while opening the door to closer relations with the brutally anti-gay regime in Iran,†said Jimmy LaSalvia, a Republican activist and former Policy Director for Log Cabin Republicans. “While the Obama administration should be applauded for signing this resolution, the resolution is meaningless if they pursue a foreign policy that appeases tyrants like Ahmadinejad.â€
According to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, the crime of homosexuality is punishable by death in Iran. “If the Obama administration is serious about stopping the persecution of gays and lesbians across the globe, then they will make it clear that they will not deal with states like Iran where the penalty for being gay is death,†said Christopher Barron, the President of CapSouth Consulting and the former Political Director for Log Cabin Republicans. “If the U.S. is going to be a leader in defending human rights, it’s going to take much more than a toothless U.N. resolution.â€
Now here are my two cents:
Obama also wants to engage with the Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah…. shall I go on?
It is important that the US join the world bodies in such action. But it is MORE IMPORTANT that gays are not left hanging (pun intended) as Obama begins his campaign of appeasing the Islamists around the world.

It’s stunning that LCR, being Gill-funded and so pro-Democrat, would want to criticize Obama on something.
This is NOT coming from Log Cabin Republicans. But FORMER LCR staff who are organizing themselves to comment on national issues.
More on this group in the future……
Can’t wait 🙂
What? There’s a vaccum in the marketplace of ideas and a group is being created to fill it?
How… Free Market of them 😛
Mr. LaSalvia and Mr. Barron speak what I believe is the truth. UN Resolutions have proven to be meaningless time and time again. It seems a great effort has been made to distinguish these two men apart from Log Cabin which is wise since Log Cabin has not sounded pro-republican in a very long time. Log Cabin has proven to be highly ineffective on a national level for sometime. I hope that during these next two years the GOP will embrace those of us who support our party, who support republican values, and just also happen to be gay.
Our isolation of Iran has worked about as well as it has in Cuba. Which is to say, not at all.
Our isolation of Iran has worked about as well as it has in Cuba. Which is to say, not at all.
Obama should be “applauded” for signing a “meaningless” resolution? What?
What “appeasing” are you referring to?
And since they have raised the issue of gay persecution in Iran, it’s fair to ask — since they think the Obama approach isn’t the right way to go — what do they recommend? I don’t see how ignoring Iran and treating it like a pariah is going to help gays there.
So what’s the answer?
…in the sense that it is rendered void and inoperative, as liberals constantly go out of their way to betray/violate it. (addendum to Erik #5)
P.S. Same as was true of the sanctions on Saddam Hussein, that supposedly “worked” and “had him in his box” (but so totally didn’t).
And that’s after he’s embarrassed the Irish PM, thumbed his nose at Gordon Brown, pissed off Mexico, the Vatican etc.
If this gay UN thingy is non-binding, what’s the point?
So, will theses Republicans condemn Bush for being buddy-buddy with the gay-lashing Saudi regime?
I bet they do. I do.
TGC, I think the point is throwing a few gilded crumbs to gullible gays around the world so the world will ‘like us’ even more. Like everything the amatuer in chief does, it’s all pomp and circumstance and no substance.
The UN is such a complete waste of money and valuable NYC real estate, it just amazes me that we still belongto that cesspool of corruption. There’s yet another story on Fox News about UN shenanigans. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,509819,00.html
#6 – If you think that Cuba is better off today than when the embargo started in 1961, then you are more ignorant than I thought.

Yo! Iran does not have gays and stuff like that. I heard Imanutjob say so to the liberals at Columbia. Where’s the hypocrisy? Just another GayPatriot derangement syndrome.
AJB said, “So, will theses Republicans condemn Bush for being buddy-buddy with the gay-lashing Saudi regime?”
Look, it’s Rush Limbaugh- get him! Nice diversion attempt- God forbid you not suck up to every move Obama makes. Just because you must agree with everything Democrats do, don’t make the mistake that conservatives are that narrow.
Bush blew it many times- he was hardly conservative. Rather than screaming in the streets for his head or putting crass bumper stickers on my car, I dealt with it constructively- writing Bush and my representatives. However, since Bush isn’t POTUS any longer, it’s hardly relevant.
Since you’re so concerned about human rights, I’m sure you’ve condemned Obama and SOS Clinton for her comment to the Chinese that human rights are less important than begging for their money right now.
riiiiight. because by merely opening diplomatic relationships with a country, we emphatically endorse all of their policies. which is why we, as a country, also supported the russian invasion of georgia, human rights abuses in china, and every anti-american rant that comes out of hugo chavez’s mouth.

Thats news to Castro. He has been wailing for decades about how horrible the embargo has been to Cuba. If its so ineffectual and they get anything they want (but obviously don’t have the money for) then why lift the embargo?
“P.S. Same as was true of the sanctions on Saddam Hussein, that supposedly “worked†and “had him in his box†(but so totally didn’t).

So you are saying S. Hussein and the leftist were lying when they were claiming the horrible embargo was resulting in 500,000 child deaths in Iraq? And the same assholes claim ‘Bush lied! people died!’

Another brilliant observation. Since we have relations with some scum therefore we must have relations with all scum. Gee and we need relationship with a country that is actively supporting terrorist all over the world and arms the scum in Iraq. Right.
I came back to read these postings and really am surprised that anyone thinks talking with Iran will have any positive result. The UN is a graft based organziation that has had no credibility for decades. Cuba is much worse off due to the embargo and I know because I have been there, yes I know but its possible. But sanctions through the UN are impossible. Iran is a nation that supports terrorist organizations through supplies and weapons which they obtain from China and Russia. Iran wants Israel wiped off the map. So, for me as a conservative I believe we should accept the reality for now is that we can do nothing until the leadership of Iran becomes more moderate and more in sync with the civilized world that will not tolerate terrorist or those that support them. Obama was merely trying to make points with the few that were listening. He doesn’t care and the American people don’t care because the mainstream media doesn’t address these types of human rights violations. Government sanctioned murder of gay people is not newsworthy I guess, but Anna Nicole’s former doctors are. That speaks volumes of this nation and how much it has changed in the last 20 years.
Nuke all middle eastern “nations” except Israel.

Please provide us with the pertinent facts, Chad, otherwise STFU.
Also – I guess you heard that Iran has basically given “the finger” to The Snob’s overtures, huh? So much for “everyone in the world starting to like us again.”
You libtards are such tools. No wonder you are all such wussies.

#21: And soon we’ll have fascists like boob claiming communism is “right-wing”. Which would make him right wing. Gasp!
